Gunman kills four people in New York office building shooting before taking his life

A man carrying a rifle killed four people, including an off-duty police officer, in a New York office building that houses some of the country's top financial firms and the National Football League (NFL), officials said.
Police identified the gunman as Shane Tamura, of Las Vegas, and said he also wounded a fifth person before taking his own life.
He had a "documented mental health history", but the motive was still unknown, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference.
"We are working to understand why he targeted this particular location," she said.
The officer who was killed was a 36-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh and had served as a police officer in New York City for three and a half years.
"He died as he lived. A hero," Ms Tisch said.
Mayor Eric Adams said the man who was injured remained in a critical condition.
He added that officials were still "unravelling" what took place.
"Five innocent people were shot," he said.
Surveillance video showed a man exiting a double-parked BMW with an M4 rifle before he walked toward the building.
He immediately opened fire on the NYPD officer as he entered the building, shot a woman who tried to take cover, then began "spraying" the lobby with gunfire, Commissioner Tisch said.
The man then made his way to the elevator bank and shot a security guard who was taking cover behind a security desk, and another man in the lobby, the commissioner said.
Officers found a rifle case, a revolver, magazines and ammunition in his car, she added.
The Fire Department of New York said emergency crews were called to the Park Avenue office building following a report someone had been shot.
A spokesperson said the call came in at about 6:30pm on Monday, local time, but provided no other details.
Jessica Chen told ABC News US she was watching a presentation with dozens of other people on the second floor when she "heard multiple shots go off in quick succession from the first floor".
She and others ran into a conference room and barricaded tables against the door.
"We were honestly really, really scared," she said, adding that she texted her parents to tell them that she loved them.
Mayor Adams posted a clip to social media urging people still inside the office building to stay put because police officers were conducting a floor-by-floor search.
The Democrat said he was headed to the hospital to speak with the family and loved ones of those involved.
Local TV footage showed lines of people with their hands above their heads evacuating the office building.
Finance workers at an office building down the block were picking up dinner at a corner eatery when they heard a loud noise and saw people running, AP reported.
"It was like a crowd panic," said Anna Smith, who joined the workers pouring back into the finance office building.
They remained there for about 2 hours before being told they could leave.
The building includes offices for Blackstone and the Consulate General of Ireland, located a short walk north from Grand Central Terminal.
The city's emergency management alert system warned of traffic delays, road closures and disruptions to public transportation in the area.
Through late July, New York City is on pace to have its fewest murders and fewest people hurt by gunfire than any year in recent decades.

US politics live: ‘Felons': Democrat politicians threatened with arrest

Welcome to our coverage of US politics. A battle is brewing in Texas over a Donald Trump backed plan designed to skew the state even more Republican. Democrat politicians have fled the state in a desperate attempt to stop a vote on a new map of Texas electoral districts which could give Mr Trump's party more seats and therefore more power in Congress. But Texas' Republican Governor Greg Abbott has demanded the Democrats return or he will expel them from the legislatures. He's even said some could be 'felons' and arrested. Donald Trump has doubled down on his claim that July's new jobs number were 'rigged' in order to put him in a bad light. He sacked the official in charge of the figures after they showed fewer jobs than expected were created in the US. While there have been adjustments to jobs figures after publication, there is no evidence of wrongdoing. Donald Trump is once again railing at Taylor Swift. Meanwhile the US president has gone on a social media rant about his claims of the perils of being 'woke' after a small furore over a jeans ad featuring Sydney Sweeney. Mr Trump has now decided that he, single-handedly, destroyed Taylor Swift's popularity. That's despite her being immensely popular. 'Look at Woke singer Taylor Swift. Ever since I alerted the world as to what she was by saying … that I can't stand her (HATE!), she was booed out of the Super Bowl and became, NO LONGER HOT. 'The tide has seriously turned — Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be.' Swift is the world's second richest music artist with a net worth of $US1.6 billion. Police offer $1m reward to find out who ordered hit on Robert Issa

Police are offering a $1m reward to find out who ordered a hit on gangland figure Robert Issa, who was shot dead in a car at Craigieburn Central shopping centre in 2023. Five men were charged with Mr Issa's murder last week, but homicide detectives are keen to identify crime bosses further up the chain who ordered and paid for the hit. A 29-year old man from Kew, a 31-year old man from Mickleham, a 33-year old man from Pascoe Vale and two 26-year olds from Fawkner were all charged with murder, attempted murder and arson on Thursday. Police arrest a 26-year-old man from Fawkner. Picture: Supplied Police allege Mr Issa, 27, and another associate, Eric Catanese, were sitting inside a white Mercedes station wagon parked in a shopping centre carpark when gunmen fired shots into their car just before 3pm on October 7, 2023. Witnesses pulled Mr Issa from the car and attempted to perform CPR until emergency services arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Catanese, from Melbourne's north and now aged 30, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The offenders fled the scene in a black Range Rover that was found burnt out in Westmeadows about 30 minutes later. Gangland figure Robert Issa was shot and killed in a suspected underworld hit. Picture: Supplied The Herald Sun reported that Mr Issa had fallen out with underworld figures in the lead-up to his death. Mr Issa was thought to be associated with a figure linked to the Comanchero bikie gang who was suspected of playing a role in a string of retaliatory fire bombings targeting businesses and residences throughout Melbourne. The newspaper also reported detectives were investigating if Mr Issa made enemies attempting to break into Victoria's illicit tobacco trade and whether the five men charged over his death were involved in a drive-by shooting at his parents' house. Homicide squad detectives believe other people have direct knowledge about the motive of the incident and who was involved, including those who ordered the hit. Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said Mr Issa had connections to organised crime groups. Picture: NewsWire / Diego Fedele Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said police knew Mr Issa had connections to organised crime groups and this has added complexity to the investigation, including a motive. 'Five men have been charged for their alleged roles in the shooting on the day, but as we have said, this offending involves more than just those in the car on the night – it's the planning, the financing, those further up the chain and the facilitators,' he said. 'That is the reason for this reward. We know there are others out there and we will take every step in this investigation to identify them. 'If this reward leads to someone coming forward, then any information they provide will be thoroughly investigated. 'We have already made clear we will do everything we can to identify every single person involved in both the planning and the execution, and now there are one million reasons to come forward with any information you may have.'

Erin Patterson: CCTV released of mushroom cook killer dumping dehydrator after fatal lunch

Footage of the moment triple-killer Erin Patterson dumped her dehydrator at a local tip has been released by Victoria's Supreme Court. The CCTV footage, spanning 47 seconds, captures Patterson arriving at the Koonwarra Transfer Station in the morning of August 2, 2023, in her red MG SUV and carry the black bulky item directly into a shed. The 50-year-old mother of two was found guilty last month of murdering three of her husband Simon Patterson's relatives, and the attempted murder of a fourth, with a poisoned beef wellington just days earlier on July 29. Simon's parents, Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson died from death cap mushroom poisoning in the week following the lunch while Heather's husband, Ian Wilkinson, survived. Patterson will return to court on Friday. Picture: NewsWire/ David Crosling CCTV captured her dumping the dehydrator. Picture: Supplied/ Supreme Court of Victoria During her trial, the jury was shown the footage as police described locating the Sunbeam Food Lab dehydrator in the tip's e-waste bin on August 4. It was later found to contain remnants of death cap mushrooms. The court was told Patterson's trip came the morning after she was released from Monash Hospital on the afternoon of August 1. On the stand, Patterson claimed she dumped the dehydrator in a panic after Simon allegedly confronted her in hospital — an incident he says never happened. 'He said to me, 'Is that how you poisoned my parents, using that dehydrator?'' she said. Patterson claimed she realised soon after she might be wrongly blamed for the deaths and took steps to hide evidence. The dehydrator was soon located. Picture: Supplied/ Supreme Court of Victoria The jury heard Patterson had purchased the dehydrator just two months earlier on April 28 and shared with friends online she'd been hiding dehydrated mushrooms in everything. 'I've been hiding powdered mushrooms in everything. Mixed it into chocolate brownies yesterday, the kids had no idea,' one message reads. Another said; 'So fun fact the dehydrator reduces mushroom mass by 90 per cent. Do you think Woolies would mind if I put the dehydrator into their vegetable section and dry things before I buy them.' A second video of Patterson handing over a mobile phone to Detective Sergeant Luke Farrell on August 5, a week after the lunch, was also released. Patterson, sitting at the dining table in her family home, when Sergeant Farrell asks Patterson to hand over her phone and provide him the pin code. 'Thanks for your patience today, Erin. We're completing our search,' Detective Farrell says in the footage. At trial, Patterson maintained she was innocent and did not intentionally poison anyone. Instead, the jury heard, the case was a tragic foraging accident with wild mushrooms inadvertently making their way into the beef wellington lunch. Patterson is set to return to the Victorian Supreme Court on Friday, where it's expected a date will be listed for a pre-sentence hearing.
