Indo cooperation against drug smuggling
Published on: Friday, June 27, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 27, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Jasmin also called on the public not to be quick to point fingers at the authorities when crimes occur, but instead play a role as the 'eyes and ears' of the enforcement agencies. TAWAU: The cooperation network between Malaysian and Indonesian police along the border of both countries in combating drug smuggling activities has never declined – instead, it continues to be strengthened. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the initiative is in line with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) top leadership commitment to enhancing ties with law enforcement authorities in neighbouring countries. 'We have already held two meetings between the Sabah Police Commissioner and the Police Chief for North Kalimantan (Kapolda),' he said. Jasmin added that his team also maintains close ties with the Republic of Indonesia Consulate (KRI) in Tawau, particularly in sharing information related to drug seizure and arrest cases. According to him, the cooperation established between the police forces of both countries has been effective, including in the investigation of criminal suspects and suspicious activities. On concerns about drug smuggling into neighbouring countries, which may tarnish Malaysia's image, he said all enforcement agencies, including the police, remain fully committed to upholding the law. 'This includes situations that happen right before our eyes, involving collaboration with relevant agencies such as the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, the Immigration Department and the Domestic Trade and Costs of Living Ministry. 'There have actually been many successful drug seizure and arrest cases in Tawau, although not all are disclosed to the media or public,' he said. He explained that not all operations, arrests or seizures can be shared publicly as they must first go through a proper investigation process. He is optimistic that the more than 50 per cent drop in the crime index compared to last year is a key indicator of law enforcement effectiveness in Tawau. 'In the context of enforcement, community support is vital to maintaining peace and public safety, as security forces cannot act alone. 'So, we urge all public members to support investigations and operations, particularly by sharing credible information,' he said. Jasmin also called on the public not to be quick to point fingers at the authorities when crimes occur, but instead play a role as the 'eyes and ears' of the enforcement agencies. He said the Government now offers various platforms for discreet information sharing, including the Volunteer Smart Petrol app, where identities are kept confidential. 'Specifically in Tawau, if anyone is found to be involved in drug distribution, rest assured that action will be taken – regardless of the individual or network involved,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Skipper, assistant held for carrying rice, cooking oil
Published on: Thursday, June 26, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 26, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Enforcement officer guarding the boat skipper and seized goods. TAWAU: A cargo boat was found carrying seven tonnes of rice and 510 kilogrammes of subsidised cooking oil without authorisation to Sebatik Island. The skipper was detained by a team from the Tawau Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Maritim Malaysia) at 0.75 nautical miles south of Kuala Sungai Tawau on Tuesday. Tawau Maritime Zone Director Captain (M) Ariffin Ghazali said the total value of the seized items, including the cargo boat and engine, is estimated about RM30,000. 'The arrest was conducted through Operations Pluto Timur, Sejahtera and Tiris. The boat was spotted in a suspicious manner from Batu Tiga Jalan Apas waters heading towards Sebatik. 'Our team found 700 sacks of rice (10kg each) and 30 boxes of packaged cooking oil during a search of the cargo boat,' he said here Wednesday. Ariffin added that the discovery led to the arrest of the 20-year-old male skipper who was steering the boat, along with his 25-year-old male assistant. The captain's identification documents were found to be suspicious and the suspect also lacked the necessary permit and customs clearance documents to transport goods to Sebatik. 'Further investigations revealed that the assistant was a passport holder from a neighbouring country who did not possess any valid work permit to work on the boat,' he said. Both suspects, along with the seized goods, including the cargo boat, were subsequently taken to Tawau Maritime Zone Jetty for examination and further investigations. He said investigations would also consider the possibility of smuggling, especially in light of several viral video clips related to the seizure of Malaysian goods in neighbouring countries. 'The investigation is being conducted under the Control of Supplies Act 1961, the Padi and Rice Control Act 1994 (Act 522), the Customs Act 1967, the Immigration Act 1959/63 and the Sabah Ports and Harbours Docks Enactment 2002,' he said. He added that enforcement efforts to combat illegal activities would continue to be intensified across the East Sabah Security Zone (Esszone). Ariffin also said that Maritime Malaysia is committed to strengthening cooperation with other agencies to ensure that compliance with national laws remains a priority. 'We also welcome information regarding any suspected criminal activity around Tawau waters to be reported to the Tawau Maritime Zone Operations Centre at 089-752116.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Foreigner with 3kg syabu held in Tawau
Published on: Thursday, June 26, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 26, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: ACP Jasmin Hussin said the arrest was made around 3.30pm on Friday at the entrance area to Indrasabah Fishing Paradise. TAWAU: Police arrested a 30-year-old fisherman suspected of carrying more than 3kg of syabu worth about RM105,000 at Indrasabah. The foreigner, who tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine, is believed to be a drug transporter attempting to smuggle the substance to a neighbouring country. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the arrest was made around 3.30pm on Friday at the entrance area to Indrasabah Fishing Paradise. 'The man tried to flee when approached and threw a grey bag to the ground before being apprehended,' he told a media conference at the Tawau District Police Headquarters, Wednesday. The syabu, weighing 3,085.54 grammes, was discovered after examination of green tea packages. 'Investigation to identify the drug syndicate network and the suspect's modus operandi for transporting syabu to neighbouring countries is ongoing,' Jasmin said. Asked about the potential use of local fishing boats as secret transportation for drug smuggling, he did not rule out the possibility. However, police are also considering the likelihood of speedboats being used to cross borders and enter Indonesian waters within short periods. 'Preliminary investigations conducted so far also indicate that the suspect received drug supplies from local suppliers rather than from neighbouring Philippines,' he added. The public has been urged to continuously provide information regarding drug possession, distribution and substance abuse activities as part of joint commitment with police in efforts to combat such activities. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah dismisses election rift rumours
Published on: Tuesday, June 17, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 17, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Nizam expressed confidence that such a scenario is unlikely, given the strong commitment and cooperation among the component parties within GRS and its ally, Pakatan Harapan (PH). TAWAU: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Information Chief Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan has dismissed speculation that component parties within the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition will inevitably clash during the upcoming 17th State Election (PRN). Nizam, who is also Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, expressed confidence that such a scenario is unlikely, given the strong commitment and cooperation among the component parties within GRS and its ally, Pakatan Harapan (PH). Advertisement 'We've seen the state government under the GRS-PH administration deliver many positive results in terms of Sabah's progress and development, including protecting the welfare of the people,' he said during a visit to Kampung Kinabutan Bukit here on Sunday. 'I believe there will be no clashes among GRS component parties and no conflict with PH either,' he added. When asked about the potential of a clash between GRS and Barisan Nasional (BN), particularly Umno, in the upcoming election, Nizam said it would be up to BN to decide. The Apas assemblyman stressed that GRS's main focus is on strengthening the current unity government, which centres on cooperation, understanding, and mutual trust between GRS and PH. He revealed that this intention has already been informally communicated to the PH leadership in Sabah and to the Prime Minister, while also affirming that PGRS does not deny other parties the right to explore collaboration. 'Today's state government is formed through cooperation between GRS and PH, so naturally, our priority is to ensure the next government remains within that framework,' he said. Commenting further, Nizam said any party seeking to collaborate must understand that the priority for forming partnerships will lie with GRS and PH. As PGRS Zone 12 Coordinator (covering Tawau and Kalabakan divisions), Nizam also confirmed that the party has submitted the names of its potential candidates for the state election. 'We've requested all seven seats—Apas, Balung and Sri Tanjung under Tawau; and Merotai, Sebatik, Tanjung Batu, and Kukusan under Kalabakan. 'Ultimately, the decision lies with the PGRS leadership, but certainly, we aim to defend the three seats we currently hold—Apas, Balung, and Sebatik,' he said. On May 11, Prime Minister and PH Chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when met in Tawau, expressed optimism that a collaboration between PH, BN, and GRS could be established to face the 17th state election. However, he clarified that he could only speak on behalf of PH and would leave further discussions on the tripartite collaboration to BN and GRS. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
