NIA Gets Court Nod To Collect Voice, Handwriting Samples Of 26/11 Accused Tahawwur Rana
Special NIA Judge Chander Jit Singh sanctioned the agency's plea on Wednesday, a major breakthrough in the continuing probe into the fatal 26/11 attacks that killed more than 170 people.
Earlier this week, the court had also extended Rana's custody with the NIA by another 12 days to allow for further questioning. At the hearing, the NIA informed the court that Rana had been presented with a "voluminous" amount of records and evidence related to the attacks but was being obstructive while being questioned. The agency contended that custodial interrogation was necessary to elicit important information regarding his supposed role.
Senior Advocate Dayan Krishnan and Special Public Prosecutor Narender Mann argued on behalf of the NIA, while Rana was represented by Advocate Piyush Sachdeva, who was assigned through legal services. Rana's counsel argued against extending remand, deeming further custodial interrogation to be unnecessary.
Rana, a Canadian of Pakistani origin and aged 64, has been charged with assisting the principal conspirators in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack by Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba. His extradition from the US last month has been regarded as a significant step in India's quest to put all the conspirators behind bars.
The NIA keeps investigating Rana's suspected associations with individuals engaged in planning and executing the attacks, which included targeting various points in Mumbai such as hotels, a railway station, and a Jewish center.

Sebi fines Prabhudas Lilladher ₹11 lakh for violating market norms
Capital markets regulator Sebi has levied a fine of ₹11 lakh on Prabhudas Lilladher after finding the financial services firm in violation of several regulatory provisions, including misuse of client funds and incorrect margin reporting. The order came after the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) along with the exchanges NSE, BSE and MCX carried out a comprehensive joint inspection of Prabhudas Lilladher Pvt Ltd. The inspection period was from April 1, 2021, to October 31, 2022. One of the major findings was the alleged misuse of client funds on three occasions, where the net available balance (G) was negative, peaking at a shortfall of ₹1.89 crore, thereby violating breach of market norms, the regulator said in the order on Wednesday. Further, violations included incorrect reporting of peak ledger balance in cash & cash equivalent, client registration process, and analysis of weekly enhanced supervision data, as per the order. Additionally, Sebi also found that the broker (Prabhudas Lilladher) had transferred securities worth ₹1.30 crore of 91 credit balance clients to "client unpaid securities accounts" and overstated its net worth by ₹31 lakh. Accordingly, the markets watchdog concluded that the violations were established and imposed a penalty of ₹11 lakh for violating Stock Brokers rules, Securities Contracts (Regulation) Act, and Sebi circulars. In a separate order passed on Wednesday, the regulator slapped a fine of ₹5 lakh on Mumbai-based Nuvama Wealth and Investment for violations of various regulatory provisions, including incorrect reporting of client funds, and lapses in cybersecurity compliance. The order came after Sebi carried out joint inspection of Nuvama Wealth and Investment Ltd, along with exchanges (NSE, BSE, MCX and NCDEX) and depositories (CDSL and NSDL). The period covered under the inspection was from April 1, 2022, to November 30, 2023.

Solving Crime: When 2 papaya trees and a muezzin's call helped Thane police solve a 2016 kidnapping case
In July 2016, Khalid Qadri, a 49-year-old land dealer in Mumbra in Maharashtra's Thane district, got a call from his friend, asking him to travel to Bihar for a property deal. As soon as Khalid reached Bihar, though, his wife, Shama Qadri, got a ransom call, saying he had been kidnapped. Though Khalid returned safely after the ransom was paid, it was three clues that led the Thane police to arrest the accused: two papaya trees, the voice of a muezzin, and the mobile network of a Nepal service provider. According to the Thane police, Qadri's friend Noor Alam called him to Bihar on July 30, 2016, on the pretext of a land deal and then kidnapped him, along with his accomplices. Alam then allegedly made an extortion call to Shama, seeking ransom. In Mumbra, a worried Shama approached the police, following which a kidnapping case was registered. To ensure Khalid's safety, Shama paid Rs 30 lakh, after which he was allowed to return to Mumbra on August 5, 2016. Back home, Qadri met Thane Crime Branch officials, who asked if he remembered anything about where he was held captive. According to a police officer, Qadri told them that the room he was in was situated near a mosque, as he could hear a muezzin's call for prayers five times a day. He had also seen two papaya trees at a distance, he said. The other clue that the police had was that the accused had used a Nepal-based mobile service provider to make ransom calls. This had confused the investigating officials as the calls had been traced to Bihar. When a police team reached the area from where the ransom call was made, however, they found that it had access to the mobile network of a Nepal-based service provider as well. The police thus narrowed down their search to a few villages in the vicinity. Khalid had told the police that he would be able to identify the muezzin's voice if he heard it again. The police team then started visiting the villages in the area at different prayer times. After visiting a couple of mosques, Khalid identified a voice as the one he had heard when in captivity. 'Near the mosque, we found two papaya trees. We then tracked the room where he had been detained,' an officer recalled. The police found that the room was owned by one of the accused, who resided nearby. The police then laid a trap and arrested the main accused, Noor Alam, 30, and his alleged aides, Saifiullah Khan, 45, and Irfan Khan, 22. The police also recovered the ransom money that had been paid.

CM Naidu calls day ‘unforgettable' after releasing Krishna river water to Rayalaseema
Nandikotkur , Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday said that supplying water to the drought-prone Rayalaseema region gives him immense happiness, calling the day "unforgettable" after releasing Krishna river water into the Handri Neeva Sujala canal. CM Naidu calls day 'unforgettable' after releasing Krishna river water to Rayalaseema "Today is an auspicious day in the history of Rayalaseema and marks a new step in enabling the flow of water. The happiness of providing water to Rayalaseema is unforgettable," said Naidu, addressing a village meeting at Malyala. Stating that he was born in Rayalaseema and understands the region's hardships, Naidu said many believed the area would turn into an arid stretch of rocks. However, he noted that he had invested hundreds of crores of rupees to prevent desertification. Although widening the Handri Neeva canals, which span over 554 km, was once considered impossible, Naidu said the state has earmarked ₹3,890 crore for the expansion work. Water has been released under phase I, and the second phase will be completed in 15 days to irrigate even the most distant lands in Rayalaseema, he added. Naidu assured that water will be supplied to Krishnagiri, Jeedipalli, and other project areas. He said nearly two lakh acres would be irrigated under the first phase and another six lakh acres under phase II of the HNSS project. According to the Chief Minister, the TDP government had spent ₹12,000 crore on projects in Rayalaseema, while the previous YSRCP government "did not spend even ₹2,000 crore in five years". "It is easy to make statements but very difficult to translate them into work," Naidu said, adding that while the TDP completed projects, the YSRCP "destroyed" them. He reiterated that the government would disburse the Annadata Sukhibhava scheme— ₹20,000 annual financial aid for farmers—as soon as the Centre releases its share of funds. The amount will be distributed in three phases, he said. Naidu also reaffirmed his commitment to providing free bus travel for women starting August 15. On the same day, 700 government services will be made available through the WhatsApp-based governance platform 'Mana Mitra', he added. The Chief Minister also referred to recent deliberations between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on water-sharing, held in New Delhi on Wednesday. He stressed the need to avoid disputes and instead adopt a 'give and take' approach between the two Telugu states. Naidu emphasised that harnessing excess Godavari water, which currently drains into the sea, could help both states irrigate vast stretches of arid land. Following the water release, Naidu offered prayers and garments to the Handri Neeva waters in Nandyal district, as per an official statement. The water release marks a major milestone in the completion of the ₹696 crore Handri Neeva phase-I canal works. The widening of the canal is expected to enhance its carrying capacity to 3,850 cusecs.
