Tawau emerging as a leading durian district

TAWAU: The growing demand for durian in both domestic and international markets is fuelling the expansion of new plantations in Tawau, reaffirming the district's position as a key durian producer in Sabah's East Coast region. According to the Sabah Agriculture Department, under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development initiative, Tawau is expected to see the addition of 100 hectares of durian cultivation this year, primarily driven by private sector investment. Another 40 acres are projected to be developed by smallholders.
Advertisement Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, said the expansion would add to the district's current 336 hectares of durian plantations, largely concentrated in Apas, Balung, and Merotai. 'Tawau remains the leading durian-producing district on the East Coast, and there's still room for expansion, especially to meet export market demand,' he said during the Durian Crop Technology Transformation Course held at Dewan Sri Tawau, recently. Nizam encouraged farmers and rural communities in the district to seize the opportunity to venture into durian cultivation using modern agricultural techniques, with support and guidance from the Agriculture Department. He also urged industry players to ensure their produce meets quality and safety standards by adopting Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) or organic farming methods, which can lead to certifications such as myGAP or myOrganic. 'We must ensure that our durian produce is safe for consumption and of high quality. 'This includes using certified planting materials and participating in training courses organised by the department, such as those that help farmers identify genuine durian seedlings,' he said. He emphasised that authenticity and quality assurance would play a crucial role in enhancing the competitiveness of Sabah's durian in premium markets. Also present were Sabah Agriculture Director Datuk Jifrin Mohamad, Assistant Director of the Crop Industry Development and Extension Division Jackson Ronald Jaimi, and Assistant Director of Research and Innovation ChM Alinah Abdul Rahman. TNB facing RM5 billion tax bill after Federal Court ruling

PETALING JAYA: National utility company Tenaga Nasional Bhd is facing a RM5.05 billion tax bill following a Federal Court rulIng that it is not eligible to claim reinvestment allowance. Citing TNB's 2024 annual report, The Edge reported today that the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) issued the company RM9.25 billion in additional tax assessments. Advertisement However, RM2.44 billion in penalties was waived through settlements. 'TNB paid RM1.76 billion in December 2020, leaving an estimated RM5.05 billion still outstanding,' the report by the financial portal added. Yesterday, it was reported that TNB's shares plunged a day after the Federal Court overturned a ruling in the largest corporate tax dispute in the country's history, resulting in losses of over RM3 billion in its market capitalisation. Its shares fell as much as 74 sen, or over 5%, to its lowest level since June 3, with the counter closing at RM14.02. On Wednesday the apex court overturned a Court of Appeal ruling that found the national utility company to be in the business of manufacturing electricity. It said TNB should actually have been considered a utility company under Schedule 7B of the Income Tax Act 1967 (ITA). The dispute arose when LHDN disallowed TNB's claim under Schedule 7A of the ITA on the basis that the generation, distribution and transmission of electricity did not constitute manufacturing of electricity. TNB had also argued that it was only a service provider. In 2022, the High Court allowed TNB's judicial review application to set aside LHDN's RM1.8 billion tax assessment for the year 2018. Two years later, the Court of Appeal upheld the High Court's ruling. Sabah launches utility corridor to drive strategic infrastructure growth

KOTA KINABALU (July 4): The State Government has taken a bold step to strengthen infrastructure delivery in Sabah with the official launch of the Sabah Utility Corridor (KUS), a strategic initiative aimed at catalysing systemic development across the state. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said the establishment of KUS is not merely the creation of a new entity, but a strong reflection of the government's commitment to fast-track development, streamline utility coordination and attract fresh investments into Sabah. 'KUS has been mandated to function as a one-stop agency to expedite utility work permit processes and develop a comprehensive state-wide utility asset database,' he said in his keynote address delivered by Datuk Abidin Madingkir, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, at the official launch at Marriott Hotel on Friday. He noted that this initiative aligns with the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan, which prioritises inclusive development and the delivery of services that are efficient, transparent and future-ready. With the integration of digital technology and a unified utility mapping system under KUS, Hajiji said project approvals will be accelerated, overlapping of work can be reduced, and field safety will be enhanced. 'This approach will have a significant impact not just on the smooth execution of government and private sector projects, but also supports Sabah's digitalisation agenda, investment competitiveness and smart city development,' he said. He added that this is a clear example of how public-private sector synergy can yield high-impact solutions for the people. Hajiji also emphasised that improved coordination of utility processes would unlock more areas for development, which in turn would stimulate economic activities and create employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas. 'Projects like this will reinforce industrial logistics and expand access to basic amenities such as electricity, clean water and telecommunications for our rural communities,' he added. Hajiji also called on all staff of KUSSB and Qhazanah Sabah Berhad to carry out their duties with professionalism and unwavering commitment, ensuring the corridor brings real benefits to the people. 'We've laid a solid foundation. Now is the time to execute it with courage and conviction,' he stressed.

Sabah, Kazakhstan explore tourism, investment ties
