Thoothukudi Collector pays tribute ahead of Veerapandiya Kattabomman fest

The Hindu09-05-2025
Thoothukudi District Collector K. Elambahavath on Friday paid homage to the statue of Veerapandiya Kattabomman in Panchalankurichi ahead of Veerapandiya Kattabomman Vizha (fest) celebrated annually on the last Friday of the Tamil month of Chithirai.
Veerapandiya Kattabomman, renowned for his valour and honour, fought against the British in the latter part of the 18th century. The Tamil Nadu government commemorates his legacy each year through this festival, during which his descendants, members of his clan and public pay respect to the statue of Veerapandiya Kattabomman.
In addition to the fest, special pujas have been organised at Veersakka Devi Amman Temple between May 8 and May 11, the ancestral deity of Kattabomman. Crowds of people have begun gathering for the temple festivities, prompting authorities to strengthen security across the district to prevent untoward incidents. A curfew has also been enforced under the section 163(1) of the Bharatiya Nayaya Suraksha Sanhita 2023 act from 6 p.m. on May 8 (Thursday) to 6 a.m. on May 11 (Sunday).
According to this order, public gatherings of five or more persons have been prohibited during this period. The people participating in the temple fest from Thoothukudi and other districts have been strictly instructed not to carry dangerous and objectionable weapons such as swords, knives, machetes etc,.
Thoothukudi District Superintendent of Police Albert John further advised the people to obtain prior permission from the authorities for any other processions and festivities.

Founded by Savarkar, revived by Godse's niece: Abhinav Bharat ‘vindicated', hails Malegaon acquittals

Originally floated by freedom fighter V D Savarkar in 1904 to carry out an armed struggle against the British and revived in post-Independence India, the Abhinav Bharat hit the headlines almost two decades ago after some of its members, including Lt Col Prasad Purohit, were accused of masterminding the 2008 Malegaon blasts. On Thursday, as a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court acquitted all the accused in the case, Milind Joshirao, a Pune resident who claims to be the organisation's head, said false allegations had been levelled against the outfit and the term 'saffron terror' was coined. 'The judgment shows that all allegations against Abhinav Bharat and Hindus arrested in the bomb blast case were false,' he said, hailing the verdict. Savarkar, also a Hindutva ideologue, had dissolved Abhinav Bharat in 1952, saying there was no need for an armed struggle in independent India and urged the youth to join the defence forces to serve the country. It was revived only in 2006 in Raigad by his brother Narayan's daughter-in-law Himani Savarkar, along with a group of historians, intellectuals, and activists. Himani, who later became the President of the revived organisation, is the daughter of Gopal Godse, the elder brother of Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse. According to Himani, Abhinav Bharat, which was registered as a Trust on February 9, 2007, was revived to 'generate a sense of patriotism among youth,' create awareness on social issues and apprise them about 'injustice being meted out against Hindus'. The organisation aimed to fulfil its aims through lectures, discussions and seminars in colleges and public platforms within and outside Maharashtra. According to investigators who probed the Malegaon blasts, the Abhinav Bharat was an 'organised crime syndicate' whose members had been active since 2003. It was alleged that Lt Col Purohit, who was accused of procuring explosives from Kashmir for the attack, played a key part in the organisation's revival. Investigators also claimed that the Abhinav Bharat wanted to 'turn India into a Hindu Rashtra called Aryavart and place a government-in-exile' as its members were 'dissatisfied with the Constitution'. Its members were also accused of planning to train people in guerrilla warfare to eliminate people who opposed a Hindu Rashtra. 'It is unfortunate that an organisation undertaking constructive activities for society was harassed,' Purohit said after the verdict. Maharashtra ATS chargesheet claimed that Himani, in her statement, mentioned that Purohit discussed the Malegaon location during a meeting in Bhopal for taking revenge against Muslims. However, in a January 2009 interaction with The Indian Express she denied making any such mention in her statement during the probe. She passed away in 2015. Her son Satyaki Savarkar said his mother 'suffered a lot due to this case as false narratives of saffron terrorism were propagated'. Another acquitted member of the Abhinav Bharat, Ajay Rahirkar, was the treasurer of the organisation at the time of his arrest in 2008. Investigators alleged that Rahikar's house in Erandwane of Pune served as the 'head office' of Abhinav Bharat. However, Rahikar's advocate Nitin Apte said the body is a registered Trust and was not banned by the government. Joshirao, whom the NIA declared hostile, said though Abhinav Bharat was branded as an extremist outfit and its documents were seized, it continued to work in the 'national interest'. 'I had told the court on record how I was threatened by ATS officers to implicate RSS leaders and (Uttar Pradesh CM) Yogi Adityanath,' he said.

Wallabies' Tizzano absent from third Lions Test after online abuse

Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt says he left flanker Carlo Tizzano out of his squad for the third British and Irish Lions Test over concern for his neck and after a week of online abuse. Wallabies' Tizzano absent from third Lions Test after online abuse Tizzano was swept up by controversy in the final minutes of the second Test in Melbourne when he was cleaned out of the last ruck of the game with a hit to the neck by the Lions' Jac Morgan. The Welshman's actions went unpunished by the officials, to Australia's fury, and Hugo Keenan's resulting 79th minute match-winning try was allowed to stand. In the aftermath, Tizzano was accused of "diving" to try and win a penalty when he sprung backwards and fell to the ground in dramatic fashion. Former Lions skipper Sam Warburton said the Australian "made a real meal of it". "He's had a really tough week, Carlo. He's copped a lot of online abuse," Schmidt told reporters late Thursday. "I've advised Carlo to stay away from the media full stop, and the opinions that are out there." When asked about the issue, Lions coach Andy Farrell said: "Online abuse, it's clear and obvious, it's disgusting. It shouldn't be that way." Schmidt defended the way Tizzano came out of the ruck, saying it was a matter of physics. "There were just over 54 Gs of force that went directly through the neck ... which is enough to cause serious injury, although not to a rugby player who is as well conditioned as Carlo. "But he's probably best just left to take a deep breath. "We are all aware of Newton's third law for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction," Schmidt added. "When that force hits him and the speed of his head collapsing down, he recoiled out the back of the ruck. "I don't think he wanted to recoil like that but that's the nature of force. That there is an equal and opposite reaction." World Rugby this week defended the officials' decision-making during the Test and took issue with Schmidt questioning the governing body's commitment to player safety. The third and final Test is in Sydney on Saturday, with the Lions gunning for a whitewash after winning the first two. mp/tym This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Himanta Sarma On Why NIA Should Probe Case Linked To Congress Leader's Wife

Guwahati: A day after Himanta Biswa Sarma hinted at transferring an ongoing state inquiry - into 'links' between Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi's wife and a Pakistan-based non-governmental organisation - to the anti-terror body National Investigation Agency, the Assam chief minister explained on Thursday why he feels a need for this. Stating that the Assam Police special investigation team (SIT) has been informed that its term will not be extended and it has to wrap up its probe into the case by September 10, Mr Sarma said, "The Assam SIT has a limited scope. We cannot access telephonic interactions beyond two years. But the National Investigation Agency (NIA) can trace conversations till 2010. The Assam SIT has done a good job, but ultimately, the case is related to citizenship. It is the Centre which has to finally take over the investigation." The chief minister had, earlier this year, ordered the registration of a case against a Pakistani national, who is believed to have links with Mr Gogoi's wife Elizabeth Colburn, for "trying to interfere in domestic matters" of the state and the country. Mr Sarma had also said that Ms Colburn will be probed over her alleged links with Pakistan and its intelligence agency ISI. Besides, he has said, she will also be investigated over her alleged participation in the Lok Sabha election campaigns despite being a "British citizen". The Assam SIT had taken over the case and questioned several people. "We will refer the case to the Centre, but not now. We have given a deadline of September 10 to the SIT to wrap up its probe. It will submit a report and I will table that report before the cabinet, which can recommend the case's transfer to NIA," he added. Mr Gogoi has denied the allegations.
