The Best Cities and Islands in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific of 2025

The Best Cities and Islands in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific of 2025

In what other part of the world do global cities and remote island nations have such strong ties?
The vast, diverse area of Oceania encompasses large islands like Australia, New Zealand, and New Guinea, but it's also home to more than 10,000 smaller islands and archipelagos that sweep across the South Pacific. This balance between petite isles and more well-known destinations makes it a dream region for many travelers, who will sometimes spend several weeks traveling between multiple stops.
But what are our readers' favorite places to visit in this special part of the world? Keep reading to find out. Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe—to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 180,000 T+L readers completed the 2025 survey. A total of more than 657,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.). Cities were specifically rated on the criteria below: Sights/landmarks Culture Food Friendliness Shopping Value For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses. Islands were specifically rated on the criteria below: Natural attractions/beaches Activities/sights Restaurants/food People/friendliness Value For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

This year, four out of the five top-rated cities can be found in Australia, by far the most populous country in the region. These include metropolises like Sydney (No. 3), but also smaller cities that travelers might visit on a longer itinerary or return trip. Take Hobart (No. 2), a fraction of the size of Sydney, with just around a quarter million inhabitants. T+L readers also voted in numbers for Adelaide (No. 5), the capital of South Australia. One person described it as 'one of the most underrated but fabulous cities in the world," while another fondly remembered the 'wonderful wine regions outside of town."
The sole ranking New Zealand city is not Auckland, its largest population center, or the South Island city of Christchurch—but Queenstown (No. 4): a lakeside resort town on the South Island surrounded by ruggedly beautiful mountains. Though the city itself is small, it's 'active and outdoor-oriented,' says one survey respondent, and it makes a great home base for hiking, adventure sports, and boating on Lake Wakatipu. However, the landscapes alone are reason enough to visit. One reader called Queenstown 'the most beautiful location I've ever laid eyes on.'

This year's reader-favorite city in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific is Melbourne: the capital of Victoria, often described as Australia's cultural capital for its rich visual and performing arts scenes, diverse restaurants, and world-renowned coffee culture. T+L readers praised Melbourne for its natural beauty, walkable neighborhoods, 'excellent public transportation,' and overall value for travelers. While there's arguably enough to see, do, and eat here to fill an entire trip, Melbourne also makes a great hub for a day trip or overnight to the sunny Mornington Peninsula or the farms and wineries of the Yarra Valley.

If populous Australia dominates the city category, it is perhaps no surprise that the smaller, much less urbanized nations of the South Pacific are best represented in the list of reader-favorite islands. This year's top five include three in French Polynesia, including iconic island destinations like Tahiti (No. 5)—but also Moorea, a smaller island sited to its northwest. It's still a popular place to visit, of course, but perhaps lower key than some of its neighbors. 'If you want a less touristy destination, then Moorea is for you,' one reader wrote.
Australia does have one winning island chain: the Great Barrier Reef Islands (No. 2), located within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Most travelers go to the region to engage with the incredibly unique ecosystem, with activities like diving, snorkeling, fishing, sailing, and whale-watching. 'An amazing adventure,' said one survey respondent. 'The tour operators really are fantastic, and the cost of a visit is worth every penny."

The top spot this year, though, takes us to the smaller islands of Oceania—keep reading for the full list.

The Melanesian archipelago of Fiji actually has more than 300 islands, though most of the population lives on the two largest: Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, where travelers can experience the country's unique blend of cultures, historic towns, and traditional villages, as well as its beautiful beaches and national parks. Of course, there are also the kind of private island resorts that honeymooners dream of. But readers made sure to get away from their hotels and explore: 'Had an amazing time learning about the culture,' one reader wrote. Another found that, even after spending 10 days 'visiting several small islands, my journey was just too short.'

‘Here's What I Thought I Was Booking:' Woman Books Trip at RV Park. Then They Arrive

This family was in for a surprise when they arrived at their resting spot for the night—and it's not the kind of surprise you want, to say the least. When people stay in an RV—whether they're living there permanently or for a short stint at a time—finding a place to park overnight isn't as easy as just picking a quiet street or a mall parking lot. For one, the RV needs to hook up to essentials like water, electricity, and a sewer system. These are amenities that you're certainly not getting curbside. On top of that, many cities have cracked down on overnight RV parking, citing safety, zoning laws, and neighborhood complaints. That's where RV parks come in. You can pay for a night, or for a weekly or monthly rate to secure your spot. And themed RV parks have started to take off, offering visitors not just a place to stay but an entire curated experience. From retro tailor parks to tiki bars, these parks become part of the adventure. But not every adventure goes (or looks) as expected. RV Park Gone Wrong In a viral video with more than 1.5 million views, content creator and author of the book Confessions of an Unhappy Housewife: How I Changed My Bullsh*t Stories to Create a Life I Love, Kirstin Smith (@tacticaltrekkers) shared how she and her family were swindled into staying at a subpar RV park. Smith lives in an RV full-time while homeschooling her four kids. Including herself and her partner, that's a family of six living the RV life. In a recent video, she revealed that she and her family were 'catfished' by the RV park they paid for. It appears to have some kind of beaver theme going on and a beautiful pool to enjoy. But when they arrived, the place looked abandoned. There was no water in the pool, and it instead looked like it was possibly in the midst of being repaired. 'Not every park meets expectations,' Smith pointed out. 'Luckily, I read the 2 [star] reviews before we arrived so I knew to set the bar lowwwwww. But sometimes you just have to laugh when you end up with the / Temu version of the park that's advertised!' Commenters React 'I mean it looked like that….. Once,' a top comment read. 'God forbid a park go for the no makeup natural look,' a person joked. 'What's the point of being open if the main attraction isn't working,' another pointed out. 'Did they forget to mention it was haunted,' a commenter wrote. How Much Does It Cost to Stay in an RV Park? Cost really depends on the type of park you're staying in. Here's some general pricing according to Outdoorsy : Budget friendly - $20 to $40 per night Mid range - $40 to $80 per night. Luxury - $80 to over $100 per night Motor1 reached out to Smith for comment via TikTok and Instagram direct message. Now Trending Dealership Worker Is Oh-So-Close To Closing Car Sale. Amazon Prime Day Has Thousands of Comfy Travel Sneakers Deals—These Are the 30 Worth Grabbing, From $29

Every seasoned traveler knows a comfy pair of shoes is the key to an enjoyable trip. Whether your vacation plans include extensive sightseeing or light exploring, a reliable pair of sneakers could be the difference between the time of your life and painfully blistered feet. But finding the perfect kicks isn't always as easy as it sounds. After all, there are other factors to consider besides comfort—will the shoes pack neatly into a suitcase? Do they complement the outfits you plan to pack? Lucky for you, we've taken the guesswork out of shopping for comfy travel sneakers. We thoroughly researched (and even personally tested) hundreds of sneakers and found incredible deals on the most comfortable sneakers to wear on your next trip. From rugged hiking boots to stylish walking sneakers, these are some of the best travel sneakers to buy, all for up to 61 percent off during Amazon Prime Day. Prices start at just $29. These classic New Balance sneakers are made to move. A Fresh Foam midsole provides cushioning for ultimate comfort and support as you run, while overall lightweight construction keeps your stamina up. Thick outsoles expertly tackle debris and uneven terrain to keep you comfy—and you can snag them for 30 percent off right now. Shoppers can score 21 percent off these rugged running shoes right now. We love their thick rubber sole, traction-heavy outsole, and durable mesh uppers. One shopper calls these sneakers 'amazingly comfortable,' adding that they 'love how the shoe cushions my foot and Achilles.' Asics have become a go-to for many travelers, and the Gel-Kayanos are a perfect example of why. They feature Asics' 4D Guidance System, which provides incredible stability while offering optimal cushioning for support and a soft landing on every stride. They're also quite breathable, and up to $40 off right now. Under Armour really thought of everything when they designed the Charged Surge 4 sneaker (which is currently 32 percent off). Not only do they feature a sockliner that molds to your foot, they also boast a breathable mesh upper, added ankle cushioning, a flexible toe area, and serious traction on the outsole. To top it all off, they come in dozens of colors. For 31 percent off, you can take home a brand new pair of Nike Sport Trail Running Shoes. The dedicated trail runners are made with specialized traction for ultimate grip on softer surfaces, as well as additional cushioning on the tongue and collar. Need some extra stability on your runs? These Reebok sneakers have you covered. Designed with extra durable outsoles that provide traction and support for intense movement, these shoes will support you from the ground up all day long. The shoes are also lightweight, cushioned, and versatile enough to wear from the trails to the gym. Grab them now for up to 27 percent off. If you're looking for the softest, comfiest run of your life, check out these running shoes from Brooks. They're crafted with nitrogen-infused DNA Loft V3 cushioning, a lightweight yet durable material designed for seriously soft comfort. Additionally, the uppers feature seamless Stealthfit construction, which offers both stretch and compression on runs. Cop these now for $60 off the original price. Don't let these Adidas sneakers' slip-on design fool you—these were made for snug, comfortable runs. The flexible uppers are soft and stretchy, while a Cloudfoam insole ensures support and comfort in every step. We love that these come in nearly 30 colors, each made of 20 percent recycled materials. We suggest grabbing them for just $44 while you can. It doesn't get much more stylish than the Puma Carina L Sneaker. The 80s-inspired, low-top kicks boast a modern design and premium leather uppers. A platform sole adds both aesthetic and durability, while classic Puma branding keeps things slightly sporty. They come in a dozen colors, some of which are more than 50 percent off. These stylish Vionic sneakers are versatile enough to wear anywhere. With leather and/or suede uppers as well as colorways like Bodega Blue and Phantom Grey, these shoes are fashionable and durable. Even more impressive, they boast odor-control technology, a moisture-wicking mesh liner, and an American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Acceptance. Add them to your sneaker collection now while they're up to $70 off. We love a classic court design, and this Adidas sneaker is one of the best options around. The suede and textile uppers offer comfort, durability, and a retro-cool look, while cushioned midsoles provide all-day support through a variety of activities. The shoes happen to be a number-one best-seller at Amazon, which isn't surprising considering shoppers call them 'cheaper' but 'more comfortable' than many similar styles. When the original classic Keds go on sale, it's time to stock up. The Champion Canvas Lace-up Sneakers offer comfort, retro style, and versatility to wear pretty much anywhere, with anything. They feature an ultralow-top design with reliable rubber outsoles and a soft, breathable lining. One pair will last you for years, but we still recommend snagging them in a few different colors—especially when they're on sale for as low as $33. In the market for a tried and true tennis sneaker? The Cole Haan Grand Crosscourts are a worthy option, even more so when they're more than 45 percent off. The stylish sneakers are made with quality materials like rubber and either leather, suede, or nubuck, depending on the style—plus, a specially designed footbed and textile cover provide both comfort and breathability. Superior traction even lets you pivot quickly and effortlessly on the court. There's something about an all-leather sneaker that so effortlessly elevates a more casual look. Take these Reeboks, for example: their low-top design, subtle branding, and supple leather uppers look luxe and truly pull an outfit together. Beyond their stellar appearance, we love added features like a padded collar, OrthoLite sock liner, memory foam insole, and cushioned midsole. Even better? They're 30 percent off. It doesn't get much sleeker than the New Balance CT300 V3 Sneakers. These shoes have a minimalistic design, but they come in clutch in terms of comfort. That's thanks to a C-Cap midsole for padding and support, suede and mesh uppers, and overall quality construction that equals major durability. They're just as cool as they are functional, and you can get them for just $46 right now. These may be the most stylish pair of walking sneakers you'll come across. They come in more than 30 colorways, each featuring a retro trainer-style silhouette and eye-catching, multi-color design. When it comes to construction, we love the supple leather uppers and thick, supportive sole that provides a 1.5-inch lift. 'These are the ultimate travel sneakers,' one shopper writes. 'They give off that designer vibe, but they're lightweight, cushioned, and stylish enough to pair with anything from leggings to slip dresses.' There's nothing like a stylish, slip-on sneaker to motivate you to get active. This pair from Aleader couldn't be more stylish or more lightweight. Our favorite things about the shoes are their uppers—they're stretchy, flexible, and breathable enough to wear without socks if you prefer. They also hug the foot in a just-right way that pushes comfort to the max. We also appreciate the sneakers' odor-reducing properties, moisture-wicking technology, and nearly 50 percent off discount. Skechers sneakers are always a good choice—especially when they're 41 percent off. The Summits sneakers are best-sellers at Amazon, thanks to features like soft, jersey knit uppers, memory foam insoles, shock-absorbing midsoles, and air-cooling technology. These even boast Skechers' exclusive heel pillow, which offers extra cushioning to take pressure off your heels. Naturalizer is known for its comfy, easy-to-wear shoes, and the brand's Morrison Fashion Sneakers expertly merge style and its signature comfort. The slip-ons pair a sporty silhouette with Contour+ technology, meaning you'll always feel as good as you look in these. We also love the 1.25-inch platforms with non-slip outsoles as well as the sneakers' sustainable construction. They come in 21 colors and prints ranging from gray to cheetah, some of which are up to 59 percent off. You know a shoe with 'Chillax' in the name is made for easy, breezy comfort. The Keds slip-ons pair comfy, easy-to-clean twill uppers with a foam footbed and rubber outsole for the ultimate walkable shoe. We also love that they're extra lightweight and easy to wear with anything in your closet. They come in 15 colors, ranging from peach to charcoal, some of which are up to 27 percent off. Looking for something as rugged as its laced counterparts? This heavy-duty slip-on shoe is made for outdoor adventure. Its thick heel features Merrell Air Cushion that stabilizes and absorbs shock, while a molded EVA footframe adds cushion and comfort. The real star, though, may be the leather upper with a pigskin lining that expertly protects the foot and looks good doing so. Grab these now at a 61 percent discount. Mules are always comfy slip-on options, and we love this shoe from Dream Pairs. Built to be seriously supportive and rugged, you'll never miss your non-backless sneakers when you've got these on. Some standout features include a breathable upper, superior arch support, a slip-resistant outsole, and a padded midsole.
