Rapid Kuantan to continue bus services until new operator appointed
Pahang Public Works, Transport and Health Committee chairman Datuk Ir. Razali Kassim assured that Rapid Kuantan would continue providing services until a new concessionaire takes over.
"There are no new developments regarding the Rapid stage buses (to cease operations). So, they will continue offering services as usual," he told the New Straits Times when met at the Gambang toll plaza yesterday.
Rapid Kuantan did not submit a bid for the Stage Bus Service Transformation 2.0 (SBST 2.0) programme in Kuantan, citing rising operational costs. Their services were initially expected to end last month.
Last year, Razali had said, based on information from the Land Public Transport Agency, that a new concessionaire was expected to begin stage bus operations in Kuantan starting May this year.
Earlier, Razali, accompanied by Pahang Road Transport Department director Syed Ahmad Khairulanwar Alyahya Syed Abdul Rahman, distributed goodies to motorists at the toll plaza as part of the Aidiladha Road Safety Advocacy Programme.

Call for Perlis youths to take up agriculture, reduce reliance on aging farmers
PADANG BESAR: Youths in Perlis are being called on to take up agriculture as a viable career path, amid concerns that the sector is increasingly reliant on elderly farmers. According to the state-level 2024 Agriculture Census Interim Report, 54.4 per cent of farmers in the state are aged 60 and above. In contrast, only 18.2 per cent of those involved in agriculture are between 15 and 45. State Agriculture, Plantation and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Razali Saad said it was crucial to get young people involved to ensure long-term food security and economic sustainability. "There are many government incentives and support schemes in place to help young people get started in agriculture, as this sector plays a key role in our state's economy, and the youth should seize the opportunity to develop their own ventures," he told reporters today. Razali said many senior farmers currently active had only entered agriculture after retiring from other careers, which partly explained the demographic imbalance. "The challenge is that many young people still prefer jobs outside agriculture. This is why we need to promote the sector more actively as a professional and rewarding option," he added.

Prasarana names new chairman, acting CEO in leadership reshuffle
KUALA LUMPUR: Prasarana Malaysia Bhd has named Tan Sri Mohd Nasir Ahmad as its new group chairman and Amir Hamdan as acting president and group chief executive officer (CEO), effective Aug 1 and July 15, respectively. Mohd Nasir, who previously led Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Bhd (PUNB) and has chaired CIMB Group Holdings Bhd since 2018, replaces Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim, whose term ended on April 30. Amir, currently group chief operating officer (operations), will succeed Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah, who leaves the company on July 14. His appointment reflects Prasarana's focus on leadership continuity and operational stability, it said in a statement. Since joining Prasarana in 2019 as deputy chief financial officer, Amir has held several key roles, including CEO of Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd. He is credited with driving operational improvements and service reliability across the group's rail network. Amir holds a Bachelor's degree in commerce from Lincoln University, New Zealand, and a Master's in Islamic financial practice from INCEIF University. He is also a certified member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. Prasarana said the combined experience of Mohd Nasir and Amir will support the government's target of achieving 40 per cent public transport usage by 2030. Prasarana operates urban rail, bus and on-demand public transport services in the Klang Valley, Penang and Kuantan. The company logged a record 1.5 million daily passengers on Dec 31, 2024, a reduction in rail service disruptions from 255 in 2022 to 71 in 2024, and the rollout of the Rapid on-demand van service.

Johor-Singapore RTS Link hits 56% completion, set for 2026 launch
JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link has achieved 56 per cent physical progress as of June, marking a significant milestone in the cross-border infrastructure project. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi confirmed the progress, highlighting advancements in track construction, station development, and system testing. He expressed confidence that the project would elevate Johor's economic standing in the region. 'The RTS Link reflects the commitment of both the state and federal governments, alongside Singapore, to deliver modern, efficient, and safe infrastructure for public convenience,' Onn Hafiz said in a Facebook post today. The RTS Link, connecting Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru to Woodlands North in Singapore, will slash travel time to just five minutes. The project aims to alleviate border congestion while strengthening Malaysia-Singapore relations and stimulating regional economic growth. Scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, the RTS Link is designed for high efficiency, with a capacity of 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction. During peak hours, trains will run at 3.6-minute intervals, accommodating up to 180,000 passengers daily. Onn Hafiz, alongside Transport Minister Anthony Loke, attended the launch of the first RTS Link train in Singapore today. The event was also graced by Singapore's Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow and Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.
