PORT KLANG, Selangor - A three-year-old boy was among three people who died after a boat capsized at sea on June 6.
Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the tragedy occurred 0.3 nautical miles west of Tanjung Harapan.
The recovered remains include the boy, Darren Gan, and two others, Mr Cheu Son Hin, 50, and Mr Fong Yong Sen, 29.
The child's parents, Mr Gan Hon Tat, 32, and Ms Careen Man, 29, from Klang Utama, are still missing.
The sixth passenger, Mr Alvin Chang Yan Qin, 17, was rescued alive.
'Selangor MMEA is currently conducting a search and rescue operation for the couple,' said Captain Abdul Muhaimin, adding that the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Johor Bahru activated the rescue mission at 5.15pm on June 6.
A search and rescue operations centre has been set up at the Selangor MMEA office to coordinate efforts.
The Marine Police, MMEA, and Fire and Rescue Department are involved in the operations.
Capt Abdul Muhaimin stated the Fire and Rescue Department would continue rescue work as Mr Gan and Ms Man may still be in the boat, which is partially covered in mud.
'The boat has been towed to the Selangor MMEA's floating jetty,' he added.
Initial investigations suggest the boat may have capsized after losing control.
'Maritime Malaysia reminds the public to prioritise safety aspects when engaging in activities at sea.
'The use of safety jackets, monitoring weather conditions, and expertise in handling boats are essential considerations.
'Maritime Malaysia urges the public to pray for the safe rescue of the missing persons,' he added.
Capt Abdul Muhaimin urged anyone with information about maritime emergencies to contact the Selangor MMEA operations centre at 03-3176 0627 or call the emergency line at 999.
Meanwhile, Sekinchan Fishermen Association adviser Chia Tian Hee recently told The Star that the sea has become unpredictable.
He noted that big waves now appear without warning, causing havoc for fishing boats.
'In the past, waves would start small, warning fishermen that the sea was about to become choppy, allowing them to return ashore.
'But now, big waves emerge suddenly and aggressively. There have been instances where fishing boats capsized, but luckily there were no fatalities,' Mr Chia said. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

Ukraine drone attack disrupts Volgograd railway power, Russia says

Falling debris from destroyed Ukrainian drones disrupted railway power supply and train operations in part of the Volgograd region, the administration of the region in Russia's south said on Sunday. There were no injuries as a result of the attacks, the administration said on the Telegram messaging app, citing Governor Andrei Bocharov. Russia's defence ministry said on Telegram that its air defence units had destroyed nine Ukrainian drones over the region. In total Russia downed 99 drones overnight over 12 Russian regions, the Crimean Peninsula and the Black Sea, the ministry said. Russia's civil aviation authority Rosaviatsia said on Telegram that it had suspended flights soon after midnight at the airport in the city of Volgograd, the administrative centre of the Volgograd region. The flights had not resumed on Sunday morning. Because of the attack, trains were delayed in parts of the region, RIA state news agency reported. The extent of the damage inflicted by the Ukrainian drone attack was not clear. The Russian defence ministry reports only how many drones its units destroy, not how many Ukraine launches. There was no comment from Ukraine. Kyiv has often said that its attacks are in response to Moscow's relentless strikes on Ukraine since Moscow invaded in 2022 and are aimed at destroying infrastructure key to Russia's war efforts. Nine killed in courthouse attack in Iran's Sistan-Baluchestan province, Iranian media report

At least nine people were killed in an armed attack by the Sunni Jaish al-Adl Baluch group on a courthouse in Iran's restive Sistan-Baluchestan province on Saturday, including three of the assailants, state media reported. Another 22 were injured, according to the report. Jaish al-Adl confirmed the deaths of its three members in the clashes with security forces in Zahedan, the capital of the far southeastern province bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan. Sistan-Baluchestan is home to Iran's Sunni Muslim Baluch minority, who have long complained of economic marginalisation and political exclusion. A toddler and a 60-year-old woman were among those killed, as well as three soldiers and law enforcement personnel assigned to the courthouse, the head of the province's judiciary told IRNA. He did not identify the sixth dead person. He said the attackers wore explosive vests and carried grenades. It was not clear if they had detonated them. Jaish al-Adl, which claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement on its Telegram account, said it had killed at least 30 members of the judiciary and security forces. It said it targeted judges and court personnel, whom it accused of issuing death sentences and house demolition orders to Baluch citizens. "We warn all judges and employees of the judiciary that Baluchestan will no longer be a safe place for them and death will follow them like terrifying shadows until retribution," the group said in its statement. The Baluch human rights group HAALVSH, quoting eyewitnesses, said several judiciary staff members and security personnel were killed or wounded when the assailants stormed the judges' chambers. Sistan-Baluchestan is frequently hit by clashes between security forces and armed groups, including Sunni militants and separatists who say they are fighting for greater rights and autonomy. Tehran accuses some of them of ties to foreign powers and involvement in cross-border smuggling and insurgency. REUTERS
