PEMADAM targets synthetic drugs among educated youth in Malaysia
This focus will take centre stage at the 46th PEMADAM Biennial National Assembly from Aug 9 to 11 at the Perbadanan Putrajaya Complex. The event aims to enhance prevention strategies and engage more young leaders and academics in PEMADAM's leadership.
'PEMADAM must adapt to current challenges. Synthetic drugs are cheap, easily accessible and increasingly popular among youth aged 15 to 30, including those with higher education,' he said during a press conference before chairing PEMADAM's National Executive Committee meeting.
Recent field visits to Kelantan, Penang, and Sabah, conducted with the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), revealed a worrying trend. Studies indicate drug users now include highly educated individuals, some with PhDs, particularly in the East Coast region.
'This shows traffickers are targeting high-potential groups who could otherwise contribute to national development,' Dr Shamsul Anuar added.
The assembly, expected to be officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, will feature exhibitions from AADK, the Prison Department, and the Serenti Rehabilitation Centre (PUSPEN). Special sessions will highlight the latest synthetic drug trends and traffickers' evolving tactics. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court here has acquitted and discharged two Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers and a former officer of gang robbery, without calling for their defence.. Judge Izralizam Sanusi ordered Muhamad Haffiz Mohd Radzi, 35, Mohd Fahmee Mohamad Nor, 43, and former officer Azwan Asli, 40, to be freed on Monday (Aug 4) after finding that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against them. In his judgment, he said the court took into account a police report lodged by the victim, who was the first prosecution witness (SP1), stating that the presence of three men at his house was related to an investigation into alleged money laundering offences. "However, the court found that this did not amount to wrongful restraint, as the actions were carried out in the capacity of MACC officers," he said. Judge Izralizam said that based on the victim's testimony, he did not feel afraid of the three accused during the incident, as he claimed he had not committed any offence. "There is no evidence that the victim was threatened with a firearm by the three men, even though he alleged that one of them was carrying a firearm in his backpack,' said the judge, adding that the existence of the alleged firearm was not proven during the trial. ALSO READ: Two MACC officers, one other charged with robbery On Dec 13, 2023, the three accused were charged with jointly committing gang robbery against a man named Kun Gao, allegedly robbing him of cash, a silver suitcase, and a black Louis Vuitton bag. The offence was said to have been committed at a condominium on Jalan Ampang at about noon on Dec 10, 2021. The charge, framed under Section 395 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment and whipping upon conviction. Kelantan ranks third for drug addiction in Malaysia with 11,280 cases
KOTA BHARU: Kelantan has recorded 11,280 drug addicts and abusers as of March 2025, marking it as the state with the third-highest rate of drug addiction in Malaysia. The National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) reported 597 cases per 100,000 population, trailing behind Terengganu (663) and Perlis (609). AADK director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh noted a 5.4% decline compared to the previous year, attributing the improvement to integrated efforts such as enforcement crackdowns, preventive education, and tighter border controls. 'The closure of illegal entry points has helped curb the flow of prohibited substances,' he said after attending the State Drug Control Action Council Meeting. Amphetamine-Type Stimulants (ATS) accounted for 89.3% of cases (10,071 individuals), followed by opiates (6.8%), psychotropic pills (2.5%), and cannabis (0.4%). Ruslin emphasized ongoing collaboration with police, immigration, and customs to enhance prevention and rehabilitation programmes. - Bernama
