Karnataka minister addresses heart attack deaths: ‘No increase, nothing to panic'

"Getting your heart checked once a year is sufficient. There's no need to panic and visit hospitals out of fear," said Sharan Prakash Patil, Karnataka's minister for medical education on Tuesday. The belief that these cases are occurring only in Hassan is incorrect, Patil said.(ANI) 'The average number of heart attack cases is similar to last year,' Patil said, clarifying that there is no need to panic over the reportedly 'increasing' cases of heart attacks. 'The government is taking appropriate measures,' he affirmed. What caused panic in the state? Patil noted that after reports of a surge in heart attack cases in the state's Hassan district, patients have been swarming hospitals like the renowned Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, in Bengaluru. 'There has been a rise in people seeking preventive checks as well. This has created an unusual situation,' he added. He assured that a study is being conducted on the deaths of 24 individuals in Hassan. Further talking of the deaths in Hassan, he said that based on preliminary findings, among the 24 cases, only 10 were due to heart attacks and that the remaining were due to other causes. Does Covid-19 vaccine trigger heart attacks? Patil clarified that there is no link between the Covid-19 vaccine and the heart attack cases. 'People should not doubt the vaccine. The belief that these cases are occurring only in Hassan is incorrect,' he confirmed. Patil further explained that the lifestyle changes brought by the post Covid scenario have led to a rise in diabetes and blood pressure cases. "Dietary habits have changed, and stress levels have increased. We are studying the reasons behind the rise in deaths among youth," he added. 'Focus on lifestyle' Patil urged people to focus on leading a healthy lifestyle instead of being scared of heart attacks. He stressed on getting adequate sleep, and exercising regularly. 'Only those showing symptoms of heart-related illness should go for a medical check-up. Don't rush to hospitals without a reason,' he advised. Have heart attack cases increased in the state? An expert analysis led by cardiologist KS Ravindranath at Bengaluru's Jayadeva Hospital discovered that the number of deaths from heart attacks has not increased. According to a release by the authorities, in January, 178 people were admitted, with 11 deaths reported. In February, 10 out of 181 patients died, in March, 9 out of 200 died and in Bengaluru, 2,165 were hospitalised, with 101 deaths reported. Do children need screening? Karnataka health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said that there is no need for screening children for heart diseases. 'We will be organising awareness programmes through Jayadeva Hospital. We are also taking strict action on roadside food vendors and unhygienic food preparation methods,' he said. Reiterating what Patil said about a healthy lifestyle, Rao urged people to stick to traditional dietary practices. He also recommended yoga as a highly beneficial habit.

NRIs turning to India for high-quality quality affordable healthcare, customers up 150% YoY in FY25: Report

New Delhi [India], July 28 (ANI): Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) are increasingly choosing India as their destination for high-quality and affordable healthcare, according to the data released by Policybazaar. The data showed a significant 150 per cent growth in the share of NRI customers in FY 2024-25 compared to FY 2023-24, highlighting India's growing appeal in the global medical tourism space. It stated, "India is fast emerging as one of the world's most sought-after medical tourism hubs. The growth is quite visible with more NRIs turning to India to access high-quality healthcare. Our data indicates a 150 per cent overall growth in the share of NRI customers in FY 25". One of the key reasons behind this mentioned in the data report is the surge is the massive cost advantage India offers for medical treatments when compared to countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. For instance, heart bypass surgery in India costs between USD 5,000 and USD 8,000, while the same procedure in the U.S. can cost between USD 70,000 and USD 150,000. Similarly, a knee replacement surgery costs only USD 4,000 to USD 6,000 in India, compared to USD 30,000 to USD 50,000 in the U.S. A liver transplant in India is priced between USD 25,000 and USD 35,000, whereas it costs USD 300,000 to USD 500,000 in the U.S. NRIs opting for elective procedures in India typically have average claim amounts ranging from USD 2,000 to USD 15,000. For more complex surgeries, the claims may rise to USD 20,000 to USD 40,000, still representing considerable savings when compared to international healthcare costs. The affordability factor also extends to health insurance premiums. In India, the average annual health insurance premium per person ranges from USD 120 to USD 300. In contrast, the same coverage in the U.S. can exceed USD 8,000 annually, while in GCC countries, it ranges from USD 4,000 to USD 5,000. This significant difference has led to a visible increase in online searches by NRIs exploring health insurance options in India for themselves and their families. The data further reveals a 125 per cent surge in the share of women NRI customers and a 148 per cent increase in the number of NRI customers under the age of 35. This showed that younger NRIs and women are increasingly considering Indian healthcare as a preferred choice. When it comes to preferred locations for treatment, South Indian cities continue to dominate the list across all tiers. Cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune, and Thane are also gaining popularity among NRI patients. With a combination of quality care, advanced medical infrastructure, and substantial cost benefits, India is rapidly emerging as a leading hub for NRI medical needs. (ANI)

Doing THIS for just 5 minutes daily can protect the heart! here's how

Your heart, along with the brain, is the most important organ of the body that pumps blood through your entire body. With age and poor eating habits, the heart sometimes begins to turn weak, and becomes inefficient, leading to blocked arteries that can result in a sudden heart attack. However, apart from diet and exercise, there are some other things you can do to protect your heart, out of which the Ganesh Mudra in Yoga has multiple benefits. Here is how... What is Ganesh Mudra Ganesh Mudra involves the practice of finger interlocking with a specific arrangement and elbow extension to form the hand position. You should perform this practice with deep breathing at chest height, to activate your heart zone, while energy flows from head to toe. The practice connects to the heart chakra (Anahata) that controls love and emotional balance and compassion. When you practice Ganesh Mudra consistently, you will break down mental and physical barriers to build inner power and endurance. The sequence should be performed six times before you reverse hand positions, to repeat the exercise another six times. Benefits for Heart Health Your heart experiences both physical and energetic benefits through Ganesh Mudra practice: The heart muscle gains strength from the gentle finger resistance you create by separating your hands, because it activates and strengthens the heart and chest muscles. The stretch enhances blood circulation which improves heart and lung efficiency, thus delivering better oxygenation to your body and easier breathing. The practice of Ganesh Mudra unclogs energy flow in the heart chakra, thus creating emotional freedom alongside increased affection and sympathy. Through its ability to stimulate the fire element in your body, Ganesh Mudra increases digestion and energy production which are important elements for maintaining heart health. Benefits for Anxiety and Stress Anxiety develops from physical tension which blocks the flow of energy in the heart and chest region. Ganesh Mudra provides several ways to address these conditions: The physical movement and slow breathing technique of Ganesh Mudra works to reduce stress while releasing tension from the chest and lungs, which normally intensify anxiety symptoms. The practice of this mudra activates inner strength which increases your confidence levels and mental courage, to tackle challenges peacefully. Regular practice of this mudra brings positive emotional effects by clearing out sadness and depressive thoughts, as well as negative feelings. Some other benefits Ganesh Mudra removes toxic substances while enhancing lung and chest capabilities, which benefits patients with asthma. The mudra also enhances chest muscles, as well as shoulder and arm and neck muscles to improve posture and minimize spondylitis and neck pain. The practice of Ganesh Mudra activates Manipura (solar plexus) chakra to enhance digestive juice secretion and metabolic function while stimulating the fire element. The practice leads to improved mental confidence and focus, which develops inner strength and courage, while enhancing mental clarity to handle challenging situations with composure. Relieves Pain and Tension: Through regular practice one can obtain relief from chest and shoulder pain, and minimise muscle tension which leads to complete physical comfort and relaxation. Regular practice brings mood improvement, reduces sadness and negative thoughts and depressive feelings, while it fosters peace and self-love. How Often and When to Practice The Ganesh Mudra provides its best results when practiced daily for 5-10 minutes, as a meditation or pranayama companion. The stretches should be repeated six times on each side.
