More Weed Killing Hacks
An expert from Moral Fibres revealed that another budget friendly way to kill weeds is to add three teaspoons of washing liquid to a vinegar and salt solution and pour this on the unwanted plants.
My non-toxic weed killer is made with 3 ingredients you already have at home
According to the expert, the homemade weed killer 'works indiscriminately on all plant life and can turn your soil acidic'.
"My main tip is that this homemade weed killer recipe works best on a dry sunny day," they continued.
"I'd suggest applying it at midday, or just before, when the sun is at its peak. It really helps to dry out the weeds."
According to the experts at House Digest, a £2 product can be used on patio weeds that will cause them to weaken and die fast.
Why you shouldn't use fizzy drinks as a weed killer
THE internet is full of gardening hacks - some incredibly useful, and others just downright stupid.
Fabulous' Associate Editor and gardening enthusiast, Rebecca Miller, has shared her thoughts.
"The latest suggestion is to use fizzy drinks as a weed killer - but this will cause more harm than good.
Fizzy drinks contain acidic ingredients which, yes, will effectively kill weeds - but also any other plant it touches.
More importantly, it will impact your soil quality because of the artificial sugar content.
While this may not seem like a bad thing because plants need sugar to survive, the issue is, the sugar in fizzy drinks, is the wrong type of sugar plants need, and it cannot be absorbed by them.
Instead, the plant which has been covered in soda will pull water from the roots of surrounding plants, causing them all to become hydrated.
So yes, you might kill a weed or two, but you'll also see a lot of your other plants and flowers dying.
To add to this, the microbes and underground critters that like the sugars found in fizzy drinks, are often not good for plants - and some of them can be actively harmful.
If you have pesky weeds, the old fashioned way is the best. Get a kitchen knife, a weed puller or brush and remove them by hand.
But remember - a weed is just a plant growing in a location you don't want it to."
The gardening gurus stressed that rubbing alcohol - a very powerful disinfectant which you'll find from just £2 on Amazon - can serve as an excellent way to get rid of weeds for good.
However, green-fingered gardeners should note that rubbing alcohol should only be used on patio weeds and not around any other plants, for a very important reason.
The experts explained: "The challenge with most weed killers, including rubbing alcohol, is their non-selective nature.
'This means they don't just target weeds; they can also harm other vegetation, such as your beloved plants and lawn grass."
So if you want to ensure your other plants don't get harmed in the process, using it in between your paving stones - where you've likely not got any other plants or grass growing - is the best way to go, as there's less risk of contamination.

Millions of Brits still can't swim – and a third don't feel confident in the water, survey shows

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) NEARLY nine million British adults are still unable to swim, according to shocking new research. A study of 2,000 adults found 17 per cent have no swimming ability whatsoever, 33 per cent don't feel confident in the water, and 42 per cent will only brave the shallow end. Others were put off by a bad experience, or didn't see swimming as important when they were growing up. The research was commissioned by EasyJet, as part of an initiative that offers free swimming lessons to 1,000 adults across the UK ahead of the summer holidays. The programme has been developed in partnership with Triple Olympic Champion Tom Dean, national swim provider Better, and the Royal Life Saving Society UK. Tom Dean, who has spoken to Parliament about water safety, said: 'As an Olympic swimmer, I know the importance of learning water safety skills and am passionate about ensuring everyone across Britain has access to basic swimming competencies. 'Whether it's staying with a buddy, knowing your limits, or sticking to areas where you can stand, it's never too late to learn how to swim.' The research also revealed that 17 per cent of Brits grew up without a local pool. More than 100 public pools have closed across the UK in the past 20 years – with the average pool now 4.3 miles from people's homes. For five per cent, the nearest pool is more than 10 miles away. Of these, 20 per cent say they don't have the time, 15 per cent cite high costs, and 13 per cent believe swimming is too risky. Despite this, 31 per cent of parents worry about their children swimming on holiday because they can't swim themselves. A further 32 per cent fear they wouldn't be able to help if something went wrong, and 18 per cent wish they could join their children or grandchildren in the pool – but can't. Meanwhile, 25 per cent say their lack of swimming ability affects how much they enjoy their holidays. Nearly one in five are too scared to get in the pool at all, and 11 per cent have avoided beach holidays altogether because of it. But now, 35 per cent of non-swimmers would take lessons as adults if given the chance – with 23 per cent admitting their lack of ability makes them feel vulnerable. At least 4 dead and dozens missing as ferry sinks off coast of holiday hotspot Bali sparking rescue mission

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A FERRY carrying 65 people has sunk off the coast of Bali, leaving at least four confirmed dead and dozens still missing. The vessel, KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, was travelling from Ketapang Port in East Java to Gilimanuk Port in Bali when disaster struck. It is believed the vessel suffered a critical leak in the engine room, causing a total power failure before capsizing. The ferry was carrying 53 passengers and 12 crew members. So far, 29 people have been rescued—many found unconscious after drifting in rough seas for hours. The Surabaya Search and Rescue Agency said: 'Another four people died and 23 have been rescued.' That leaves at least 32 still unaccounted for. Search efforts have been underway since Wednesday night, with nine boats scouring the area. Rescuers are battling waves up to two metres high. The ferry had only just left East Java when it sank, less than 30 minutes into the 31-mile journey, CNN reports. The boat was also carrying 22 vehicles, including 14 trucks. Its route is one of Indonesia's busiest and frequently used by locals and freight operators. President Prabowo Subianto, currently on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, has ordered an emergency response. Authorities are investigating what went wrong—and whether more people were aboard than officially recorded. Ferry disasters are tragically common in Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago of more than 17,000 islands where safety lapses are frequent. Just last month, another vessel capsized near Nusa Lembongan but all passengers survived. The Bali Strait crossing had been closed last week due to high waves, and two other ships were recently swept off course and ran aground. Elsewhere in Indonesia, dozens more flights to tourist hotspots were cancelled after a massive ash cloud exploded from a volcano in the island of Flores. Mount Lweotobi Laki-laki was seen spewing plumes of ash more than 11km into the sky on Tuesday - sparking fears of an impending tsunami. Authorities raised the highest red alert and residents have been urged to avoid activities within a 7km radius around the crater. Multiple airlines have since delayed or cancelled flights to and from Bali, the popular holiday destination west of Flores. These include Air India, Air New Zealand, Jetstar, Juneyao Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Virgin Australia. Bali's Gusti Ngurah rai International Airport showed that almost 40 flights were cancelled due to the explosion. More to follow...
