MONDAY
"Where are your slippers?" Amanda said. "You'll need your slippers."
Much is at fate for the destiny and wellbeing of New Zealand as I head to China this week to deliver a set of deliverables.
"I can't find your slippers," she said.
Other great helmsmen from history must have felt the same excitement and sense of purpose as they prepared to carry the hopes of their people and sit down to make sure they get share of mind.
"Your feet get so cold in air-conditioned hotel rooms," she said.
But it's more than the welfare of Kiwis that is at stake. These talks in China are held at a delicately poised time of increased global volatility and I have an important voice as world leaders iron out a phased launch within a wider strategy.
"If you won't help, then suit yourself," she said.
The DPS arrived. It was time to go. The great tides of history wait for no man.
TUESDAY
It's a very long flight to China but that allowed an opportunity to get to know the trade delegates from Zespri, Fonterra, and Supercheap Auto which stocks a variety of car batteries, air filters, coolants and more.
Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran was also among the delegation.
"Not what it used to be, is it," I said.
"Sorry?"
"The airline. It used to be one of the world's great airlines. I led it into an era of unprecedented success but the bottom seems to have fallen out since I left office."
"None of that is true," he said, and left to use the bathroom. I never saw him again.
WEDNESDAY
We raced off out of the blocks with meetings to raise awareness of the New Zealand tourism offering in the Chinese market, and a visit to a cosmetics factory even to discuss regulatory barriers of skincare products.
You don't want to boil the ocean by alphabetising our client contact information but at the same time you want to reach out and come away with important learnings.
I was on my feet all day. They hurt and I think I might have chilblains.
THURSDAY
To the Langham Hotel for a Fonterra event promoting grass-fed dairy where attendees were served milk in Champagne flutes.
And then the Peninsula Hotel, to oversee the announcement of a new flight route between China and South America, stopping in Auckland.
After that, The Do Drop Inn where reps from Supercheap Auto wowed Chinese officials with budget deals on the Tridon Coolant Temperature Sensor, Fuel Injection Air Flow Meter and the Bissell Spot Clean Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner.
Our tiger team really moved the needle on that one.
But it was misery to go back to the hotel. They keep the air-con on high and I just could not get my feet warm.
FRIDAY
A face-to-face with President Xi in Beijing — my first since China sent a strike force into the Tasman Sea without warning.
I said to him, 'We have huge areas of co-operation that can advance the wealth of both countries, but we also have to acknowledge that we have differences."
He seemed to be playing Solitaire on his phone, but he gave me his full attention, and asked, "What differences?"
I thought of the possible bonanza in sales of meat and kiwifruit.
I thought of the benefits of the visit to the skincare event and the excitement caused by good deals on motor oil provided by Supercheap Auto.
Mainly I thought of how my feet were frozen blocks of ice, and I said, "Nothing really. It's all good. Let's lean into our moving parts and build on our core competency!"
The DPS arrived. It was time to go. They had found me a pair of slippers.

Never mind the swear words, politicians need to raise debate quality
I don't believe people are genuinely shocked by the language we're all hearing every night on our streaming TV shows. What is shocking is the standard of argument being employed by politicians and parties as they seek to score points with silly populist arguments. On my Facebook and Instagram feeds, the Labour Party has been trying to tell me that the Government is to blame for soaring butter prices. It has posted a chart of butter prices pointing out that they have doubled since the National-led coalition came to power. That's annoyed me on a number of levels. Despite the fact it seems to enrage many Kiwis, soaring dairy prices are clearly a net gain for the economy. We sell a lot more internationally than we consume locally and the current dairy price spike is expected to bring in an additional $10 billion in export revenue over this year and next. It's exactly what our economy needed. The impact on consumers is overstated. Butter prices have doubled in two years. You used to be able to get a 500g block for about $4.50 now it's about $8.50. That's an extra $4 a week, far less than petrol prices fluctuate on a regular basis. Also, there are numerous butter substitutes and blends that haven't risen nearly that much. I understand why someone on the Labour Party team has tried to milk the dairy price story (sorry for the pun). It is a headline grabber and an easy online meme. I bet the analytics on it look great. But it makes no sense in the real world. The Government has no control over international dairy prices. There are things a government could do to reduce the cost of butter for local consumers. They could subsidise the price with taxpayer money. Or they could impose price controls on farmers and force them to sell a certain amount locally. These would be terrible policies, and there is no chance Labour is about to adopt them. So butter prices would be exactly the same right now if they had won the last election. More broadly, inflation is running rampant like it was throughout 2021 and 2022. It has edged up to 2.5% but remains within the Reserve Bank's 1-3% target band. The same Stats NZ release that included the butter price graph also pointed out that annual rent price increases haven't been below 2.8% since 2011. Of course, much lower inflation isn't all good news. The fact it is underperforming so badly is giving economists confidence that inflation will stay subdued. The economy is struggling to get any momentum and there is no doubt a lot of people are doing it tough. There's no shortage of real issues with this recovery, which the current Government ought to take some responsibility for. Labour could legitimately be attacking the Government on unemployment and job security. There are tens of thousands more people on the Jobseeker benefit now than there were when Labour was in power. I don't mean to single out Labour either. The National Party spent a lot of time in opposition attacking Labour for letting those Jobseeker numbers rise. It also drives me crazy when the Government holds press conferences after the Official Cash Rate announcement to take credit for falling interest rates. Interest rates are falling because inflation is under control and the economy is underperforming. If they go much lower, it will be because things are getting worse, not better. Meanwhile, in the past week, we've had David Seymour running 'victim of the day' social media attacks on opponents of his regulatory standards bill. Seymour says he is being 'playful' and having 'fun' with his line, suggesting opponents are suffering from 'Regulatory Standards Derangement Syndrome'. Surely if the bill is worth putting before Parliament, then it must have been aimed at delivering some sort of meaningful change to the status quo. Let's have a grown-up debate about what that intended change is. What's frustrating about political debate in 2025 is that politicians are so quick to build 'straw man' arguments because they seem easy to sell as memes and headlines. A 'straw man', for the record, is where you present a weak version or flawed version of your opponent's argument so you can easily dismiss it. It's lazy and doesn't do anything to boost the quality of policy-making in this country. It's probably too much to ask, but wouldn't it be nice if our politicians were confident enough in their view to employ the opposite of a 'straw man' argument? That's called a 'steel-man' argument. It requires you to consciously present the strongest and most charitable version of your opponent's argument. Then you explain why it still doesn't stack up. It requires you to do a bit of homework and think through the logical basis for your argument. I'm pretty sure all the leaders of our political parties are smart enough to do that. But we seem to be following a depressing international trend which sees social media debate reduce everything to simplistic points which appeal to an increasingly tribal political base. New Zealand has a cyclical recovery underway that would have happened, at a greater or lesser pace, regardless of who was in power. Scrapping over that is pointless. We need to be looking ahead to how we lift the economy at a structural level and enable higher levels of cyclical growth. That requires some serious work and will need a higher quality of debate than what we've been seeing this year. This column will take a two-week break as the author is on holiday with his family. Solomon Islands Media Professionals Gain Insightful Experience Of China's Media, Culture, And Mesmeric Growth
Four media professionals from the Solomon Islands (SI) successfully completed a two-week seminar on Full-Media Communication for 'Belt and Road Countries' in China, describing the training program as an eye-opener as cooperation between the two countries further deepened. Organized by the Research and Training Institute of the National Radio and Television Administration (RTI of NRTA), the seminar ran from June 6th to 19th, 2025. Participants included 30 media professionals from national broadcasting and television authorities, mainstream media organizations, and influential private media institutions in Belt and Road Initiative countries, including Bulgaria, Grenada, Hungary, Mongolia, Mozambique, Palestine, Romania, South Sudan, Tonga, and the Solomon Islands. Most participants were Directors, Managers, Editors, and Senior Journalists. Representing the Solomon Islands are: Frederick Osifelo, Manager of the Television Services of Solomon Telekom Company Limited (STCL) Stephen Hachi, Producer & Technical Director of NIU Solomons Karl Tokuro Vaekesa, CEO, Producer & Director of Studiohomegrown Productions Company, Solomon Islands Stephen Diisango, Director of Communication & Public Relations, Ministry of Rural Development, Solomon Islands Government The program was another testament to the Chinese government's ongoing commitment to promoting communication and mutual understanding between China and the Solomon Islands, as well as providing more support for sustainable development in the Solomon Islands. The trip was a success, providing participants with the opportunity to learn about, appreciate, and experience China's rich history, culture, and traditions. It also helped them understand China's media landscape, functions, and how media plays a critical role in the country's governance. Sharing their experiences, the Solomon Islands delegates said that the trip was an eye-opener and an experience of a lifetime. 'The program was more than just a trip — it was a testament to firm collaboration, shared learning, mutual understanding, and reverence. 'China's infrastructure development, agriculture, technology, and manufacturing sectors are remarkable. Likewise, China's success in lifting millions out of poverty is a momentous triumph and offers valuable lessons for other developing countries, including the Solomon Islands,' they said. Despite ongoing Western narratives and negative portrayals of China in the public domain, participants stated that their perceptions of China have now completely changed. They vowed to promote truthful information about China's reality to family members and citizens of the Solomon Islands. 'This trip to China is an experience of a lifetime. We have learned a lot and built new connections with participants and friends from around the world. Our country, Solomon Islands, has a lot to learn from China, as do the rest of the world. We believe China has much to offer globally. 'Chinese people are among the kindest and most loyal you can find anywhere. They are hardworking, polite, and respectful,' the SI participants attested. They further noted that China's firm commitment to working alongside Pacific countries, including the Solomon Islands, in areas such as infrastructure, telecommunications, education, agriculture, environment, and health cooperation is impressive. The program also provided an opportunity for delegates to visit some of China's leading media organizations, historical sites, and heritage sites in Beijing and Yunnan Province to witness China's rapid development over the years. In Beijing, the delegates visited omnimedia institutions such as China Media Group Mobile, Kuaishou Technology, and iQIYI, engaging with omnimedia creators to gain insights into the integration and transformation of China's mainstream media, as well as concepts of omnimedia communication and operation. They also travelled to Yunnan Province, visiting Yunnan Media Group, Kunming Broadcasting and Television Company, China Radio and Television Yunnan Network Co., Ltd., Kunming Media Convergence Center, Yunnan's key laboratory of Artificial Intelligence (Kunming University of Science & Technology), Yunnan Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Shilin One County, One Industry Ginseng Fruit Industrial Base & Xinglin Grand Garden. On the cultural front, participants took the opportunity to visit Chinese landmarks such as the Great Wall, the Temple of Heaven, Yunnan Nationalities/Ethnic Village, and Shilin Global Geopark Scenic County, exploring China's rich historical and cultural heritage. The Solomon Islands delegates expressed profound gratitude to the Chinese Embassy in the Solomon Islands, the Solomon Islands Government, and the organizing committee of RTI of NRTA for the opportunity to participate in the seminar. Since the formalization of diplomatic relations between China and the Solomon Islands in 2019, China has consistently shared advanced technology, management experience, and development concepts aligned with the Solomon Islands' development strategies and needs, helping to cultivate specialized talents. In the first six months of 2025, over 300 Solomon Islands officials and professionals benefited from capacity-building programs in China across various fields such as agriculture, infrastructure, communication, education, health, media, and climate change. These efforts have contributed to promoting the economic and social development of the Solomon Islands, fostering governance exchange, knowledge sharing, skills development, people-to-people relationships, and laying a solid foundation for long-term cooperation and mutual growth. The seminar was funded by the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) of the People's Republic of China.

REVEALED: IKEA Consent Shows Why We Can't Have Nice Things
'IKEA's consent conditions show the absurd demands that councils are able to make that slow development, drive up cost, and make New Zealand a less attractive place to do business,' says ACT Leader David Seymour. ACT has obtained a copy of the 2023 resource consent for IKEA's Sylvia Park development. IKEA's consent requirements include: Inviting representatives of seven different mana whenua groups 'to undertake cultural monitoring, karakia and other such cultural ceremonies on the site' at the pre-start meeting, commencement of earthworks and immediately prior to completion of bulk earthworks across the site, with 10 days' notice before each of those events. Consulting with mana whenua on design aspects including erosion and sediment control measures, stormwater treatment, planting, the 'Culvert-edge walkway', and fencing. Mana whenua must be afforded the opportunity to provide Cultural Monitoring as deemed required by the respective mana whenua representatives. Mana whenua must be afforded access to the site at their discretion. 'What message do conditions like these send to other businesses looking to invest in New Zealand?" says Seymour. 'This is especially relevant for supermarkets, where we urgently need more competition. Companies like Aldi or Coles will think twice about entering the market if they realise they'll face this cultural rigmarole at hundreds of separate sites, each with potentially different requirements. 'We should be rolling out the welcome mat for anyone wanting to bring much-needed competition to New Zealand. Instead, we're forcing them to navigate demands based on metaphysical concepts not required anywhere else in the world. The result is Kiwis see higher prices at the checkout, less jobs, and lower incomes. 'That's why Cabinet has agreed there will be no general Treaty principles clause in the new resource management system. We will continue to uphold Treaty settlements, but we cannot continue to have planners bogging down everyone's consents by demanding this sort of absurdity."
