Spider-Man Director Jon Watts Reveals Why He Exited The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Jon Watts said he feels exhausted after the Spider-Man trilogy due to COVID protocols, the lengthy post-production process and a general feeling of burnout.
Jon Watts left The Fantastic Four: First Steps because he was 'out of gas". The 43-year-old filmmaker – who directed Tom Holland's Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Spider-Man trilogy – was due to helm the upcoming superhero blockbuster, though he exited the project in April 2022, allowing WandaVision's Matt Shakman to take the job that September.
Now, Watts has explained that 'the emotional strain" of COVID protocols, the lengthy post-production process and a general feeling of burnout following Spider-Man: No Way Home ultimately pushed him to leave The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Speaking on a panel at the Mediterrane Film Festival, he said: 'The emotional strain of having to go through all of those COVID protocols while also trying to make something creative while also trying to make sure that your cast and crew were all safe – literally people could've died if you did things wrong – that, and the post-production process was very difficult."
He added: 'When you're doing [visual effects work], there's a whole international component to it where you're using vendors from all over the world, and the supply chain had been interrupted because of COVID. It was really hard to get effects done in a traditional way.
'By the time No Way Home was done and out, I went in to get back into the story for Fantastic Four. I was like, 'I am out of gas.' The COVID layer on top of making a giant movie layer, I knew I didn't have what it would've taken to make that movie great. I was just out of steam, so I just needed to take some time to recover."
Watts added Marvel 'totally understood" his decision to walk away from The Fantastic Four: First Steps. He said: 'Everyone at Marvel totally understood. They had been through it with me as well, so they knew how hard and draining that experience has been; in the end, very satisfying, but at some point, if you can't do it at the level that you feel like you need to for it to be great, then it's better to not do it."
Even so, Watts said he was 'very excited" to see The Fantastic Four: First Steps when it hits cinemas on 25 July. He said: 'I don't know exactly what happens in it. But I've seen the trailers, I've heard a couple of things. I think it's pretty close to what we had initially come up with in our story. Obviously, it evolves and adapts over time, but the main villain, the basic threat, the broad strokes … retrofuturism version of Fantastic Four … It's going to be a totally surreal experience for me to go and watch that movie."
The Fantastic Four: First Steps – which stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon-Moss Bachrach – follows the titular team as they gain extraordinary powers after a cosmic accident during their exploration of outer space. As they grapple with their new identities, the Fantastic Four must unite to stop the rising threat of Galactus, who could destroy Earth.

His Guardians films were among the lower-performing entries from the MCU in India as compared to the West. Moreover, the superhero genre itself has seen a slowdown in recent years, following a peak in the late 2010s and early 2020s. Taking all of that into account, the opening for Superman is a respectable one. In fact, relative to its softer start overseas outside the US, India is among the better markets for it. The film will aim to get a good growth over the weekend and then sustain from there.

Julian McMahons cause of death revealed week after actors passing
Washington DC [US], July 12 (ANI): More than a week after actor Julian McMahon passed away, the official cause of his death has now been confirmed. McMahon died on July 2 in Clearwater, Florida. He was 56 years old. His family had previously shared that he had been privately fighting cancer. Now, according to a report from the Pinellas County Medical Examiner's Office, his death was caused by lung metastasis due to head and neck metastatic cancer, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Julian McMahon was a well-known Australian actor who starred in several popular TV shows and movies. He was best known for his roles in Charmed, Nip/Tuck, and the Fantastic Four films. This year, he also appeared in The Residence and The Surfer. His wife, Kelly McMahon, had earlier shared a heartfelt statement with THR soon after his passing. Her statement read, "With an open heart, I wish to share with the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon, died peacefully this week after a valiant effort to overcome cancer. Julian loved life. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his work, and he loved his fans," she said. "His deepest wish was to bring joy into as many lives as possible. We ask for support during this time to allow our family to grieve in privacy. We also wish for all of those to whom Julian brought joy, to continue to find joy in life. We are grateful for the memories." Following his death, many of his co-stars shared their condolences. Can Tollywood films make debut in Hollywood?
Hyderabad: Tollywood, India's Telugu language film industry, despite its transnational popularity, is yet to make a debut in Hollywood or at least see simultaneous theatrical release of its much-vaunted films in Hollywood. This gap is puzzling, especially with international blockbusters like 'RRR', 'Baahubali', and 'Pushpa: The Rule' winning audiences and awards beyond Indian shores. So, what's holding Tollywood back from making a full-fledged Hollywood debut? This conversation resurfaced recently when a Hollywood film allegedly copied the tune of the viral Telugu song 'Oo Antava' from 'Pushpa'. While fans called out the blatant plagiarism, many viewed it as a testament to Tollywood's growing cultural influence. Speaking about the potential of a Hollywood breakthrough, film director Prashanth Varma ('Hanu-Man' fame) remarked, 'We have the content, scale, and now even the audience abroad. But what we lack is structured international distribution. Unlike Bollywood, which has established pipelines in the West, Tollywood is still playing catch-up.' Tollywood's primary roadblock lies in Hollywood's complex theatrical ecosystem. A simultaneous release in the U.S. requires robust marketing, media tie-ins, and partnerships with established Western distributors - none of which can be achieved without significant investment and planning. As Indian cinema scales new heights, including inter alia in countries like Japan and China, the next big leap for Tollywood could be landing alongside Hollywood's giants - on the same release day, in the same theatres, across the globe. The red carpet, it seems, is already being rolled out.
