Badenoch vows ‘mission of renewal' as Cleverly returns in Tory reshuffle
Kemi Badenoch said her shadow cabinet shake-up reflects the Tories' 'mission of renewal' after a series of changes to her top team saw Sir James Cleverly return to the front bench. The former foreign secretary will shadow Angela Rayner in the housing, communities and local government brief, while ex-Conservative Party chairman Richard Holden becomes shadow transport secretary. Sir James served in the Foreign Office and as home secretary when the Conservatives were in power before spending months on the back benches after coming third in the Tory leadership contest last year. The MP for Braintree in Essex has since used his influential position as a former minister to warn against pursuing a populist agenda akin to Nigel Farage's Reform UK. ADVERTISEMENT He has also urged the Conservatives to reject climate change 'luddites' on the right who believe 'the way things are now is just fine,' in a speech widely seen as at odds with the net zero stance of the Tory leader. His frontbench comeback is among a series of appointments made by Mrs Badenoch on Tuesday, also including Kevin Hollinrake as party chairman, replacing Nigel Huddleston, who will become shadow culture secretary. Stuart Andrew will become shadow health secretary, replacing Edward Argar, who resigned citing health reasons. Julia Lopez has been appointed shadow science secretary, taking over from Alan Mak, who has left the shadow cabinet. Gareth Bacon has been replaced by Mr Holden in his transport brief and demoted from the shadow cabinet, but remains minister for London. The former leadership contender has strayed well beyond his justice brief, building a prominent social media presence with campaigns on a range of issues from tackling fare dodgers on the London Underground to the impact of immigration on housing. Labour Party chairwoman Ellie Reeves said: 'No amount of deckchair shuffling can hide that the architects of 14 years of Tory failure still sit around Kemi Badenoch's top table. Greater Manchester street mourns the loss of "local boy" following e-bike crash
Members of a community have expressed their shock following the death of a 15-year-old boy in a tragic crash involving an e-bike. Police were called to reports of the collision on Rowrah Crescent in Middleton at around 11:55am on Tuesday (July 22). Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene. His family are being supported by officers, say GMP. A 59-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and and remains in custody for questioning. Another 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of theft as part of the investigation. Detectives, PCSOs and CSI officers were spotted carrying out their work on the street. Some residents stop and stare, understandably curious for any update, however, a majority of neighbours opted to stay inside. One neighbour who knew the boy and his family well said: "This involves the family of my friend. When something like this happens you just try to keep out of the way because it's a sad thing." Another resident added: "There was a big commotion, I was inside when it happened but when I came out loads of people and police were on the street. "I didn't know what happened at first, but they said a young boy has lost his life. I knew the boy, he was local to the area and very well known. It's such a sad situation." Another resident who said they knew of the teenager told the M.E.N: "He was a top, top lad. Lived on this estate all his life and a lot of people knew him. "He was very respectable, obviously it's a horrible thing to happen to him and his family." Officers are working to establish the full circumstances of the incident and are investigating allegations of a theft in the events leading up to the collision. Detective Chief Inspector Christopher Dean, from GMP's Rochdale district, said: 'This terrible incident has seen the death of a teenage boy, and we are working hard to establish the full facts of this case, in what is the very early stages of an investigation. 'A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and will be questioned in due course, while officers are already in place to support the family of the boy who has died today. "I want to remind people that at the heart of this is a grieving family, and I would ask the community to not speculate on social media while we piece together the events of earlier today. 'As our work progresses, I would ask anyone with information to please come forward – whether you witnessed anything or have any dashcam, CCTV, or doorbell footage from the area.' Rosie Roche's cause of death has been revealed. The 20-year-old cousin of Prince William and Prince Harry was found dead in her Wiltshire home on July 14. She was killed by a 'traumatic head injury,' according to reporting by The Independent, Gazette and Herald and the Daily Mail, which cited the Wiltshire and Swindon coroner. The Wiltshire and Swindon coroner did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. It was reported earlier that Roche's mother and sister found her deceased in their home after she began packing for a vacation with friends. A firearm was allegedly found close by inside the property. Following her death, an investigation was opened by the Wiltshire and Swindon coroner. Coroner Grant Davies said that police "have deemed the death as non-suspicious and there was no third-party involvement," per The Sun. A spokeswoman told The Sun that the royal family's cousin "will be sorely missed." Professor Wendy Powers, the principal of University College, where Roche attended, also told The Independent that staff and students are 'extremely saddened' by her death. She noted that she was 'loved for her creativity, energy, her love of books, poetry and travel among many other talents.' In an obituary published by the Yorkshire Post on Saturday, July 19, family members remembered Roche as a "darling" daughter, sister and granddaughter.' "Roche, Rosie Jeanne Burke.
