Emergency Call Boxes installed across Agra for quick crisis response
A total of 43 'Emergency Call Boxes' have been installed across the city by Agra Nagar Nigam (ANN).
'The idea is to provide immediate assistance not just to locals but also to the tourists visiting Agra. The integrated command and control system alerts the concerned agency—be it the police, traffic police, health services, ambulance, or fire department,' said Ankit Khandelwal, municipal commissioner, Agra.
'There was scope of improvement when these Emergency Call Boxes were initially installed, and they have now become increasingly beneficial for users. The number of these boxes might be increased—particularly in areas vulnerable in terms of women's safety, at tourism hotspots, and near schools and colleges—depending on their utility,' said Khandelwal.
'We are committed to enhancing the technological infrastructure envisioned under the Smart City project—not only to strengthen administrative support but also to ensure the safety and security of residents and tourists visiting the city,' he added.
Recently, a resident of Nirbhay Nagar on Mau road in Agra used the Emergency Call Box facility when he was being assaulted and harassed by his sons. Upon receiving the alert, the police were immediately informed and provided timely assistance.
In another instance, a man stuck in a traffic jam on Collectorate road pressed the 'Help' button, prompting a quick response from the traffic police. In a separate incident, a couple involved in a domestic dispute were pacified by police who reached the spot after an alert citizen reported the issue to using the facility. Even in the case of a dead body found in a remote location, a local resident used the facility to inform authorities, ensuring swift action.
Officials at Nagar Nigam plan to introduce a multilingual feature to the system, which currently operates through location tracking and CCTV integration. The entire mechanism is monitored live by the integrated command and control centre located at the Smart City project hub within the Nagar Nigam premises.

Unsafe UP school transport: 913 vehicles seized, ₹88.5 lakh in fines realised
In a push to ensure the safety of school-going children, the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department has seized 913 school vehicles and collected ₹88.52 lakh in penalties following a massive statewide enforcement drive, a government spokesman said here on Wednesday. The inspection revealed that 4,089 vehicles (8.75%) violated safety norms, with 1,768 found operating despite expired fitness certificates. In all, 4,438 challans were issued as part of the crackdown. Transport commissioner Brajesh Narain Singh has issued strict directives to all districts and school managements, warning of 'zero tolerance' for any negligence in school vehicle operations. He emphasised that any failure to comply with safety standards would attract severe legal, criminal, and administrative consequences, including the cancellation of school recognition in case of repeated violations. While districts such as Prayagraj, Farrukhabad, Lucknow, and Kanpur Nagar performed well in enforcement, serious lapses were noted in Mau, Maharajganj, Deoria, Hapur, and Siddharthnagar. Key violations uncovered during the drive included, operation of vehicles with expired fitness certificates, use of privately registered vehicles (Maruti vans, taxis, autos) without valid permits, absence of mandatory safety gear such as GPS, CCTV, fire extinguishers, and first-aid kits and lack of police verification, training, and medical check-ups of drivers and attendants, denial of affiliation by schools despite private vehicles operating from their premises. The transport commissioner, as chairman of the State Transport Authority, has invoked powers under Section 68(4) of the Motor Vehicles Act, directing Regional Transport Authorities (RTAs) to seize unpermitted private vehicles and prohibit the use of unfit ones. District magistrates have been asked to initiate derecognition proceedings against erring schools and activate regular meetings of District School Vehicle Transport Safety Committees. RTAs and ARTOs have been instructed to carry out regular inspections and ensure strict compliance, including police verification of all drivers and attendants. School principals and managements of institutions have been reminded of their legal responsibility for every vehicle operating from their campuses and directed to form mandatory School Transport Safety Committees. Reaffirming the department's stance, transport commissioner Singh said, 'There will be zero tolerance for negligence or violation in the operation of school vehicles. The safety of children is our absolute priority. Stringent legal actions will be taken against those violating the rules.'

Ludhiana: Man kills neighbour over wife's suspected affair
A 45-year-old man brutally murdered his neighbour in Makkar Colony, Giaspura area of Sahnewal, on Tuesday late. The accused, Shiv Sagar, allegedly stabbed his neighbour, Nand Lal, multiple times in the face and neck while he was asleep, suspecting him of having an affair with his wife. Following the murder, Shiv Sagar reportedly fled the scene with his wife and children, packing their belongings in haste. Other residents of the labour quarter noticed their hurried departure and alerted the landlord. When they later checked on Nand Lal, they found his lifeless body in a pool of blood. The landlord, along with local residents, immediately launched a search and rushed to Ludhiana railway station, suspecting the family was attempting to flee to their native village in Uttar Pradesh. According to eyewitnesses, the residents managed to intercept and apprehend Shiv Sagar at the station and handed him over to the police. According to police, tension had been simmering between the two men after Shiv Sagar grew suspicious of Nand Lal's interactions with his wife. Though an earlier altercation had taken place between them over the same issue, it was believed to have been resolved. However, police say that on Tuesday night, driven by suspicion and rage, Shiv Sagar barged into Nand Lal's room and stabbed him repeatedly while he was fast asleep. Inspector Jagdev Singh Dhaliwal, station house officer (SHO) of Sahnewal police station, said, 'Shiv Sagar suspected that Nand Lal was having an illicit relationship with his wife. They had entered into an altercation earlier also. On Tuesday night, Shiv Sagar attacked Nand Lal while he was sleeping, inflicting fatal injuries to his face and neck. Nand Lal died on the spot.' Though Sahnewal police have registered an FIR under Section 103 (murder) of BNS against Shiv Sagar, they have not officially confirmed his arrest as of the time of reporting. Meanwhile, Nand Lal's body has been sent for postmortem, and further investigations are underway.

Ludhiana: 6 held for lobbing petrol bomb at realtor's house
In a shocking revelation that underscores the international links of local gang violence, the Dakha police have unearthed a conspiracy to eliminate a Ludhiana-based realtor, allegedly orchestrated by a gangster currently hiding in the United States. The case pertains to a recent petrol bomb and gunfire attack at the house of Yadwinder Singh alias Yadi in Village Baddowal, carried out in the early hours of July 10. The six accused in police custody in Ludhiana on Tuesday. (HT Photo) According to police, six assailants have been arrested in connection with the case, while six others—some with serious criminal backgrounds—are still absconding. The arrested accused include - Harshpreet Singh Bhullar alias Harsh of Deep Nagar of Patiala, Dhruv Thakur of Jagdish Colony Patiala, Ekjot Singh of Adarsh Colony of Bhadson Road of Patiala, Gurinder Brar alias Guriof Nihal Singh Wala of Moga, Baljinder Singh of Bhamma Landa village of Moga and Amrik Singh of Jawahar Singh Wala village of Ferozepur. The Police have recovered two vehicles used in the crime, along with petrol bombs. Matter stems from a property dispute: Cops Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Dakha Varinder Singh Khosa, confirmed that the crime was not a random act but a carefully plotted assault, stemming from a land dispute between Yadwinder Singh and one Dildar Singh, a resident of Jainpur village. The latter allegedly reached out to an infamous gangster Kunwarveer Singh—currently hiding in the US—to arrange the attack. 'This case exposes how local land disputes are now being escalated into full-blown international criminal conspiracies,' said DSP Khosa. 'Dildar Singh contacted Kunwarveer Singh in the US, who in turn recruited assailants including Harshpreet Bhullar, Sahil Malhotra, Sahil alias Matru, and Riaz to execute the attack.' The attack was executed with alarming precision. On the intervening night of July 9 and 10, the accused hurled a petrol bomb at Yadwinder Singh's residence in Baddowal. As the victim came out to investigate, the attackers opened fire. Although Yadwinder miraculously escaped. The attackers filmed the entire act on their mobile phones before fleeing the scene. Six accused still on the run According to police, the assailants used a stolen Hyundai i20 for the attack. The vehicle was procured by Ekjot Singh and was under his possession for 15 days prior to the incident. After executing the plan, the gang abandoned the car near a petrol pump in a bid to mislead the police. The vehicle was then moved by another accused, Dhruv Thakur, along with an accomplice identified as Jazzy. Later, three others—Gurinder Brar, Baljinder Singh, and Amrik Singh—picked up the shooters in a Mahindra Scorpio and provided them with shelter. Among the accused still on the run are Dildar Singh, proclaimed offender and US-based gangster Kunwarveer Singh, Sahil Malhotra, Sahil alias Matru, Riaz from Patiala, and Jazzy. The DSP confirmed that the FIR, originally lodged under sections 125 (acts that endanger human life or personal safety due to rashness or negligence) and 326 (offense of mischief by injury, inundation, fire, or explosive substance) of the BNS, sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act, has now been expanded with the inclusion of additional sections 109 (attempt to murder), 249 (offence of harbouring an offender), 3 (5) (common intention) of BNS. 'This is not just a local crime. The involvement of a gangster sitting in the US raises serious questions about the extent of foreign influence on Punjab's gangland activities. We are coordinating with higher authorities and cyber units to trace communications and financial links involved in this attack,' Khosa added.
