UN CEDAW Committee Breaks New Ground With First Treaty Body Review Of Afghanistan Since Taliban Takeover In 2021
GENEVA (26 June 2025) - At a time when Afghan women warn that their very existence is being erased and their voices rendered invisible on the global stage, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) has taken an unprecedented step by reviewing Afghanistan's compliance with its international women's human rights obligations, without engagement from the existing de facto authorities in the country. As the de facto authorities of the Taliban, currently in control of large parts of the country, are not recognized by the United Nations, the Committee reviewed the fourth periodic report of Afghanistan submitted by the Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to the United Nations in Geneva and engaged in a dialogue with a delegation of former Afghan officials and women's rights leaders in exile. The Committee had also invited the de facto authorities to participate informally in the review, but no response was received. While UN treaty bodies have previously conducted country reviews in the absence of a state delegation, CEDAW's decision to hold a public dialogue with a delegation of former State officials, following the precedent of the fourth cycle Universal Periodic Review of Afghanistan in April 2024, represents a first-of-its-kind arrangement within the treaty body system. This review is not only a CEDAW obligation, but also 'a fervent hope that [the] exchange will prove constructive, anchored in mutual respect and steadfastly committed to strengthening accountability for the rights of Afghan women and girls,' said Bandana Rana, Committee member who led the country review. 'This Committee bears a solemn obligation, a legal, international and moral imperative to examine these developments with unflinching clarity and uncompromising resolve,' she added. In doing so, the Committee reaffirms that the Convention remains legally binding on Afghanistan regardless of shifts in political leadership or regime. 'Our concern transcends politics. It is rooted in principle. It stands upon the bedrock of universal and immutable values: human dignity, equality, non-discrimination, autonomy and justice for all, most urgently for the women and girls of Afghanistan,' said Rana, adding that, 'We harbour the profound hope that today's dialogue will serve not merely to deepen the accountability of all stakeholders but to galvanize a renewed and unified commitment, including of the international community to restore the inalienable human rights of Afghan women and girls, first and foremost their right to education.' Committee Chair Nahla Haidar emphasized that 'this review has set an important precedent for how treaty bodies can establish responsibility when those exercising effective control in a country fail to uphold that country's human rights obligations and their responsibility to protect their population. It was an unprecedented opportunity to recall the principle of accountability and solidarity enshrined in the United Nations Charter.' CEDAW remains committed to its mandate and stands with the women and girls of Afghanistan by calling on all stakeholders, including the international community, to uphold their obligations under international law. The Committee will publish its findings, formally known as Concluding Observations, on 7 July.

Nitish Rana set to return to Delhi after poor stint with Uttar Pradesh
New Delhi [India] June 26 (ANI): Nitish Rana is poised to return to his home state, Delhi, after spending two domestic seasons with Uttar Pradesh (UP). The experienced batter has obtained a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) and is expected to make the switch ahead of the upcoming domestic season, according to ESPNcricinfo. 'The experienced batter asked for an NOC and we have given it to him,' ESPNcricinfo was told by UPCA's chief executive officer Ankit Chatterjee 'He mentioned family reasons for his decision,' he said. Ashok Sharma, secretary of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), confirmed that Rana had communicated his decision to the board and has already secured the required clearance from UP. 'However, DDCA has not yet received a copy of his NOC. Only after receiving the NOC, we can say anything about the chances of him playing for Delhi,' Sharma said, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo. Rana had been a part of Delhi's age-group and senior domestic setup until 2022. He moved to UP in 2023, where he was entrusted with leadership responsibilities. However, his time with the team did not live up to expectations. A dip in form last season saw him being dropped from both the one-day and first-class sides. In the 2024-25 domestic season, Rana featured in four Ranji Trophy matches for UP, managing just 150 runs across six innings, including a lone half-century. His return in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20s were also modest 111 runs in nine games at an average of 13.87 and a strike rate of 114.43. He played only two matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy before being dropped due to continued inconsistency. As the Ranji Trophy resumed for its second phase in January, Rana was omitted from the squad. His struggles continued in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, where he represented Rajasthan Royals (RR). Before a calf injury ruled him out, he scored 217 runs in 11 innings, with two fifties but no consistent impact. Signs of a possible split with UP became clearer when he was not included in the auction list for this year's UP T20 League. In total, Rana played 10 first-class games for UP, scoring 447 runs with one century and two fifties. In seven List A matches, he managed just 72 runs, while his 16 T20 appearances yielded 314 runs, including two half-centuries. He also captained UP in six Ranji Trophy games and four Vijay Hazare Trophy fixtures during the 2023-24 season, guiding them to one and three wins respectively. Rana's anticipated return to Delhi could be intriguing, particularly in light of an on-field spat last season with current Delhi captain Ayush Badoni during a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match, which required umpire intervention. Moreover, the competition for middle-order spots in the Delhi squad remains intense. If the DDCA officially accepts his NOC, Rana could also feature in the Delhi Premier League (DPL), slated to be held in August. (ANI)

Why Was India Pacer Suddenly Released After 1st India vs England Test? Report Says: "He Was Not..."
Seam-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana has been released from India's squad ahead of the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series, for which the team has travelled to Birmingham. Sources have told IANS that Rana is now on his way back to India from Leeds itself. Rana was previously added to India's squad for the first Test in Leeds, which England won by five wickets by chasing 371 on a thrilling final day at Headingley. "Actually, one of the pacers in the main Test team had a niggle. If the team think-tank wished to have someone as a back-up bowler who could execute a bouncer-led strategy, it was Rana who fit the bill and thus was held back. "But as things stand, everything is fine now. As a result, Rana has now been released from the squad, and that's why he was not spotted with the team on their travel to Birmingham,' the sources further told IANS. Rana made his Test debut during last year's tour of Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, where he managed to pick just four wickets at an average of 50.75, with his best figures being 3-48 in Perth. In England, Rana got his chance to play in the first game for India 'A' against England Lions at Canterbury, where he returned with figures of 1-99 and scored 16 runs. Meanwhile, Wednesday was a travel day for the Shubman Gill -led Indian team. The players will have a day off on Thursday and are likely to begin their training sessions on Friday in preparation for the second Test starting on July 2 at Edgbaston. With England now 1-0 up in the five-match series, India have a task at their hands to bounce back, especially after suffering a stinging defeat in Leeds, despite having five centuries and a five-wicket haul in their kitty. India are in England for a five-match Test series, their first outing in the World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle.
