
When walls speak: The stories behind Penang's iconic murals
When Zacharevic created Children on a Bicycle behind an old shoplot in Lebuh Armenian in 2012 as part of the George Town Festival back then, it marked the start of a street art explosion — one that turned the city's alleyways and bare walls into vibrant storytelling canvases, where contemporary expression meets local heritage.
Today, these murals draw throngs of visitors and offer locals a renewed connection to their history.
Yet, the transformation wasn't without resistance. In the beginning, many locals viewed the murals with suspicion and hesitation.
"At first, many locals, including my neighbours, didn't like it," recalls Chew, a 65-year-old who runs a souvenir stall at Chew Jetty, adding that: "It became noisy and crowded. Strangers were standing outside our homes and taking photos. It was a big change."
For a city just listed as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation World Heritage Site in 2008, the sudden arrival of street art would definitely raise eyebrows.
Heritage purists feared that vibrant murals would overshadow the architectural soul of George Town, Penang's state capital where colonial facades stand shoulder to shoulder with kopitiams and clan houses.
The city, named after King George III (1738-1820) of the United Kingdom, was founded in 1786 by Captain Francis Light, who established it as a trading post for the British East India Company.
"Some feared that contemporary expressions could dilute the city's authenticity," remembers Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, continuing: "There were worries the murals might overshadow George Town's deeper historical significance."
Trevor Sibert, honorary treasurer of the Penang Heritage Trust (PHT), said the early resistance to street art was understandable.
"Every artwork should have meaning — a rationale that resonates with its location," he says, adding: "Not everything painted represents the true essence of George Town. Deep research must go into it. This isn't about censorship — it's about context."
TOURIST MAGNET
Yet, despite early scepticism, attitudes began to shift.
The once-controversial murals gradually emerged as one of the state's most powerful tourist draws and enduring cultural symbols.
Today, from bustling Lebuh Armenian to quieter back lanes in the city, there are more than 57 officially recognised murals — along with countless unofficial works — adorning the city's walls. Visitors can trace street art trails, snap photos and uncover local stories rendered in bold brushstrokes.
Children on a Bicycle, the most popular artwork, captures two youngsters in joyous motion: a laughing girl pedalling a real rusted bicycle fixed against a weathered wall, her younger brother clinging to her waist, wide-eyed with delight.
Not far away in Lebuh Ah Quee stands Boy on a Bike, a lanky teenager leaning against a motorbike, his half-smile hinting at adolescent swagger.
And in Lebuh Muntri, Little Girl in Blue stretches her arms across two window shutters, a haunting yet hopeful image of innocence reaching out through time and weathered wood.
Both murals, which blend playful, photorealistic figures with real-life objects, were also painted by Zacharevic, who made Penang his home base while travelling around the world for exhibitions and installations.
"I came for the food the first time," confides Hanna Fuzesi, a 25-year-old Canadian tourist. She continues enthusiastically: "But when I returned, it was for the murals. It's like walking through an outdoor gallery."
Her Australian travel companion, Amy Lansall, agrees, saying: "Some murals are hidden — like little treasures. They're not all over the place and this is what makes the experience personal."
The economic ripple effects are undeniable. Souvenir shops, cafes, trishaw riders and licensed tour guides have all integrated street art into their offerings. Mural maps, guided walks and themed souvenirs are now part of the travel experience.
Malaysian Association of Hotels (Penang chapter) chairman Tony Goh says hotels within the heritage zone are also using the murals to attract guests.
"Tourists enjoy it. The feedback is overwhelmingly positive," he shares, adding: "Street art has become part of Penang's identity. It's not just about pictures — it reflects the character of this city."
HERITAGE BALANCE
Still, authorities are mindful of the risks of "mural fatigue".
"There's always a risk that too much of a good thing can lose its meaning," says State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai. "These murals aren't just decorations. They tell stories — of trades, childhood, community and culture. That's what makes them special. Each piece should relate to our Outstanding Universal Value (OUV)."
To maintain that heritage balance, the state mandates mural proposals to go through the Integrated Local Council Solution (ILCS), reviewed by a public art review panel that includes George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI), the state agency responsible for managing, safeguarding and conserving the city's World Heritage Status.
"We want stronger storytelling and curation," says Wong, adding: "Otherwise, the murals become wallpaper."
Zacharevic, the man who started it all, remains modest about his role.
"Penang's street art is much bigger than me," he says, continuing: "There are so many artists — local and international — contributing to the scene. It's a collective effort."
His latest venture, a gallery space in George Town called Cultprint, is where he now explores new directions. He is currently preparing an exhibition on intellectual property rights — highlighting how artists should be protected in the age of viral content.
"Creativity should benefit not just the tourist economy, but the local art community, too," he says.
OF PAST AND PRESENT
For Penangites like Tan Hor Teong, a 45-year-old hawker operating near the heritage zone, the murals have become part of his daily life.
"At first, the older generation didn't understand. They wondered why were people so interested in wall paintings?" he recalls, adding: "But now we see how it brings business, how it shares our culture in a way that connects."
Even international visitors are impressed by the city's creative pulse. "In China, street art is too controlled," shares Deng Xiaobu, a 48-year-old tourist from Guangzhou.
"Here, it feels alive. It's not just art — it's an experience."
As Penang continues to position itself as both a creative capital and the "Silicon Valley of Asia" with its ever-growing number of high-tech companies based there, its murals remind the world that heritage can be both preserved and reimagined.
"In the end, Penang's greatest masterpiece may not be on a wall. It may be the delicate, ongoing dance between past and present, painted with care, and watched over by those who love this island best," says Sibert of the Penang Heritage Trust.
And Lithuanian Zacharevic agrees, as he reflects: "I never set out to make something iconic. I just wanted to create something meaningful — and a little bit magical.
"The fact that people still connect with it today means we did something right."

Tourist coins pose giant problem at N. Ireland's famous causeway site
BUSHMILLS (United Kingdom), July 14 — Northern Ireland's Giant Causeway draws close to one million visitors a year but their habit of wedging tiny coins in cracks between the rocks—to bring love or luck—is damaging the world-famous wonder. Now authorities are urging tourists to keep their coins in their pockets to preserve the spectacular landscape. Some 40,000 columns mark the causeway, Northern Ireland's first Unescp World Heritage Site. Geologists say the natural phenomenon was created by an outpouring of basalt lava 60 million years ago. Legend has it that the causeway was formed by Irish giant Finn McCool. In recent decades, visitors have pushed thousands of coins into fissures in the rocks. The gesture is 'a token of love or luck', according to Cliff Henry, the causeway's nature engagement officer. But the coins rapidly corrode and expand, causing the basalt to flake and leaving 'unsightly' rust-coloured streaks, Henry told AFP. He pointed to streaks on a rock and gingerly prised out a US cent with a set of keys. 'We get a lot of euros and dollar cents. But coins from literally all over the world—any currency you can think of, pretty much—we have had it here,' he said. A report by the British Geological Survey in 2021 revealed that the coins were 'doing some serious damage' and something had to be done about it, he noted. Signs are now in place around the site appealing to tourists to 'leave no trace'. 'Distressed' 'Once some visitors see other people have done it, they feel that they need to add to it,' causeway tour guide Joan Kennedy told AFP. She and her colleagues now gently but firmly tell tourists to desist. At the exit from the causeway, a US couple said they were 'distressed' to hear of the damage the metal caused. 'Our guide mentioned as we came up that people had been putting coins into the stones. It's really terrible to hear that,' said Robert Lewis, a 75-year-old from Florida. 'It's kind of like damaging any kind of nature when you are doing something like that, putting something foreign into nature. It's not good,' said his wife, Geri, 70. As part of a £30,000 (RM172,409) conservation project, stone masons recently removed as many coins as they could—without causing further damage—from 10 test sites around the causeway. Henry said the trial was successful and is to be expanded across the causeway. 'If we can get all those coins removed to start with that will help the situation and hopefully no more coins will be put in,' he said. 'If visitors see fewer coins in the stones and hear appeals to stop the damaging practice, the problem can maybe be solved. 'We know that visitors love and cherish the Giant's Causeway,and many form deep personal connections to it, so we want this natural wonder to remain special for future generations.' — AFP

Vietnam Complex of Monuments and Landscapes recognised as world cultural heritage
HANOI: Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son-Kiep Bac Complex of Monuments and Landscapes was recognised as a world cultural heritage at the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) on July 12. The complex has become Vietnam's ninth world heritage site and second trans-provincial heritage site, following Ha Long Bay-Cat Ba Archipelago, which spans the northern province of Quang Ninh Province and Hai Phong City. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu, Chair of the Vietnam National Unesco Committee, said the recognition was not only a source of pride for the authorities and people of Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, and Bac Ninh, but also a collective joy for Vietnam. This acknowledgment affirms the international appreciation of the value of the Complex of Monuments and the humanitarian ideals of the Truc Lam Zen Buddhism founded by Emperor Tran Nhan Tong (1258–1308), as well as Vietnam's efforts in heritage preservation. The Unesco recognition enhances the country's international standing and facilitates the sustainable preservation and promotion of heritage values. It also strengthens regional connections between Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, and Bac Ninh, creating a cohesive heritage space that contributes to promoting the image of Vietnam and its people. This is another contribution from Vietnam towards the goals of preserving and promoting heritage values advocated by Unesco. Such honour and pride come with responsibilities, requiring all levels, sectors, and localities to enhance awareness and implement synchronised, practical measures to effectively preserve and promote the heritage in line with the spirit of the World Heritage Convention and sustainable development, he noted. Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Dr Hoang Dao Cưong, emphasised that recognition was resulted from years of dedicated efforts by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the provinces. This has involved implementing numerous projects for the preservation and restoration of heritage sites, as well as researching and identifying values to prepare nomination files for domestic and international recognition. The Deputy Minister announced at the session that Vietnam would continue to implement activities to protect and promote world heritage values in a sustainable manner. This commitment is reflected in the recent passage of the 2024 Cultural Heritage Law by the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on November 23, 2024. According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Thi Thu Hien, Director of the Cultural Heritage Department and Permanent Member of the National Cultural Heritage Council, who leads the Vietnamese expert team participating in the World Heritage Committee, the inclusion of the Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son-Kiep Bac Complex Complex in Unesco's World Heritage List is the result of closely following and implementing the directives of the Party and State leadership. This achievement reflects the high level of effort and determination from the localities of Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, and Bac Ninh, particularly the leading role of the Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee throughout the research process that began in 2013. "This achievement demonstrates the collective strength and the close, effective coordination between localities and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism – the coordinating agency that helps the government implement unified state management of cultural heritage and fulfill the responsibilities and commitments of member states participating in Unesco's conventions on cultural heritage. 'It also reflects the contributions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Cultural Heritage Council, and the experts involved in Vietnam's World Heritage Committee,' she stressed. In particular, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent a letter to the Director-General of Unesco and the 20 member countries of the World Heritage Committee, requesting support for the nomination of the Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son-Kiep Bac Complex. This highlighted Vietnam's strong commitment to managing and protecting its heritage, which was highly appreciated by the members. Based on this, the session achieved unanimous agreement, with all members supporting the inclusion of the Vietnamese nomination in the World Heritage List. Nguyen Thi Hanh, Vice Chairwoman of the Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee said the Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son-Kiep Bac nomination file was meticulously and systematically developed by the province. "We will continue to develop and implement a project for the preservation, restoration, and promotion of heritage values to ensure sustainability and broadly disseminate the esteemed values of the world heritage site,' she added. The Complex includes 12 locations with a core area of 525.75 hectares and a buffer zone of 4,380.19 hectares. With Truc Lam Buddhism as its core, it was established in the 13th century by the Tran Dynasty's kings. The Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son-Kiep Bac Complex, recognised by Unesco as a World Cultural Heritage site, exemplifies the unique combination of the state, religion and the people in shaping the Vietnamese national identity. It features a sacred landscape formed through a close and continuous interaction with nature, along with an ethical system rooted in a love for peace, self-cultivation, tolerance, compassion and harmony between humanity and nature. Before this, Vietnam had eight world heritage sites recognised by Unesco, including the Complex of Hue Monuments (1993), Ha Long Bay (1994, expanded to include Cat Ba in 2023), Hoi An Ancient Town (1999), My Son Sanctuary (1999), Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park (2003, expanded in 2015), Thang Long Imperial Citadel (2010), Ho Citadel and Trang An Landscape Complex (2014). - Vietnam News/ANN
