BJP MP Ravi Kishan: ‘Samosa matters to people. Elites don't get rustic humour'
*You raised the issue of standardisation of food items and prices. What was it about?
I come from Gorakhpur, where 98% of voters are poor. Parliament has been not functioning properly due to the ruckus over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
I am an artiste, and hence I am sensitive to people's issues. I have seen poverty, found bad oil in my food while eating out and spoilt my throat. In Europe and America, information like the kind of oil used in the food is mentioned (on the packaging).
*You spoke at length about samosas…
Since I am an artiste, I use humour. Elites do not understand rustic humour. It is an issue that matters to people. I understand that samosa matters to them. Even Rs 10 spent on food matters. I understand this, as in my student days I made Rs 1,300 a month by delivering newspapers.
Though a few people and the Opposition's IT cell are mocking me, I use the language that connects with the people and that is why I win with big margins.
The people who mock me did not see that I also raised issues like drugs or was rooting for inclusion of Bhojpuri in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
*What do you think the size of samosas must be?
People want to know what the food they are eating contains. They want to know what the size or quantity of the food item that they buy is. Be it a dhaba or a five-star hotel, everyone should be accountable. Currently, five dhabas on the same road are selling the same food item at different prices. Ever since my video has gone viral, people from across the country are messaging me with more such problems.
*How did you come up with the idea of raising this issue?
It has been on my mind for a while. I wanted to raise it but was not getting an opportunity during the Zero Hour. The other day, when the Speaker (Om Birla) allowed Zero Hour and allowed around 200 MPs to speak, I got my chance and started speaking. The matter has become an issue of debate now.
*How do you plan to take this forward?
I am from the ruling party so I will not talk openly about what the government must do. I am doing my homework. I will meet the minister concerned and discuss the remedy. It is a matter related to public health.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) officially announced the postponement through a letter (No. 168, dated August 4, 2025) issued by its state office, citing "unavoidable reasons" behind the decision. The party has urged supporters and officials to consider the previous schedule cancelled until a new date is announced. The revised schedule of the yatra will be communicated in due course. Jointly organised by Congress and RJD, the yatra was being projected as a people's movement for voter rights and a direct protest against the controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of the Election Commission. The two opposition parties also planned to use this platform to attack both the Modi government at the Centre and the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar on various election-related issues. Leaders from both parties had termed the yatra as the beginning of their electoral campaign for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. It was designed not only to voice opposition to recent electoral roll deletions under SIR but also to galvanise support and re-energise the Mahagathbandhan cadre ahead of the polls. Party insiders said the announcement of the yatra had already created a buzz within the alliance, with grassroots workers and ticket aspirants gearing up to participate in large numbers. For many local leaders, it was a crucial opportunity to showcase strength and influence in front of top leadership Now, with the program postponed, political attention will shift to the rescheduled dates, which are expected to be strategically aligned with future election planning and regional developments.

A crisis of trust: On the Election Commission of India
The credibility of an electoral system, or democracy in general, is dependent solely on it being seen as fair by all, particularly so by the loser. This is comparable to a judicial dispute or a sporting event on this count. If the losers think they lost only because the process was rigged against them, a crisis of trust develops. The serious charges being raised against the Election Commission of India (ECI) by the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has to be seen in this context. He says that he has plans to disclose more information regarding discrepancies in the 2024 general election. One must wait for the details of those allegations before making any comments on their merits. The ECI has come under attack by politicians earlier too. Narendra Modi, when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, had repeatedly questioned the impartiality of the ECI. Many of these charges against the ECI are rhetorical attempts by political parties or leaders to animate supporters. In Bihar, the Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, has alleged his name did not exist on the draft electoral roll which is being revised by the ECI. As it turns out the Elector's Photo Identity Card (EPIC) number that he thought was his is different from the one in the ECI records, raising a new controversy. Politicians should be raising questions about the electoral process only when there are strong grounds for doing so. Trust in the electoral system is foundational to representative democracy. That said, the ECI's recent statements and actions, far from buttressing public trust and enhancing transparency in the process, raise more questions. Its efficiency and its neutrality are on test in the preparation of rolls, scheduling of elections, enforcement of the code of conduct, counting process, and the redress of complaints. The ECI stands charged on each of these counts. Other than protesting that the electronic voting machines (EVM) are beyond tampering, and that political parties should raise objections regarding rolls at the appropriate time, the ECI has refused to come clean on multiple issues. It has not been transparent about the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machine which is one of the three parts that make an Electronic Voting Machine. Unlike the other two parts — the Ballot Unit and the Control Unit — the VVPAT has software that is centrally installed and it is connected to the control unit. The random tallying of the VVPAT with the electronically cast votes is now an extremely arbitrary process. All political parties do not have the equal capacity to monitor the various stages of the electoral process. At any rate, the election process is not a matter of negotiation between parties and the ECI. Political parties have a role to play, but the real question is to ensure that the citizenry at large is reassured of the integrity of the electoral process. The ECI needs to correct its course to ensure that.

Deesa fire tragedy: Kin move SC, seek Rs 2 crore compensation per victim, probe outside Gujarat
The family members of the April 1 Deesa fire tragedy — during which at least 21 workers, including seven children, were killed and six others were injured after a blast, involving a massive blaze, destroyed a firecracker warehouse — have moved the Supreme Court seeking a compensation of Rs 2 crore per victim and also directions to transfer the case probe to police officers from outside Gujarat. While moving the top court, the victims' kin mentioned the infringement of Article 21 of the Constitution of India, which guarantees 'protection of life and personal liberty'. The Supreme Court has issued notice to the respondents, including the Chief Secretary of Gujarat, returnable on September 26. The Supreme Court Division Bench of Justice Surya Kant, Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh issued the notice to the respondents on July 31, after admitting the petition filed by Chandar Singh Nayak, from Madhya Pradesh's Devas village, who works as a labourer in Ahmedabad, and has lost six family members in the tragedy. The State of Gujarat, through the Chief Secretary as well as the Home Secretary as well as the Regional Fire Officer of Gandhinagar, District Collector of Banaskantha and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Deesa are respondents to Nayak's petition before the SC. On April 1, when a fire broke out in the illegal firecracker manufacturing facility, comprising six warehouses in Deesa, Nayak lost his daughter, son-in-law, siblings of son-in-law, and mother-in-law of his deceased daughter in the incident. In his petition, filed through Advocate Utkarsh Dave, Nayak has informed the court that the firecracker warehouse ran without proper licensing, sale permissions, fire safety equipment and regulatory insights. 'A majority of the deceased migrant workers, who were brought by the warehouse owners from the neighbouring state of Madhya Pradesh, worked in the firecracker factory without any formal contract, with no or minimal safety measures and equipment,' the petition states, enlisting four similar incidents that have occurred in Gujarat since 2023, including the April 20, 2023 blaze in a firecracker factory in Aravalli, in which four labourers were killed as well as a fire in Bapunagar godown storing firecrackers without permission in Ahmedabad on May 10, 2023, that caused injuries to some persons. The petition also lists the death of two persons in a blast in a firecracker factory in Ahmedabad's Vanch on April 21, 2024 that killed two as well as the May 25, 2024 Rajkot TRP gaming zone fire. 'Several persons lost their lives and many others suffered serious injuries to their person and property in these incidents due to the repeated failure of the State authorities who failed to keep a check on these illegal activities and, therefore, are jointly and severally liable to pay compensation to the kin of the victims and injured persons… In such cases, the state must see that the victims do not remain in the constant state of suffering and despair…' the petition states. Seeking a higher compensation of Rs 2 crore each for the families of the deceased victims and Rs 50 lakh to the injured victims, the petition states, 'It is submitted that the Central Government and the State Governments of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh announced paltry compensation amounts of Rs 2 lakh, Rs 4 lakh, and Rs 2 lakh respectively to the next of kin of the deceased persons and Rs 50,000/- each for the injured by overlooking the fact that a majority of the victims were the sole bread earners of their respective families…' The petition seeks 'directions' for the state government to 'immediately locate and carry out an inspection of all the firecracker manufacturing units in the State of Gujarat in respect of compliance with applicable fire safety norms' under prevailing laws.' Advocate Dave said that the petition seeks investigation into the role of the state officials, who have 'shown extreme administrative lethargy and even complicity despite judicial interventions'. Dave said, 'Gujarat has seen several tragedies in the past that have caused loss of lives due to negligence of authorities and repeated failure of the officials working in state government. Our petition is seeking that the amount of compensation should be enhanced, which can bring a life of dignity to the kin of the victims, if not closure in the matter… In the specific case of Deesa, we have sought that the investigation should be conducted by officers from outside the state of Gujarat so that the state government officers responsible for the tragedy are not given scope to escape the law. A total of 21 people had lost their lives in the tragedy. The warehouse owners were illegally manufacturing fireworks in the said premises. An FIR was lodged in the case in Deesa Rural police station.
