Arsenal plot striker transfer breakthrough as crunch Gyokeres D-day beckons
Arsenal believe next week could hold the key to their seemingly never-ending striker hunt. Portuguese champions Sporting CP are expecting wantaway striker Viktor Gyokeres to report for pre-season training but the Swede is threatening to go on strike in order to facilitate his dream switch to north London.
Gyokeres and his agent Hasan Cetinkaya are currently at war with Sporting president Frederico Varandas, who has been accused of ripping up a gentleman's agreement that would enable the 27-year-old frontman to depart for £60million.
However, Varandas has made it clear Sporting won't sell their star man for below what they consider to be fair market value.
Arsenal have persistently flirted with moves for both Gyokeres and RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko this summer but if the ex-Coventry City hitman does not show up for training in Lisbon, there is optimism Sporting may crack and eventually, soften their stance.
Gyokeres is planning to hold face-to-face talks with Varandas to resolve the situation upon return to Portugal.
The crux of Sporting's international stars are due back on Monday but Gyokeres has now been given permission to return on Friday, the day before the Portuguese champions head to the Algarve for a training camp.
Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta has been actively pushing for the Sweden international since arriving at the club while Mikel Arteta has been courting Sesko for the best part of 18 months.
However, should Sporting slash their asking price - it would significantly strengthen Arsenal's hand to land either player.
Even if the Gunners did not want to push the button on Gyokeres, there is a sense they could use Sporting's reduced demands as leverage in negotiations with Leipzig for Sesko, which is why they've been so determined to play the long game.
Gyokeres has been stepping up his fitness this week alongside personal trainer Giannis Katsigiannis while on holiday in Mykonos.
Meanwhile, Sesko has also been relaxing on the Greek island and remarkably, the two Arsenal striker targets have even shared the same mobile barber in the past 10 days.
Arsenal sources deny they have made an offer for either player to date, though Berta has held initial dialogue with representatives of both clubs.
Last month, the Italian chief is understood to have met with Sporting director Bernardo Palmeiro in Menorca where informal discussions took place and there have also been direct conversations with Leipzig's Marcel Schafer over Sesko.
Arsenal appear to have a clear run at both forwards as Gyokeres has already intimated to Manchester United that he would favour a switch to the Emirates despite his respect for former boss Ruben Amorim.
Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins, who was the subject of a rejected approach in January, and Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike are both also admired.
While a centre-forward is considered a top priority, the Gunners are also striving to strengthen their wide and attacking midfield options with Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke all among the key names of growing interest.
Personal terms are now in place with Madueke following several rounds of discussions with the Chelsea winger's camp and Arsenal are now expected to approach the Blues to formally discuss a potential transfer.

Celtic told Isak Jansson transfer rules as Rapid Vienna reveal the bid that has already been rejected
The Swede is seen as a successor for Nicolas Kuhn with the winger set to join Como Celtic are keen on adding Rapid Vienna winger Isak Jansson this summer as a replacement for Nicolas Kuhn. The Scottish Premiership champions may have to spend big to bring the winger to Celtic Park after Rapid Vienna sports director Markus Katzer lifted the lid on bids that have already been turf out. Kuhn's exit is set to bank £17.2million for Celtic when he joins Como just 18 months after he left the Austrian Bundesliga side for Glasgow's east end - with Brendan Rodgers keen to see the money reinvested in the squad. The Hoops are looking to replicate the success of the £3million recruit by returning to Vienna with Jansson on the shopping list. The 23-year-old joined the club for £200,000 from Spanish Second Division side Cartagena last summer to full the gap left by Kuhn. And Katzer has revealed why they chose Jansson as a direct replacement for the German wide man - and interest that has already been turned down during his short time at the club. He said last month: "We needed a replacement for Nicolas Kuhn after he signed for Celtic. "We asked our manager what type of player he was looking for in particular and he told us he wanted someone who could beat a man, one-on-one. "We did a wide data search across our target markets and in terms of dribbling and taking on players, Jansson appeared in the top three. "We looked at a lot of his videos and he was exactly what we wanted. "Usually, we would watch a player live, but with the timescale and the closing of the transfer window, we had no time and had to trust the data. "The risk was relatively low because we also know that in eight to nine out of ten cases, the impressions from video scouting are confirmed during live scouting. "And with Jansson, it wasn't a risk at all because we first agreed on a free loan first and then a small transfer fee of £200,000. "One week after we exercised the purchase option in the season, we had an offer of more than £1 million on the table. "He will clearly be transferred for many times what we paid for him. He has been an amazing success for us." Wimbledon star has the last laugh after being booed during post-match speech
No.10 seed Ben Shelton overcame Martin Fucsovics in straight sets at Wimbledon on Saturday evening before issuing a plea to the Court One crowd which prompted boos Ben Shelton will have his lucky charm with him when he takes on Lorenzo Sonego in the last 16 of Wimbledon after his public plea came good. Shelton beat Martin Fucsovics on Saturday evening 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-2 to equal his best ever run at Wimbledon – and he has put his form down to his comfort off the court. The American left-hander served rockets and powered his way past the world No.105 on Court One. The No.10 seed is yet to drop a set in wins over Alex Bolt, Rinky Hijikata and Fucsovics and will be the favourite when he takes on Sonego on Monday after the Italian clinched a five-set win. Sonego battled past Brandon Nakashima in the longest match of the tournament so far, at five hours and four minutes. And if he is going to reach the quarter finals then Sonego will have to overcome Shelton and his lucky charm: his sister Emma. Speaking to BBC interviewer Rishi Persad after beating Fucsovics, Shelton said: 'I've been playing well this week. It's not just me here, I have a great team. My parents are here, my girlfriend is here. Also, my sister is here – she's been here for every match I've played at this tournament so far, she's been a lucky charm. 'But she has work back in the US starting Monday. She works for Morgan Stanley…' The mention of the American investment bank sparked boos from the Wimbledon crowd, with the cameras catching Emma hiding her face and laughing. After hearing boos, Shelton responded: 'Hey! Come on now! She works for Morgan Stanley, so if any of y'all have connects and can get her a couple more days off so we can keep this rolling, that'd be great!' The 22-year-old later had some good news to share with his 1 million Instagram followers. In a clip showing his sister celebrating after getting off the phone, Shelton said with a grin: 'Yo, you got the week off, or what? Shout out Morgan Stanley.' Shelton has been loving his time in south west London. 'I had a lot of fun,' he said. 'It's always special playing at Wimbledon. This is my third time playing on Court No 1. Hopefully I get a few more matches on one of these two big courts. I'm trying to make my way to Centre Court. Maybe I'll get there one day.' Speaking about his team, he added: 'Yeah, it's huge, not just being on the court, but we're staying in a house. To have friends and family, people to hang out with, people my age, it's nice. We've really enjoyed it. 'Obviously [I'm] really close to my sister. So all of us have kind of, you know, been having fun this week, enjoying the off days. The match days the same. 'Yeah, it's been great. It's important to me. The tennis season's long. The times where you can get people together to come [and] travel with you or be at a tournament, especially if it's a big tournament, it's a lot of fun. I know that me and my whole family, everybody enjoys it.'

Sporting Lisbon take action after Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres 'strike' threat
Viktor Gyokeres is a transfer target for Arsenal this summer and his future could soon be resolved after reports the Gunners made a breakthrough with Sporting CP amid the prospect of a strike Sporting CP have taken the drastic move to DELAY Viktor Gyokeres' return to pre-season training after the striker's supposed threat to go on strike. The Arsenal target has been embroiled in an explosive spat with Sporting president Frederico Varandas over the fee he is able to depart for as he seeks a move. Mirror Football understands Gyokeres, whose team-mates return to training on Monday, has been handed a four-day extension until Friday, as Sporting chiefs attempt to diffuse the conflict. The new deadline is the day before Sporting travel to the Algarve for a training camp. While a contingent of Sporting's first-team stars will be conducting physical testing, the club will be left sweating over Gyokeres' future prospects. And Arsenal may sense an opportunity to achieve a breakthrough to land a new striker. Gyokeres and his agent Hasan Cetinkaya made the strike threat after they believed the club reneged on an agreement to make the Sweden international available for £60million. Sporting president Frederico Varandas rejected the details of Cetinkaya's claim, with Gyokeres' anger said to stem from his belief that the Portuguese giants are demanding £67m - a figure still below his release clause, which will not be required to be met this summer. Varandas has remained adamant Gyokeres will only be sold for a fair value and suggested: "Threats, blackmail and insults don't work with me." Though his star striker's delayed return indicates the situation is far from simple. While blasting Gyokeres' agent in a stunning statement last month, Varandas said there was yet to even be an offer on the table for the 50-goal striker. But there was an admission that a deal below his release clause would be facilitated in a bid to allow Gyokeres to chase Champions League football. Since then, Gyokeres is said to have rebuffed two monster offers from the Saudi Pro League. Al-Hilal and Al-Qadisiyah are noted to have made offers to the player worth £11m-a-year. Gyokeres has snubbed all proposals with a move to the Premier League and Arsenal his preference. And now he must wait to see if the Gunners can strike a deal. The north London side have long target a striker with Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko deemed to be club targets this summer to help Mikel Arteta's team go one better in the Premier League. Andrea Berta has been working on deals for both players and while Sesko was understood to be the club's top target, reports have claimed a breakthrough in talks over Gyokeres. Arsenal and Sporting are said to now be in 'advanced talks' over a deal for the ex-Coventry forward. Gyokeres is believed to have already agreed a five-year deal with the Gunners to make the move to the Emirates. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
