Slovenia says will ban weapons trade with Israel over Gaza conflict
Slovenia's government has frequently criticized Israel over the conflict, and last year moved to recognize a Palestinian state as part of efforts to end the fighting in Gaza as soon as possible.
'Slovenia is the first European country to ban the import, export and transit of weapons to and from Israel,' the government said in a statement late Thursday.
It said it was moving ahead 'independently' because the bloc was 'unable to adopt concrete measures... due to internal disagreements and disunity.'
Amid the devastating war in Gaza, where 'people... are dying because humanitarian aid is systematically denied them,' it was the 'duty of every responsible state to take action, even if it means taking a step ahead of others,' the statement said.
It added that the government had not issued any permits for the export of military weapons and equipment to Israel since October 2023 because of the conflict.
Early in July, Slovenia — also in a EU first — banned two far-right Israeli ministers from entering the country.
It declared both Israelis 'persona non grata,' accusing them of inciting 'extreme violence and serious violations of the human rights of Palestinians' with 'their genocidal statements.'
In June 2024, Slovenia's parliament passed a decree recognizing Palestinian statehood, following in the steps of Ireland, Norway and Spain, in moves partly fueled by condemnation of Israel's bombing of Gaza after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel.

Italian judges dismiss case against Meloni over release of Libyan suspect

'I maintain that this government acts cohesively under my leadership: every decision, especially one so important, is agreed upon. It is therefore absurd to request that Piantedosi, Nordio and Mantovano stand trial, but not myself, before them,' Meloni wrote on X. The ICC has been investigating allegations of serious crimes committed in Libya since the country's 2011 civil war following a referral by the UN Security Council. Justice Minister Nordio told parliament in February that Italy had no choice but to free Elmasry due to mistakes and inaccuracies in the arrest warrant.

Israeli government votes to dismiss attorney general, escalating standoff with judiciary
JERUSALEM: The Israeli Cabinet on Monday voted unanimously to fire the attorney general, escalating a long-running standoff between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the judiciary that critics see as a threat to the country's democratic institutions. The Supreme Court froze the move while it considers the legality. Netanyahu and his supporters accuse Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara of exceeding her powers by blocking decisions by the elected government, including a move to fire the head of Israel's domestic security agency, another ostensibly apolitical office. In a statement, the group accused the government of changing dismissal procedures only after failing to legally remove Baharav-Miara under the existing rules. It also cited a conflict of interest related to Netanyahu's ongoing trial. 'This decision turns the role of the attorney general into a political appointment,' the group said. 'The legal battle will continue until this flawed decision is overturned.'
