Xabi Alonso confirms talk with £70m Arsenal target Rodrgyo and where his head is
Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso insisted Rodrygo's focus remains on the Spanish giants despite rumours linking him with a move to Arsenal. The 24-year-old's future at the Santiago Bernabeu was thrust into uncertainty last season after falling down the pecking order under Carlo Ancelotti.
No longer a starter due to the attacking trio of Vinicius Junior, Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham, the Brazilian looked likely to move on from Madrid after six years at the club, having signed in 2019 at just 18 years of age.
It was the Gunners who emerged as the favourites to clinch his signature, given Mikel Arteta's aim to improve his attacking options ahead of the 2025/26 season.
But it is understood the Premier League side will have to fork out in excess of £70million to land the winger, who is also said to be of interest to Bayern Munich and Paris Saint Germain.
Speculation over Rodygo's future has only heated up during the FIFA Club World Cup where he's played a bit-part role in Madrid's run to the quarter-finals. After playing 65 minutes in Madrid's opening game against Al-Hilal, he's had just 23 minutes of action and was an unused substitute against Pachuca and Juventus.
Despite his lack of minutes, Alonso revealed in his pre-match press conference that his winger remains focused on making a positive impact should he see the pitch in their last-eight tie against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
"I'm sure Rodrygo can return to his best form," the Spaniard said. "I spoke with him; he's positive, eager, and ready when needed." This wasn't the first time Alonso insisted that Rodygo is still considered an important member of his squad, a sentiment he stated after Madrid's 1-0 win over Juventus this past week.
"After the game I try to approach everyone I meet along the way," he said. "He had a few minutes [against Salzburg] that were important for him and he will be important. In these championships, sometimes those who start are just as important as those who come in.
"They can have a decisive impact, so each player has to be prepared for whatever comes their way. Everyone is in a good disposition. Rodrygo is training well and I see him in good spirits. Then it's my decision who plays."
Following the end of the season, Arteta promised Arsenal fans that the summer break will prove to be an "exciting" one for fans who had to contend with a third straight second-place finish in the league.
"It's going to be a very exciting summer," he previously said to Sky Sports. "First of all, reviewing what we have done. Finding ways to increase the level of the team. Finding big margins where we can still develop our game model and our players.
"Then putting those plans together, playing the pre-season. And then if we don't have enough from that, then it's about what do we need to recruit now to make the difference."

The 22-year-old is back with the Eagles after a loan spell at Sheffield United last season. But they lost out in the play-off final to Sunderland and the England under-21 cap has returned to his parent club. Palace are looking for around £10million for Rak-Sakyi - but Rangers may look to loan him. Ibrox bosses could also attempt to get him on a permanent deal for a lower fee. Gers boss Russell Martin is looking for a winger to replace Vaclav Cerny after his loan ended. Rak-Sakyi came through the ranks at Chelsea before joining Palace in 2019. He had a productive loan spell at Charlton before shining for Sheffield United last season. But he's unlikely to feature for Palace in the Premier League and looks set to move on. Gers have already added Max Aarons, Lyall Cameron, Emmanuel Fernandez, Joe Rothwell and Thelo Aasgaard this summer. Wolves stopper Nasser Djiga is also in talks over a loan, while Leicester City defender Conor Coady is edging closer to an Ibrox move. New Rangers chiefs Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe's first interview But Martin still wants more - with several players set to depart before the end of the window. Lille are in talks over a megabucks deal for Hamza Igamane and AEK Athens want Cyriel Dessers. Fringe men like Rabbi Matondo, Kieran Dowell and Ben Davies could also be shipped out. Speaking on Friday, Martin said: 'We are working hard to make sure we get the right ones. 4 'The ones already in the building we are so pleased about and the ones we think will come in in the next week or two we'll be so pleased with them. 'We still need some help, but we are all aware of that. 'We can't be in a rush and just sign the ones we're not too sure about. 'We have to go after the ones we really want. We have to look at character first. 'Can you come here and add to us as a group in terms of your behaviour, the way you train, the way you work, who you are as a human being? 4 'Playing for this football club won't be for everyone so character first then talent after. 'We want to get both. 'We're at a disadvantage because we have these early European qualifiers. Kevin is calling guys who are still on the beach. 'We are waiting for things to happen so it's not a lack of willingness. Everyone is working so hard. 'The ones we have brought in so far, great. But there will be more.' Arsenal plot striker transfer breakthrough as crunch Gyokeres D-day beckons
Sporting CP are expecting Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres to report for pre-season training next week Arsenal believe next week could hold the key to their seemingly never-ending striker hunt. Portuguese champions Sporting CP are expecting wantaway striker Viktor Gyokeres to report for pre-season training but the Swede is threatening to go on strike in order to facilitate his dream switch to north London. Gyokeres and his agent Hasan Cetinkaya are currently at war with Sporting president Frederico Varandas, who has been accused of ripping up a gentleman's agreement that would enable the 27-year-old frontman to depart for £60million. However, Varandas has made it clear Sporting won't sell their star man for below what they consider to be fair market value. Arsenal have persistently flirted with moves for both Gyokeres and RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko this summer but if the ex-Coventry City hitman does not show up for training in Lisbon, there is optimism Sporting may crack and eventually, soften their stance. Gyokeres is planning to hold face-to-face talks with Varandas to resolve the situation upon return to Portugal. The crux of Sporting's international stars are due back on Monday but Gyokeres has now been given permission to return on Friday, the day before the Portuguese champions head to the Algarve for a training camp. Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta has been actively pushing for the Sweden international since arriving at the club while Mikel Arteta has been courting Sesko for the best part of 18 months. However, should Sporting slash their asking price - it would significantly strengthen Arsenal's hand to land either player. Even if the Gunners did not want to push the button on Gyokeres, there is a sense they could use Sporting's reduced demands as leverage in negotiations with Leipzig for Sesko, which is why they've been so determined to play the long game. Gyokeres has been stepping up his fitness this week alongside personal trainer Giannis Katsigiannis while on holiday in Mykonos. Meanwhile, Sesko has also been relaxing on the Greek island and remarkably, the two Arsenal striker targets have even shared the same mobile barber in the past 10 days. Arsenal sources deny they have made an offer for either player to date, though Berta has held initial dialogue with representatives of both clubs. Last month, the Italian chief is understood to have met with Sporting director Bernardo Palmeiro in Menorca where informal discussions took place and there have also been direct conversations with Leipzig's Marcel Schafer over Sesko. Arsenal appear to have a clear run at both forwards as Gyokeres has already intimated to Manchester United that he would favour a switch to the Emirates despite his respect for former boss Ruben Amorim. Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins, who was the subject of a rejected approach in January, and Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike are both also admired. While a centre-forward is considered a top priority, the Gunners are also striving to strengthen their wide and attacking midfield options with Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke all among the key names of growing interest. Personal terms are now in place with Madueke following several rounds of discussions with the Chelsea winger's camp and Arsenal are now expected to approach the Blues to formally discuss a potential transfer.
