Ali Maher succeeds El Ramadi as Ceramica Cleopatra coach - Egyptian Football

Al-Ahram Weekly24-02-2025
Masry's departing coach Ali Maher has been appointed as Ceramica Cleopatra new coach to succeed Ayman El Ramadi whose contract was ended amicably earlier on Monday.
After a series of poor results, Ceramica Cleopatra announced early today that it was parting ways with the 59-year-old El Ramadi by mutual consent. Then, it announced that it had hired Maher as their new coach.
'The club board decided to appoint Maher as the team's new coach in an important step to enhance the performance and achieving goals of next term,' the club said in a statement.
Ceramica Cleopatra didn't secure a single win in the last five league games, losing three and drawing in two.
The dismissal of El Ramadi comes 48 hours after Saturday's 2-0 league loss to Gouna.
El Ramadi, who took charge in July 2023, has guided the team through 60 matches, securing 23 wins and 17 draws and losing the remaining 29 games.
His prominent achievement with the team was guiding them to win the Egyptian League Cup title twice in the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 seasons.
The team currently lie seventh in the Egyptian Premier League table with 21 points from 15 games, 15 points behind leaders Pyramids FC.
Quick appointment
Maher's appointment comes hours after the Port Said-based Masry announced his departure following the team's recent struggles.
Masry has recently dropped in form, winning only one of the last five games.
However, it remains fifth in the Egyptian Premier League standings with 24 points, nine behind joint leaders Pyramids FC and Ahly.
Their latest setback was a scoreless draw against relegation-threatened Ismaily on Saturday.
The 51-year-old former Ahly player Maher took over Masry in 2023 for a second stint and propelled the team into the top four, their best position in five years.
Maher, who announced his retirement as a player in 2004, was a coach for several Egyptian premier league clubs, including Al Assiouty, Smouha, Enppi, Masry and Future FC.

Tennis: Sabalenka downs former doubles partner to power into Wimbledon quarters - Omni sports

World number one Aryna Sabalenka marched into the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Sunday as her former doubles partner Elise Mertens fell short of upsetting the US Open champion. Sabalenka has never reached a final at the All England Club but is the player to beat as the only one of the top six seeds in the women's draw still standing. The 27-year-old missed last year's Wimbledon due to injury and was banned in 2022 as part of a blanket suspension on Russian and Belarusian athletes due to the invasion of Ukraine. Sabalenka looks determined to make up for lost time and, just like in her third-round victory over Emma Raducanu, had to overcome a tough test from Mertens to progress 6-4, 7-6 (7/4). The pair won the 2019 US Open and 2021 Australian Open together as a doubles partnership, but Sabalenka has now won their last 10 meetings against each other in singles. "It's tough to play against someone you know quite close, it's tricky facing her," said Sabalenka. "I know how smart she is, I know she is going to fight until the very end. "She really challenged me today and I'm super happy with the win." A fast start from Sabalenka saw her stretch out to a 4-1 first set lead, only for Mertens to battle back and level at 4-4. The three-time Grand Slam winner responded in style, winning eight of the next 11 points, to take the set. Mertens got the early break in the second, but the world number 23 could not hold on. Sabalenka broke back to tie up the second set at 3-3 and after six straight holds of serve, the match was decided in a tie-break. Mertens again had the early advantage, but Sabalenka's blistering ground strokes forced the Belgian onto the back foot before a volleyed winner sealed victory in just over 90 minutes on court. Sabalenka faces Germany's Laura Siegemund in the last eight on Tuesday. "It's such a beautiful tournament. I always dreamed of winning it," she added of potentially claiming a first Wimbledon title. "I'm just trying to give my best and really hope for the best." Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Tennis: 'Stole the game': Wimbledon line-calling tech malfunctions - Omni sports

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova said a game was "stolen" from her after Wimbledon's electronic line-calling system failed at a key moment in her fourth-round match against Sonay Kartal on Sunday. The Russian put the controversy behind her to beat the British player 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 in just over two hours on Centre Court. But the glitch in the fourth-round match follows concerns raised by other players about the technology. A fully automated system has replaced human line judges at Wimbledon in 2025, ending nearly 150 years of history. On Sunday, a tight first set between Pavlyuchenkova and Kartal was marred by a computer failure that could have proved pivotal. At 4-4, Pavlyuchenkova, who had saved two break points in the game, held game point when a Kartal backhand landed clearly over the baseline but no call came. Chair umpire Nico Helwerth shouted "stop, stop" to halt play. Addressing the crowd, Helwerth said: "We're just going to check if the system was up and running, because there was no audio call." After a telephone call, he said the electronic system "was unfortunately unable to track the last point so we will replay the point". Kartal went on to break for a 5-4 lead. Pavlyuchenkova angrily made her case to the umpire, saying: "They stole the game from me, they stole it." Bu the Russian world number 50 broke back and won the tie-break to take a firm grip on the match, breaking twice in the second set to progress to the quarter-finals. The All England Club released a short statement on the incident. "Due to operator error the system was deactivated on the point in question," said an spokesman. "The chair umpire followed the established process." Automated line-calling technology has become standard across tennis, with all events on the men's ATP Tour and many WTA tournaments using it. The Australian Open and the US Open are fully automated but the French Open remains an outlier, sticking to human line judges. Britain's Emma Raducanu said she was unhappy about one call in particular during her defeat by Aryna Sabalenka on Friday. Jack Draper, the men's fourth seed, queried the accuracy of the system after his second-round defeat by Marin Cilic. Wimbledon chiefs have said they are confident in the technology. "Live electronic line-calling technology is now widely used week in and week out on tour," a spokesman said on Saturday. "The technology goes through a rigorous certification process and meets the (agreed) standards... so we can provide maximum accuracy in our officiating." Pavlyuchenkova will play Linda Noskova or Amanda Anisimova in the last eight. The 34-year-old was diagnosed with Lyme disease in February and has spent several months struggling to recover her form. Bayern's Musiala out for 'long period' with broken fibula

The 22-year-old Germany international was hurt in a challenge with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma as Bayern lost 2-0 in the quarter-finals in Atlanta on Saturday. Coach Vincent Kompany was incensed by the injury but called it an "accident". Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer criticised Donnarumma though for being "reckless". Musiala was on a flight back to Munich on Sunday morning and will undergo surgery soon, Bayern said in a statement. "This serious injury and the lengthy lay-off are a real shock for Jamal and us all. This hits FC Bayern," said sporting director Max Eberl. "Everyone knows how immensely important Jamal is for our game and what a central role he has in our team. "Furthermore, there's also a huge human impact and we all feel for him: Jamal has just come back from an injury and will now be out for another long period. He'll get everything he needs from us. "We'll support him intensively, be by his side and already look forward to when he's back on the pitch." According to German media, Musiala is expected to miss four to five months and could return just before the end of the year. "It's a situation where you don't have to go in like that; it's reckless," Neuer said after the match. "He accepts the risk of injuring his opponent."
