M3GAN 2.0 risks crossing ‘really fine line' with explicit jokes

Film bosses had intense conversations about whether multiple vagina jokes were acceptable in the M3GAN 2.0 sequel, director Gerard Johnstone has confessed.
Two years after the murderous doll, expertly played by Amie Donald, went on a rampage on the big screen, she has returned for a second helping alongside Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Jenna Davis, Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps.
In a fresh take on the horror movie sequel, this time there is some doll on doll – or robot on robot – action as she faces off against Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno), another creation who is transformed into a military bot.
However, things take a turn when she becomes self-aware and targets her creators, leaving Gemma (Allison) no choice but to upgrade Megan's software to give them all a fighting chance of survival.
Speaking to Metro ahead of the release on June 27, filmmaker Gerard shed light on the truth behind the character's sassiness, and whether they ever crossed a 'really fine line' in the script.
'There were conversations about whether or not you can have two vagina jokes in one movie,' he let slip. 'But in the end, the fun won out in that one, so we went for it.
'I was conscious of what the line is going into it. As I've been saying to a lot of people, bless them, the marketing campaign of this movie has been huge, but it sort of sometimes portrays the movie as being a little bit more camp than it really is.
'This really rides a fine line of tension and humor, and as we do this film, we're very conscious of that, of never overstepping the mark.'
While Gerard and co were worried about overstepping, they made sure that fans of different genres of movies would be delighted with the finished product.
After the trailer for the follow-up premiered, many were concerned that the scary elements that made the first movie so iconic had been swapped with an action-heavy plot.
Despite some differences, the director has promised that the 'horror DNA' is still as present – and compared his plans for the creepy doll to another huge movie franchise.
'For me, it's an extension of the character,' he continued. 'When I was a kid, the Evil Dead movies were a huge influence on me, and I was freaked out by 1, rocked by 2 – but also conscious that it had a sense of humor – and then 3 was just this flat-out adventure with demons in it.
'To me, that was just such a great reminder that you don't have to be bound by limitations, as long as you have a great character and you're true to the origins of your tale. I think that's what is happening with M3GAN 2.0, really.
'We're conscious of the fact that she's this murder-bot, but if we're going to have a redemption story for her, then why not move into more of the action realm, and espionage? Certainly, if a technology like Megan exists, it would be used in military robots. It would be an infiltration Android.
'I just thought, if a technology like Megan existed, this is the most obvious way to use it. Instead of drones, you can send in something that looks like a human and it's a much more targeted way of carrying out strikes.
'As soon as I looked at it from a logical point of view, it just made sense that the genre would have to change.' More Trending
'Having said that there are a lot of sequences in the movie that are anchored in a horror DNA,' he insisted. 'Especially Megan's lair, for example. But it's a different kind of horror. It's more mood and atmosphere, and it's undoubtedly more fun.
'We've taken the villain from the first movie and put her center stage. By virtue of doing that, it's not going to be quite as creepy as the first movie, but it's a different experience, and one that I still think is a hell of a lot of fun.'
He's definitely not wrong…
M3GAN 2.0 is in cinemas from June 27.

Original Naked Gun director reveals why he's refusing to watch the new remake

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video David Zucker, the director of the original Naked Gun movie, has explained why he won't be watching the new film starring Liam Neeson. The 2025 remake is jam-packed with talent, starring Pamela Anderson, Danny Huston, and Paul Walter Hauser, and directed by The Lonely Island's Akiva Schaffer, and produced by Family Guy's Seth MacFarlane. Fans have been praising the 'jaw-dropping' reboot, with much of the praise directed at Neeson, 72, who stars in the film as Nielson's son Frank Drebin Jr. The trailer saw Liam ditch his typical movie persona and flash his strawberry undies, nailing the comedic role. But despite emphasising his excitement for the film, Zucker, 77, won't be tuning in to watch the remake. 'I'm excited about it because it just shows that there's a strong market for comedy in movie theatres, and spoof in particular, Zucker tells The Hollywood Reporter. 'People are liking it, which is great. I really like the director, and I just couldn't wish him more well,' he said, adding that he'd texted Schaffer and wanted to meet up with him in the coming months. 'I'm not gonna see it, but I don't see any of the sequels that were of my material done by other people, and that's fine.' He added that he'd even told the director this, rejecting his invitations to a viewing: 'I've told Akiva that I have no intention to see it.' 'He actually invited me to come see an early cut of it, but I told him there's nothing I could do to help because it really isn't what I would have done. That's not to say that he didn't actually end up doing a good movie. 'But I don't think I could help with that.' Zucker directed the first movie in the franchise, The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! in 1988 and followed up to direct the second movie in 1991, The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear. In 1994, a third movie in the franchise was released, titled Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult, directed by Peter Segal. Zucker is credited as both a writer and producer in the third version of the film. A reboot of the franchise has been in the works at Paramount for years, with a fourth film – The Naked Gun: What 4? Rhythm of Evil – planned as a direct-to-TV sequel in 2009. It was set to follow on from 1994's Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult but ended up cancelled for budgetary reasons, with Nielsen dying in 2010. More Trending In 2013, development initially began again on a sequel with The Hangover star Ed Helms as Frank Drebin, but this was later scrapped. The comedy reboot has been incredibly well received and has made critics 'laugh until it hurts'. It earned an impressive 91% ranking on Rotten Tomatoes, and has already been a smash at the box office. The Naked Gun is out in cinemas now. Got a story? Netflix fans have hours to binge ‘gruesome' horror before season 2 finally drops

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Life is about to take a dark turn as one of Netflix's most-watched shows finally returns for a second season. It's been three years since Wednesday landed on our screens with Jenna Ortega portraying the brattiest member of the Addams family and titular gothic teenager. Since coming out, the Tim Burton-directed horror-comedy series has made a lasting impression as the most popular English-language show on the streaming platform, with a whopping 252,100,000 views. For comparison, trailing behind at the number two spot is Adolescence with a respectable, but considerably smaller sum of 142.6 million views. The show offers a new take on the iconic fictional family with a focus on Wednesday as a scathing teen who gets caught up solving a murder mystery with her new roommate (brighter-than-the-sun) Enid Sinclair (portrayed by Emma Myers). Strange creatures, ominous spirits and conniving creatures haunt the corridors of Nevermore Academy – and they must all face Wednesday's brutal wit and sadistic tendencies. If you are one of the few Netflix subscribers who somehow haven't watched the hit series (that is no doubt banking on the same success a second time around), then now is the time to finally catch up. On Google Reviews, Aaron R called it 'creepy, kooky and spooky', adding: 'Jenna Ortega IS Wednesday with a knockout performance worthy of praise, and Tim Burton's distinct vision for the show is stellar. Bottom line is there's a lot of fun to be had here and is certainly worth a binge or two. Go watch it.' 'Jenna Ortega's portrayal of the titular Wednesday is both spot-on and surprisingly nuanced, capturing the character's signature deadpan wit and sharp intelligence while also delving into her complex emotions. 'The series cleverly blends the macabre with teenage angst, creating a unique and darkly humorous world,' Harshasai Gubbala added. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, Collixen D praised it for 'so many twists and turns'. Dan W love its 'dark humour' and Jacob D called it a 'near perfect series' with 'incredible world building'. All in all, the show has secured a steady 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes as well as plenty of critical acclaim with 12 Emmy nominations, including four wins. A season one rewatch is sure to whet the appetite for the new episodes which will feature Lady Gaga as a Nevermore teacher alongside a new single, Dead Dance. More Trending The upcoming episodes will also guest star Billie Piper, Thandiwe Newton and Joanna Lumley. The creators, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, said about the second season: 'This season, Wednesday's journey is darker and more complex as she navigates family, friends, new mysteries, and old adversaries, propelling her headlong into another year at Nevermore.'
