Donald Trump Doesn't Rule Out Pardoning Ghislaine Maxwell
Asked if he would pardon or commute the sentence of Maxwell, sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's onetime girlfriend, Trump sure didn't say 'no.'
'I'm allowed to do it,' he told reporters. He then claimed that 'it's something I've not thought about.'
Presumably, Trump wouldn't pardon Maxwell, who was convicted for helping Epstein sexually abuse underage girls, unless it benefited him personally — perhaps by buying her silence or otherwise somehow distracting the country from his own past relationship with Epstein.
Trump deflected further when pushed on the subject.
'I don't want to talk about that,' he said.
Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence at a federal prison in Tallahassee, Florida. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche met with her on Thursday in an attempt to quell a firestorm over the Trump administration's backtracking on promises to release additional records from the Epstein investigation.
'What I do want to say is that Blanche is a great attorney,' Trump told reporters.
Then he launched into one of his classic redirects and encouraged the press not to investigate his own connection to Epstein, but everyone else's. He proceeded to list names that may or may not be in the Epstein files and speculated about 'hedge fund guys' and former President Bill Clinton going to Epstein's island.
(Clinton has denied knowing anything about the 'terrible crimes' allegedly committed by the billionaire financier.)
In the same back and forth, Trump also denied that he'd written a lewd birthday message for Epstein that featured a drawing of a naked woman and remarked how 'enigmas never age' while wishing that 'may every day be another wonderful secret.' The Wall Street Journal published a copy of the note last week.

Fort Pierce City Commission seat vacated by James Taylor may sit empty until 2026
FORT PIERCE — The city plans to hold a special election Nov. 4 to replace City Commissioner James Taylor, who resigned just hours before a special meeting July 28. As the meeting to plan his replacement was called to order, Taylor sat in the St. Lucie County Jail in lieu of $360,000 bond, charged with 24 felony counts related to an alleged explicit internet relationship with a teenage girl. If a runoff is needed after the November election, residents of District 2 could go until early next year without full representation on the City Commission. According to a preliminary plan, which commissioners will have to approve at their Aug. 4 regular meeting, candidate qualifying would run from noon Aug. 15 to noon Aug. 22. The Nov. 4 special election would be followed by a Jan. 20 runoff only if there are more than two candidates and no one receives a majority of the vote. What will a tie vote mean? In the meantime, with a four-member commission, any votes that split 2-2 will fail. The election will be open only to registered voters in District 2, and candidates must have lived in District 2 for at least two years in order to qualify, City Clerk Linda Cox said. By the time they vote Aug. 4, commissioners will have to decide how they want to run the election, which Cox estimated would cost the city about $60,000. At first, commissioners said they would like to see the election run the same as a normal election. However, they later expressed openness to not opening the two precincts with the smallest numbers of registered voters and to opening a precinct for early voting, as both the normal early-voting locations are in District 1. Cox said she would work with Supervisor of Elections Gertrude Walker between now and Aug. 4 to see how those changes would impact the cost. After Commissioner Arnold Gaines asked where the money for the election would come from, saying the City Commission has "fought over every penny" during the ongoing budget process, Cox said that has yet to be determined. City Manager Richard Chess said the cost may be able to be split over multiple fiscal years, while Commissioner Michael Broderick suggested using emergency funds, likening the situation to a natural disaster. "This is a disaster," Broderick said. Presenting a united front Commissioners presented a united front, saying the city will continue to conduct its business. Police in Evanston were first tipped off to the alleged relationship by the girl's mother in August 2024, while Taylor was in the midst of his campaign for City Commission. Taylor — who won that race with nearly 62% of the vote — was first on St. Lucie County investigators' radar in May, when they were contacted by Evanston police. Michigan Walmart customers used shopping carts and a gun to subdue a man who stabbed 11 people
Walmart Stabbing Suspect Matthew Kolakowski was shopping for fishing gear and snacks with his daughter at a Michigan Walmart over the weekend when he heard an employee yelling 'he's got a knife' followed by sounds of screaming. Then he saw a man rushing toward the checkout counter. 'All of a sudden I see him pop up and I swear we locked eyes for a minute and I yelled at my daughter, 'Stay here.' So I just took off running,' Kolakowski said, recalling the moment he decided to confront the man accused of stabbing 11 people at the Traverse City store on Saturday. Bradford Gille was charged Monday with terrorism and 11 counts of attempted murder. Police said they had no apparent motive for the violent attack carried out with a 3 1/2 inch (nearly 9-centimeter) knife. The actions of Kolakowski and some other men drew effusive praise from Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea. Overnight, the strangers became online celebrities for their heroics as a video showing the confrontation spread swiftly on social media. Kolakowski said that as he followed the man out of the store, he saw him plunge his blade into an older woman outside. Having no weapon himself, Kolakowski grabbed a shopping cart, hoping to knock the man down as he gave chase. 'He just ran right behind her and buried his knife into her back, right in front of me,' Kolakowski said. 'He pulled the knife out of her and went to take off, then stopped and hesitated and turned around like he was going to go after her again. That's when he noticed me with the grocery cart ... I just went as hard as I could and just got him on his ankles with the grocery cart from behind.' Kolakowski, a 39-year-old disabled veteran, was quickly joined by another man with a shopping cart, stopping the man later identified by authorities as Gille. A third man pointed a gun toward the man, repeatedly demanding he drop the knife. He eventually put the knife down and Kolakowski said he jumped on the man, restraining him until police quickly arrived. 'Honestly, I didn't hesitate at all,' said Kolakowski, speaking from his home in nearby Kent City. Though he was wary of being stabbed himself, he said, 'I just kept going.' Shea said the 11 victims were men and women ranging in age from 29 to 84, including one Walmart employee. All were expected to survive, officials said. Authorities said Gille, 42, has a history of mental health problems and has been arrested or ticketed numerous times in the Petoskey, Michigan, area since 2001. He has also received jail sentences for assault and domestic violence-related offenses. In 2017, he was found not guilty by reason of insanity after being charged with damaging a burial vault and tipping over grave markers at a Ptoskey cemetery. And police in Petoskey reported speaking twice with Gille in recent days about loitering. In a statement Monday, the Petoskey Department of Public Safety said the agency sought and received a court order Friday to place Gille in protective custody, deeming him a risk to himself or others. But they could not find him — until the Traverse City stabbings occurred. Gille's mother told the Petoskey News-Review in 2007 that her son had been in a long-term cycle of mental illness. Beverly Gille at that time praised police and judges, whom she said were trying to help him. 'He's fine when he's on his medication,' she told the newspaper. 'The problem is his illness tells him that he is fine and doesn't need to take his medication.' At his arraignment Monday, Gille appeared agitated and seemed to suggest he was homeless. A not-guilty plea was entered for him, and bond was set at $100,000. Kolakowski said that as he and the other shoppers surrounded the man in the Walmart parking lot, it was clear that something was not right. He described the man as wild-eyed and sweating heavily and describing those in the store as 'bad, like he was making an excuse why he stabbed everybody." Kolakowski brother-in-law, Chris O'Brien, who recorded the video, said the 'crazy' scene unfolded incredibly fast and that Kolakowski's actions surely prevented several more stabbings. 'It's his courage that is the craziest part. It was something to witness,' he said. 'A guy was stabbing people and we were just next on his list if we didn't do something right,' O'Brien said. Shots fired in Manhattan, police officer shot
NEW YORK — A police officer and two civilians have been shot in midtown Manhattan in an active shooter situation, police said. The shooting happened at Park Ave. and 51st St. around 6:30 p.m., cops said. Police sources say that the man entered the building at 345 Park Ave. and started shooting, striking a police officer and two civilians. The building is the headquarters of global investment company Blackstone. Mayor Eric Adams warned New Yorkers to avoid the area in a post reading, 'New Yorkers: there is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now. Please take proper safety precautions if you are in vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street.' The police officer and one civilian are in critical condition at Bellevue, a source said. The other civilian is seriously hurt but stable. The FBI is responding to the situation. The shooter was reportedly wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with a rife. _______
