Athletics wrap: Efrem Gidey and Mark English claim big wins as Sharlene Mawdsley impresses
Gidey was born in Eritrea but fled the war-torn country in 2016, spending several months at a refugee camp in Calais before arriving in Ireland in March 2017, where he was soon linked up with Clonliffe Harriers, where coaches Joe Cooper and Peter McDermott developed his talent. He made his international debut for Ireland at the European Cross Country Championships in 2019, winning bronze in the U-20 race behind Norwegian star Jakob Ingebrigtsen.
Since committing to full-time running over the past year, he has made considerable progress, breaking the Irish records at 10km and the half marathon on the road and over 10,000m on the track, clocking 27:26.95 in California in March. He is targeting the World Championships in Tokyo later this year but was narrowly outside the 27-man qualification quota prior to Saturday's race.
Elsewhere, Mark English produced a hugely impressive win at the Sound Running Track Fest in Los Angeles on Saturday night, the five-time European medallist unleashing a devastating kick to win over 800m in 1:44.75, close to his Irish record of 1:44.53.
'I'm really happy with that, I felt really good on that last lap and it's a credit to the work I put in, that my coach put in,' said English, who's been training under Australian coach Justin Rinaldi this year. 'I'm really happy I was that strong for the last 200 metres as you need that strength at the world level. I'm just off a stint of altitude training and it reassures me that that training works, and it also reassures me my training group has been really beneficial.'
Andrew Coscoran ran a personal best over 5000m at the same meeting of 13:11.05, which will move him inside the qualification cut-off for the World Championships, with Coscoran eyeing a double in Tokyo over 1500m and 5000m.
Sharlene Mawdsley was in action in Zagreb and the Tipperary sprinter turned in a hugely impressive run, finishing second over 400m in 51.14 to take a big step forward from her run in Savona earlier in the week.
Ava O'Connor won a silver medal in the 5000m at the NCAA Division IÍ Championships in Colorado, adding to her gold in the 3000m steeplechase, while there was a horde of Irish athletes in action at the IFAM meeting in Brussels on Saturday. The most impressive run came from Conor Kelly, the 17-year-old smashing Chris O'Donnell's Irish U-20 400m record of 46.54 and clocking 46.18 despite the wet conditions.
Darragh McElhinney was the quickest of the Irish men in the 5000m, clocking 13:26.48, while Róisín Flanagan clocked a Northern Irish record in the women's 500m of 15:22.00, with Íde Nic Dhomhnaill also impressing with a PB of 15:36.68. Sophie Becker opened her individual season with a 51.69-second clocking for 400m. Nicola Tuthill finished fourth in the hammer throw in Halle, Germany, throwing a best of 69.68m.
Meanwhile, Sarah Healy and Cathal Doyle will be in action at the Rabat Diamond League in Morocco this evening, with Doyle making his debut at this level in the 1500m at 7.54pm and Healy racing a strong field over 3000m at 8.07pm.

Irish Champion jockey hit with 14-day ban for alleged non-trier offence
Ireland's Champion conditional jump jockey Tiernan Power Roche has been hit with a hefty ban following a race at Ballinrobe on Tuesday evening. The Wexford born rider was suspended for 14-days by the raceday stewards for his ride on Coolboy Christie in the opening O´Hare´s Bar Maiden Hurdle at the Mayo venue. The stewards deemed him in breach of Rule 212, which relates to non-triers, for his effort on the Philip Rothwell-trained four-year-old who finished eighth of 13 in the race. They also suspended the horse, owned by the Geesala Racing Group Syndicate, from racing for 60 days while trainer Rothwell, who was absent, escaped any punishment. 27-year-old Power Roche was crowned champion conditional last season and is one of the brightest prospects on the Irish jumping racing scene with 40 career winners to his name. Coolboy Christie was a 40-1 chance and made late headway having been held up at the rear of the field for most of the race. Power Roche told the stewards he was following his trainer's instructions as the horse had previously raced keenly but having interviewed connections the stewards took action and hit him with a 14-day ban. The suspension could now see Power Roche miss out on the Galway Festival, which takes place next week from Monday July 28 to Sunday August 3rd. Following the race an IHRB Veterinary check reported the animal to be clinically abnormal post-race with samples taken for further analysis. The stewards' report into the race was published on the IHRB website following racing and read: 'The Raceday Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Coolboy Christy, ridden by T. Power Roche, and trained by P.J. Rothwell. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned and Mr David Nolan the trainer's Authorised Representative. 'T. Power Roche, stated that he received his instructions via telephone prior to racing from P.J. Rothwell, these were to drop in last and to settle his mount who has previously ran keen. 'He further stated that his mount made a few jumping errors but that he was happy with the ride in that he had improved from his previous runs and ran to the best of his abilities today. 'Mr David Nolan confirmed the instructions given and stated that following the race P.J. Rothwell advised him via telephone that the rider could have been seen to make more of an effort in the closing stages. 'The Raceday Stewards also received a report from the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer who reported the animal to be clinically abnormal post-race. Samples were taken for further analysis. 'Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Raceday Stewards were satisfied that T. Power Roche was in breach of Rule 212A.(ii)(in that the rider was not seen to have attempted to obtain from his mount timely, real and substantial efforts to achieve the best possible place) and having considered his clean record in this regard they suspended him for 14 racedays and ordered that he forfeit his riding fee. 'Furthermore, the Raceday Stewards under the provisions of Rule 212A(d) suspended Coolboy Christy for 60 days. In arriving at their decision, the Raceday Stewards acknowledged the IHRB Veterinary report, however they were still satisfied that a breach of Rule 212A.(ii) had occurred.'

Evan Ferguson completes loan switch to Roma
Republic of Ireland striker Evan Ferguson has completed his loan move to Serie A giants Roma from Brighton & Hove Albion. The 20-year-old Meath man will wear the number 11 shirt for the Italians, who have also an option to buy. Ferguson had scored four goals in 18 senior appearances for his country since his debut in 2022. The former Bohemians forward's club career had stalled at the Seagulls after a series of injuries, with a short spell at West Ham in the second half of last season falling disappointingly flat. Seagulls head coach Fabian Hurzeler said: "Evan had a challenging period across the past season and a half, and it has been one disrupted by niggling injury issues, which hasn't allowed him a run of games. "He is over those injuries and has come back in great shape. Now he really wants to play regularly. This is an exciting opportunity in a strong league and with the prospect of European football." Welcome to Roma, Evan! 🇮🇪 💛❤ #ASRoma — AS Roma English (@ASRomaEN) July 23, 2025 Ferguson will become the first Irish player to represent the three-time Italian champions at senior level. Irish Under 21 international Kevin Zefi is expected to leave the club this summer, having played for Roma's U20 side. Roma finished fifth in the league last season under Claudio Ranieri, who was subsequently replaced by former Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini on a three-year contract. Around one hundred fans showed up at Rome's Ciampino Airport to welcome Ferguson when he arrived in the city on Sunday.
