Sabah tourism generates over 380,000 jobs
Hajiji said tourism accounted for about 15 per cent of Sabah's gross domestic product (GDP) last year, underscoring its growing role in socio-economic development.
'But statistics alone do not tell the full story. Behind every number are lives and families empowered through tourism,' he said in a speech delivered by Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew at the launch of the ASEAN Travel Exchange (ATEX 2025) here today.
Hajiji noted that many tourism ventures in rural Sabah are led by local families who offer authentic cultural and nature-based experiences. In 2024, the sector contributed RM7 million in state revenue from 18 active districts.
'The state is conducting more grassroots initiatives in rural areas to widen these benefits,' he said.
He reaffirmed the state government's commitment to the tourism sector through infrastructure upgrades, including improvements to Kota Kinabalu International Airport, rural road access and digital platforms to better promote and manage visitor experiences.
'Our strategy for a resilient, future-ready tourism economy includes embracing green principles, accelerating digitalisation and strengthening Sabah's profile as a host for international tourism events.
Hajiji said hosting ATEX 2025 marks a major milestone for Sabah, positioning it not just as a destination but as a strategic partner in shaping ASEAN's tourism future.
'We welcome industry leaders across the region to Sabah, to strengthen partnerships, spark new opportunities and move forward together,' he said.

Meanwhile, Anwar also held a meeting with Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Opening. Seven projects to deliver more efficient, stable power to Sabah, Labuan
KOTA KINABALU: Over 60,000 consumers in Sabah and Labuan will benefit from a more stable and efficient power supply with the implementation of seven energy projects valued at RM260.7million. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also energy transition and water transformation minister, said the projects under his ministry involve substation upgrades, new grid line connections, and safety monitoring systems. "(These are) designed to ensure reliable electricity supply across areas from Tanjung Aru to Ranau, Batu Sapi, and Labuan," he said during the handover ceremony for the seven completed energy sector projects at the Kota Kinabalu Main Intake Substation (PMU KKBU) here. The PMU KKBU project, initiated under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP), now benefits around 11,452 users in Tanjung Aru and Kota Kinabalu city. It includes a building housing 132kV and 33kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and 132/33/11kV transformers, replacing the outdated 66/11kV system with no replacement parts available. The project also supports a new 33kV cable connection to Kota Kinabalu International Airport, thus improving supply reliability to this strategic location. Other completed projects include the 132kV Labuan–Sipitang Interconnection which was completed on Sept 2 last year, but awaiting the completion of Sarawak Energy's portion by September 2025. "Once operational, it will enable the import of 30MW of power from Sarawak, with a grid capacity of up to 500MW, making it part of the Asean Power Grid linking Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak, and the Philippines," said Fadillah. Another one is the RM31.3 million 33/11kV Ranau Main Distribution Substation (PPU) that was completed March last year and connects Ranau to the Sabah grid and reduces dependency on an 18MW diesel power plant, benefiting 15,620 users while cutting diesel subsidies. Others are the RM30.02 million Batu Sapi PPU to address old system issues; RM42 million Protection Online Monitoring System with the installation of 15 km submarine fibre optic cables from Kampung Lambidan, Menumbok to Tanjung Aru and Labuan. The RM50.011 million PMU at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) which has been operational since Aug 12 last year, raised load capacity from 93.51MW to 131.60MW, lowered SAIDI index, and reinforced 33kV distribution in Sulaman and Alamesra, benefiting over 5,000 users including UMS Hospital. The RM6.3 million 11kV System Enhancement in Labuan, which was also completed in Nov last year, upgraded protection systems at PPU Rancha-Rancha, boosting infrastructure to support new developments in Labuan.

GRS Supreme Council meeting to decide whether to go solo

CHIEF Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said his ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition will decide at its Supreme Council meeting whether to go solo in the coming state election. When pressed after officiating the inaugural Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) convention at the Hongkod Koisaan Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association, Saturday, on when this decision would be made, he said: 'Wait lah.' Supporters from both PBS and Star chanted 'solo, solo, solo' as Hajiji was giving his speech at the convention. He said the calls were a very good sign for unity within GRS and that the local spirit is very high. On whether he would serve out his full term with just four months left before the state election must be held, he said: 'Do not ask me that. We will think about it. 'We in GRS, any decision must be made through the coalition's Supreme Council. 'When I want to dissolve, I will inform all my colleagues, the party presidents when to dissolve. It is done on consensus, even though it is the Chief Minister's prerogative to advise the Head of State, but we cannot sideline our friends in the coalition,' he said. Earlier at the convention, Hajiji pointed out Sabah's notable economic recovery since GRS took power in September 2020, when the State faced 'the worst economic situation in its history'. 'With careful planning and implementation of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ 1.0) policy direction, we not only succeeded in restoring it but also boosted the State's economic performance to a very impressive level,' he said. He pointed out Sabah's Gross Domestic Product, which grew to RM84.3 billion in 2024 from RM83.2 billion in 2023. Additionally, the State revenue collection for 2022, 2023 and 2024 nearly reached RM7 billion, compared to just RM3.59 billion in 2020. On top of that, the Sabah Government's reserves now stand at RM8.6 billion, while domestic and foreign investments brought into Sabah since 2021 total RM35.38 billion. 'All of this is a healthy economic indicator and proof of the capability and excellence of the State Government led by GRS. No one can deny it. Only the opposition chooses to close their eyes and deny these facts,' Hajiji said. He said Sabah can turn into a more advanced, prosperous, peaceful and harmonious State if GRS continues receiving the people's mandate. 'We will ensure all development plans that have been outlined can be fully implemented from the city to the interior. 'The Sabah Maju Jaya policy is not just a document but a long-term strategic plan covering human resource development, natural resource management and administrative efficiency.' He acknowledged that despite economic success, the GRS continues to face ongoing challenges from opposition parties envious of the coalition's achievements. 'They will not stop. They are jealous of our success. They want to see us fail, be weak and fall,' he said, describing opposition tactics as including false propaganda, deception and slander. 'Our house, we protect. GRS is our house, our place of shelter and the organising of our struggle. If we do not take care of it, who else can we count on?' he said. At the PBS-Star convention, Hajiji said it is a historic moment in strengthening local political consensus, with the close cooperation between the two local parties showing political maturity that puts Sabah's interests above ideological differences.
