Altria beats quarterly estimates on robust nicotine pouch demand

July 30 (Reuters) - Tobacco giant Altria (MO.N), opens new tab beat Wall Street estimates for second-quarter revenue and profit on Wednesday, helped by strong demand for its on! nicotine pouches. The Richmond, Virginia-based company has been banking on its portfolio of smoking alternatives, such as nicotine pouches, to offset the impact from lost sales as more consumers move away from traditional cigarettes and chewing tobacco. While sales of Altria's vape brand, NJOY, were halted earlier this year amid a patent dispute, higher growth at its on! segment helped make up for the collapse in sales. The company had said in April NJOY will not return to the market this year, booking a hefty impairment related to its vape unit. Widespread sales of unregulated disposable vapes, mostly from China, have eaten into vape and traditional tobacco businesses in the U.S. However, Altria said it anticipates a limited benefit from higher seizures of such devices. The company's quarterly revenue including excise taxes rose 0.2% to $5.29 billion from a year ago, compared with analysts' average estimate of a 1.8% decline to $5.18 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG Its adjusted second-quarter profit of $1.44 per share beat estimates of $1.39. Shipment volume for on! nicotine pouches rose 26.5%, compared with a 13.7% increase a year ago. Rival Philip Morris International's (PM.N), opens new tab shares suffered last week after shipments of its ZYN nicotine pouches - by far the No. 1 pouch brand in the U.S. - came in below expectations. Shipment volume for Altria's smokeable tobacco business fell 10.2% during the second quarter, compared with a 13% decline a year ago. The company recorded a non-cash, pre-tax charge of $354 million during the quarter, related to an impairment of trademark for its Skoal smokeless tobacco. It did not give a reason for the impairment. Altria expects annual adjusted earnings of $5.35 to $5.45 per share, compared with previous expectations of $5.30 to $5.45.

Japanese firm completes takeover of Highland free port

Mitsui, an international trading firm, has bought the Port of Nigg and its fabrication arm from Global Energy for an undisclosed sum. Located in Easter Ross on the Cromarty Firth, the site is seen as vital to the expansion of offshore wind and its supply chain and is one of Scotland's two "green free ports". Mitsui, a Tokyo-based firm which specialises in engineering, energy, shipping and port operations, took a 25.5% stake in Global Energy in 2012. READ MORE: SNP to press ahead with Palestine recognition vote as Labour 'bargaining' with Israel After completing the takeover deal, he company said it plans to expand the manufacturing capacity at the port and hopes to invest in infrastructure to help support both the on and offshore industry. The Port of Nigg has received around £120 million worth of investment, including some public funding, in the past 14 years to upgrade its facilities. In March, Highlands and Islands Enterprise announced £10m in funding to create a new heavy-duty quayside. At the time Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes said: 'This is a prime example of how we and our enterprise agencies are focused on stimulating investment and targeting projects that will in turn act as a catalyst to further investment, jobs and opportunities. 'Given its location and being part of Inverness and Cromarty Firth green freeport, the Port of Nigg is strategically important to the growth and success of the offshore wind sector.' She added: 'An investment of this nature sends a clear signal to investors that Scotland is open for business.' Nigg received its green freeport status in January 2023, alongside Forth Ports, and is able to offer tax incentives and lower tariffs within the zones they cover. However, green freeports have commitments to meeting net zero targets and supporting fair work practices.

Plans unveiled for new pub in Edinburgh by Newbarns brewery

The co-owners of the Edinburgh-based brewery Newbarns and the team behind The Palmerston have unveiled their plans to revive the existing The Cooper's Rest pub on Easter Road, Leith, into a cosy destination for locals and visitors alike. Closed since 2015, the two teams plan to restore Cooper's Rest to its former glory by merging the 'warmth and welcoming atmosphere' of a pub with quality drinks and food. Plans for the venue include a menu which will focus on modern takes on classic comfort dishes, with the team working closely with farmers and producers to source local and seasonal produce. James Snowdon, co-owner of The Palmerston along with Lloyd Morse, said he can't wait to bring his idea of a pub with excellent food and with an atmosphere to match. He said: 'The seed for the pub was planted way back in 2022. Through getting to know Gordon and the team at Newbarns, we realised we're all gagging for Edinburgh to have a proper pub which serves proper pub food. 'Edinburgh is a city full of great pubs, but every 'gastropub' in the city is really a restaurant - you can't go into them and sit at the bar all afternoon drinking pints. 'During the last few years we've discovered we have similar ideas of what we love in a pub and want to bring that to Edinburgh: exceptional food, quality drinks and a welcoming atmosphere for locals and visitors alike'. (Image: The Cooper's Rest) The Cooper's Rest plans to open early-2026 with Newbarns co-owner Gordon McKenzie, along with Emma McIntosh, saying the partnership between the two [[Edinburgh]] businesses feels just right. He said: 'At Newbarns, everything we do starts with that feeling you get around a pub table with friends – the easy camaraderie, the good conversation. 'So often those friendships, and those tables, have included the brilliant people from The Palmerston so this collaboration at The Cooper's just feels right. 'We can't wait to share our passion for exceptional food, great beer, and truly good company, bringing everyone together under one roof.'
