Amanzimtoti lad to compete overseas

The Citizen16-06-2025
COUNTLESS hours of practise and fierce discipline have paid off for Amanzimtoti canoeist Jimmy Papadopoulos, 18, after he was selected to represent South Africa at the the Auronzo International Sprint Regatta in Italy this month, and at the International Canoe Federation Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Portugal from July 23 to 27.

Jimmy began his canoeing journey at the age of eight under the guidance of his first coach, Brent Chiazzari of the Toti Canoe Club. Currently he is coached by Olympian paddler Tiffany Koch.
'When I saw the official announcement that I had been selected for the South African team to compete in Portugal, I was absolutely over the moon. I couldn't stop smiling the entire afternoon. I immediately started messaging all my friends and family, although most of them already knew, as my mother had proudly shared the news the moment it was released,' said Jimmy.
This will be his first time representing South Africa on the world stage, and he is deeply honoured. He is in peak physical condition, having trained around 10 hours per week.
'Four of those hours are in the gym early in the mornings before school, and the remaining six are spent on the water, putting in focused paddling sessions. Mentally, I've been watching as many race videos as I can from previous events held in Portugal on the same course. This helps me visualise the environment so that it feels familiar when I finally get there to compete,' he said.

Canoeing gives Jimmy the opportunity to challenge himself and push his limits. He said what he loves the most is being able to measure his progress each year at the South African sprint championships, where he races against some of the fastest boys in the country.
'I'm incredibly fortunate to be sponsored for both international trips. For the Italy tour, my parents created a Back-a-Buddy campaign, and I'm immensely grateful to the Toti Canoe Club and all my friends and family who supported me through that. For the Portugal World Championships, I'm fortunate enough to say that KZN Canoeing has sourced funding, and I'm very thankful for their support,' he said.

Gayton on son's PSL club purchase: 'My family has the resources'

Minister of Sport, Art and Culture Gayton McKenzie has broken his silence on his son Calvin Le John's purchase of PSL soccer club, SuperSport United. The R50 million purchase, via a consortium, took place during a closed bidding process. Calvin, also a prominent businessman, dropped his father's last name in recent years. He plans to change its name to Siwelele FC and fill the void of the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic, which later became Royal AM. Speaking to eNCA's Percy Young, Gayton McKenzie addressed the contentious issue of his son Calvin Le John's purchase of SuperSport United. The Minister of Sport insisted that he was not involved in the closed bidding deal. He said: 'I'm at arm's length. But there are family members who dug into their pockets and got the team, they got SuperSport United. 'But there's no link to me, and there shouldn't be a link. 'My involvement was actively, publicly telling South Africans that I was going to make sure that Siwelele returns to the Free State. It's about to happen.' Gayton jokingly added: 'As a minister, when I get reshuffled, I will go look for a job there, as a mascot'. While Gayton McKenzie claims he was not involved in the SuperSport United deal, he does hope that the club will fill a void left by his favourite PSL club, Bloemfontein Celtic. He continued: 'The only time my family was together, and the only time my father hugged me, was when Celtic scored a goal. It's very emotional for my family. My son has taken over my family business, because as a minister, we're not allowed to have businesses. Gayton McKenzie's son has purchased PSL club SuperSport United. Images via X 'He was at the deathbed of my father, and the last thing he spoke about was Celtic. 'We can't sit here when my family has the resources…people in the Free State are suffering. That can never happen'. Last month, Gayton McKenzie, in his capacity as Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, vowed that Bloemfontein Celtic, under its nickname Siwelele, would return to the PSL. What he did not mention was his son's investment. He told reporters: 'I'm still meeting the people who will fulfill that promise. Siwelele or Phunya Sele Sele is coming back. I can promise. I can't make promises that I can't keep as a minister. I'm a politician. He added: 'They are on track, and I trust them absolutely because I know them.' 'I asked them if they were still on track with bringing Celtic back. They said they are 100% on track to bring Celtic back'. According to , Free State businessman Edward Modise owns the naming rights to Bloemfontein Celtic. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 . Proteas all-rounder revival brings an end to post-Kallis era

Proteas all-rounder Wiaan Mulder will captain South Africa in the second Test against Zimbabwe, starting on Sunday. Photo: BackpagePix That didn't stop South African cricket from trying. In the years since, many all-rounders have come and gone as the Proteas searched in vain for someone who even remotely resembled the greatness of Kallis. It soon became clear that the pursuit was more fairytale than reality. On that Boxing Day Test at Kingsmead in 2013, South African cricket — along with the wider cricketing world — recognised that Kallis' retirement marked the end of an era. A cricketer of his calibre, offering genuine world-class skill with both bat and ball, would likely never grace the field again. A little over a decade ago, the greatest all-rounder the sport of cricket has ever seen, Jacques Kallis, walked away from the game, concluding a career that spanned almost two decades. The surreal feeling of scoring your maiden Test century and claiming your maiden five-wicket haul in the same match! 🤯🔥 Corbin Bosch delivered a powerhouse performance, etching his name into the history books with match-defining moments that showcased his exceptional… Then, in 2016, a teenager still clad in his St Stithians school uniform burst onto the domestic scene. Wiaan Mulder was dismantling seasoned professionals with both bat and ball for the Lions, and suddenly, hopes of discovering the next great Proteas all-rounder reignited. Mulder's early rise saw him fast-tracked into the national set-up, burdened with the near-impossible expectation of replicating Kallis' standards. But international cricket is unforgiving, and those lofty comparisons quickly became suffocating. Despite solid domestic performances, Mulder struggled to make a lasting impact at the highest level, and the once-hopeful conversation began to fade. Fast forward a few years, and a new name emerged — Marco Jansen. Towering and talented, Jansen made an immediate impact with both bat and ball. At the same time, Mulder quietly rebuilt his game. He recently scored his maiden Test century in subcontinent conditions, cementing his role as South Africa's first-choice Test all-rounder. Mulder has since added a second Test century, this time batting at No. 3, and is now on the cusp of leading the side for the first time — set to captain the Proteas in the upcoming second Test against Zimbabwe later this week. Meanwhile, Corbin Bosch has wasted no time making headlines. In just two Test matches, the emerging all-rounder has already notched up a five-wicket haul, a century, and a fifty — a remarkable start that further bolsters the Proteas' all-rounder stocks. It is, of course, still early days. But for the first time in years, South African cricket can begin to dream again — not of replacing Kallis with a single player, but of cultivating a group of versatile, match-ready all-rounders who can deliver when called upon. Lingering behind that front line of Mulder, Jansen, and Bosch is Senuran Muthusamy — a reliable slow left-armer with a solid batting pedigree. In his four-match Test career so far, he has one fifty to his name and continues to offer balance and control. Beyond the national squad, domestic cricket is also producing a promising crop. The Dolphins' Jason Smith, the Lions' Beyers Swanepoel, and Western Province's George Linde are among those keeping the pipeline of talent flowing. Jacques Kallis may have been a once-in-a-generation cricketer, but a new era of South African all-rounders is quietly emerging. And while none may wear the mantle of 'the next Kallis', together, they could form the backbone of a revitalised Proteas side for years to come.
