Gujarat police teams dispatched to Bengal, Northeast for ID verification of suspected illegal immigrants
The police department is also faced with the task of making temporary arrangements for confinement of confirmed illegal immigrants from the neighbouring country as the two Joint Interrogation Centres (JICs) in Ahmedabad and Kutch — the detention facilities for apprehended foreigners — are filled to their capacity.
Senior officers confirmed that the police teams have been sent to West Bengal, Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya, which serve as transit points for illegal migration from Bangladesh to India. A senior official said that the teams have been sent for 'verification of documents' as some of the documents provided by the people, suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals, are carrying documents, which have faraway areas of West Bengal and the northeastern states as their addresses. The police suspect that those IDs could be 'fake' and might have been procured through a network facilitating the illegal immigration.
'The teams will conduct a physical verification of documents such as Aaadhar, voting cards, bank documents and other such ID proofs produced by them. Mobile phone data of the suspects, including details of their Bangladeshi contacts, and bank details are also being probed… we are also ascertaining whether their stay in Gujarat was facilitated by any agency for cheaper labour…'
Among the questions facing the agencies that have now detained over 1,500 people across the state, is the confinement of the confirmed illegal immigrants, until they are deported. A senior Gujarat police officer said, 'The two detention centres (JICs) at Ahmedabad and Kutch, which have a capacity of about 100 and 70, respectively, are already overcrowded… The respective city police will have to make temporary arrangements locally to confine the illegal immigrants until the deportation is complete.'
In Vadodara, Police Commissioner Narasimha Komar said that over 1300 suspected Bangladeshi nationals have been rounded up since Saturday — eight of them were confirmed as illegal immigrants. Komar also said that 41 others are suspected to be illegal immigrants, and a verification of their documents is underway.
Komar told The Indian Express, 'Since Saturday, we have identified a total of eight Bangladeshi nationals who had been residing illegally in Vadodara. A probe is underway. Meanwhile, the Special Branch, which deals with registration of foreign nationals, has begun the process of deportation of the confirmed illegal immigrants… The necessary correspondence will be made with the government to expedite the process…'
Komar said that the Vadodara city police already have five Bangladeshi illegal immigrants in its confinement since March last year, awaiting deportation. Komar said, 'Since the JICs are full, we will make temporary arrangements for the illegal immigrants. They are not under arrest during this period but under confinement at a regulated place… We have had five Bangladeshi nationals in confinement since March 2024 on the premises of the Special Operations Group in Vadodara. We are awaiting slots to be confirmed by the Border Security Force to execute the deportation of such immigrants.'
Komar said that while the regular process of deportation can be time-consuming, the current drive against illegal immigrants, being a 'special drive', would see an expedited process. 'We believe that the government will expedite the deportation process for those illegal immigrants, who have been found since the commencement of the drive (on Saturday)…' Komar said.
Till Sunday, the Gujarat police had detained close to 1,024 and rounded up close to 1,300 suspected Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara. While 890 were detained in Ahmedabad, 134 were held in Surat. In Vadodara and Rajkot, 1300 and 800 persons have been rounded up, respectively. Of the 890 people detained in Ahmedabad, 100 have been confirmed as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, while it has been confirmed that Rajkot had 10 Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in the city.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday (July 22, 2025) called for 'systemic reform and scrutiny of all Joint Interrogation Centres (JICs)' of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, a day after the Supreme Court directed a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe and the arrest of police officials involved in the custodial torture of a fellow policeman on 'false charges'. 'A man was tortured so brutally that his genitals were mutilated is a chilling reminder of custodial abuse in J\&K. The SC's order for a CBI probe, arrests and ₹50L compensation is a long overdue step. This isn't an aberration, systemic reform and scrutiny of all JICs is urgently needed,' Ms. Mufti said. The victim, constable Khursheed Ahmad Chouhan of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, was granted a compensation of ₹50 lakh by the Supreme Court, 'recoverable from the officers concerned against whom a departmental proceeding shall be initiated upon conclusion of the investigation by the CBI.' Chouhan was arrested on February 20, 2023, and allegedly subjected to 'brutal custodial torture for six consecutive days'. 'Considering the gravity and magnitude of the custodial torture established through medical records and the institutional apathy that followed, we are of the considered opinion that this is a fit case for awarding compensation to the victim of the violence,' the Supreme Court Bench observed. According to the case records, Chouhan's genital organs and testicles were amputated. 'Pepper was sprinkled on his private parts, and he was given electric shocks which led to a fracture of his foot. He suffered grave injuries during the custodial torture, and was shifted to the District Hospital, Kupwara, in a comatose condition,' the court background note stated. 'The influence being exercised by local police officials is evident from the fact that no proper investigation was initiated despite clear medical evidence of torture, and instead, a counter FIR No. 32 of 2023 was registered against the victim himself under Section 309 of the IPC to create a false narrative,' the court noted. The Bench held that the local police at Kupwara had 'demonstrated complete institutional failure by first illegally detaining the appellant from 20th February, 2023, then subjecting him to barbaric and systematic torture.' The court also quashed FIR No. 32 of 2023 registered against the victim under Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code.

Only 52% of PM-SHRI Schools in Maharashtra have playgrounds according to Lok Sabha Answer
Only 450 out of 860 (52%) of PM-SHRI Schools in Maharashtra have playgrounds according to data shared by Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary in the Lok Sabha. The data was provided on Monday in a written answer to an unstarred question by seven opposition MPs from Maharashtra. PM-SHRI is a Union Government scheme wherein schools are developed to provide the quality education and ensure holistic development of all the students. These schools have Best in class modern facilities. This number excludes PM-SHRI Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samitis. MPs Supriya Sule, Nilesh Lanke, Varsha Gaikwad, Bhaskar Bhagare, Bajrang Sonwane, Sanjay Patil, and Dhairyaheel Mohite Patil asked Minister to provide, among other information, the number of Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and PM-SHRI Schools currently operational in the state of Maharashtra. Details about student enrolment, infrastructure availability, and faculty strength in these schools, and district-wise information was also sought. The reply stated that 3,05,210 students were enrolled in the 860 PM-SHRI Schools in the state, and the total faculty strength was 9,141. 450 of these schools have a playground, which was the only information provided under infrastructure. Nashik district had the highest number of PM-SHRI Schools at 47 followed by Yavatmal at 42, Nanded and Solapur at 39, and Pune at 38. Mumbai Suburban had the lowest number of PM-SHRI Schools (2) while Dhule district had 10 such schools. In a statement shared with The Indian Express, Mumbai North Central MP Professor Varsha Gaikwad said, 'Maharashtra had the concept of Adarsh Shala even before PM-SHRI Schools and we had identified 488 schools under the same with all basic facilities. In the NEP, they copied this concept and renamed it PM-SHRI and cut funding for our Adarsh Shalas. Playgrounds were a mandatory condition under our Adarsh Shalas, but it is really concerning that only 52% of the schools selected under the PM-SHRI Schools have playgrounds. On what basis have these schools been named PM-SHRI Schools?' Gaikwad added that the focus under the PM-SHRI Schools seemed to be more about building contractor friendly infrastructure rather than schools that provide holistic education for children. The Indian Express spoke to Srikant Giri, Principal of PM-SHRI Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) School 53 B English, and Sangeeta Band, Principal of PM-SHRI PMC School 151 B, both of whom confirmed that their schools had a playground. Giri informed that his school was the first corporation school to be certified under PM-SHRI. Smart TVs, educational drawings on walls, sports equipment, and other facilities have been installed at the schools through the scheme funds. It is important to note that the data shared in Lok Sabha does not match with the data on the PM-SHRI website dashboard. According to the Lok Sabha reply, out of the 38 schools in Pune district, only 24 have a playground. However, according to the dashboard, all 38 schools in Pune have a playground. Similarly for the Ratnagiri district, the Lok Sabha reply stated that only 3 out of the 16 PM-SHRI schools have a playground, but according to the dashboard 12 schools have a playground. Such discrepancies were seen in other districts as well. The reply also stated that the state has 60 Kendriya Vidyalayas with 76,790 students enrolled and having a faculty strength of 2,723. Pune district had the highest number of KVs at 16 while districts like Yavatmal, Washim, Solapur, Latur, Dhule, Aurangabad, Bhandara, and Parbhani had only 1 KV. Out of the 60 KVs, 52 have been designated as PM-SHRI schools. The document also says, 'all KVs in the State of Maharashtra have sufficient infrastructure, basic amenities and ICT infrastructure, including smart classrooms, computer labs and internet connectivity, achieving 100% ICT saturation.' West Bengal CM Mamata objects to letter from Haryana Police seeking verification of migrants
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday (July 22, 2025) took exception to a letter from the Haryana Police seeking verification of Bengal migrant workers working in Gurugram. Addressing a press conference at the State Secretariat, Ms. Banerjee said that the Haryana Police had sent a letter seeking verification from District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police to verify the names of 52 migrants from the State. Only a day before, on Monday, the Trinamool Congress chairperson had announced a 'language movement' in protest against the targeting of migrants from the State in BJP-ruled States for speaking in Bengali, at the party's annual Martyrs Day meeting in Kolkata. 'What do you want? to occupy West Bengal? There is a terrorism on language going on,' she remarked. The development comes at a time when scores of migrant workers from West Bengal are being detained in several States, held for days on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals. The workers are forced to return to their homes. 'BJP is mistaken' Asking the people from the State not to fear, Ms. Banerjee assured that her government would do all that was required. 'Just by indulging in such tactics, if the BJP thinks by deleting names of people from the voter list they can win West Bengal like [they did in] Delhi and Maharashtra, they are mistaken,' she said. At the press conference, the Chief Minister added that a resident of Falakata in West Bengal, Anjali Seal, had received a notice from a Foreigners Tribunal located in Kokrajhar in Assam. 'If you think that you will run the country in this manner, the country will be divided. Once the country is divided, then unity will suffer. We want the country to remain united and strong,' Ms. Banerjee said at the State Secretariat. She advised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to mind his own business and not to interfere in the issues of West Bengal. New outreach scheme announced The Chief Minister also announced a new initiative Amader Para, Amader Samadhan (Our locality, our solution), under which government officials will reach out to people across all localities. 'We are the first to take such an initiative in the country. Our officials will be present on the ground to listen to people's concerns. Each centre will cover three booths, effectively forming one unit for a particular locality,' Ms. Banerjee said. The outreach initiative will begin on August 2. Ms. Banerjee added that since there were around 80,000 booths, it would take approximately two months to complete the entire programme. She added that, under the programme, an amount of ₹10 lakh would be allocated for every booth, and that the State government would spend over ₹8,000 crore on this programme. The initiative is similar to the Duare Sarkar (Government at the doorstep) programme, which the State government had started in December 2020.
