The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has witnessed a sharp rise in the number of schools offering Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a subject. In just five years, the subject has moved from being a small pilot initiative to becoming a noteworthy part of school to the latest data presented in the Rajya Sabha, CBSE-affiliated schools teaching AI in Class 9 rose from just 235 in 2019-20 to 4,543 in an increase of over 1,800%. For Class 11, the number of schools jumped from 80 in 2020-21 to 944 in the current academic year, an increase of over 1,000%. The union minister of state for education, Jayant Chaudhary, shared these figures in response to a question by BJP MP Sujeet minister said that CBSE introduced AI as an optional skill subject in Class 9 in 2019 and in Class 11 a year IN CLASSROOMS: FROM BUZZWORD TO MAINSTREAM LEARNINGThe curriculum was developed with the support of experts from companies such as Intel and IBM, alongside higher education just the number of schools, but the number of students choosing AI has also grown significantly. In Class 9, student enrolment went from 15,645 in 2019-20 to 4,69,454 in 2024-25 -- a jump of 2,900%.In Class 11, student numbers rose from 2,048 in 2020-21 to 33,933 this say that students and schools are becoming more open to adopting technology-focused note that AI is no longer seen as a niche skill, but one that is fast becoming essential in today's learning early introduction of such subjects is seen as a way to equip students for future job 2020 and 2024, CBSE also held seven events focused on technology and innovation.
