Source: Extremist fighters threaten Iraq-Syria border security

Iraqi security forces detected an unprecedented buildup by 'extremist factions' allegedly seeking to free foreign detainees from prisons near the Iraqi-Syrian frontier, a security source revealed on Saturday.
The source told Shafaq News that Iraqi authorities have launched contingency plans and reinforced border security in response to the increased military activity, adding that joint forces are using thermal cameras and reconnaissance to monitor movements along the shared border.
The official expressed fears that these factions could target high-value detainees held in Syrian camps, particularly Al-Hol, where several foreign commanders of extremist groups are imprisoned.
Meanwhile, Iraq's State Support Alliance—a political bloc in the Council of Representatives comprising five to six deputies that aligns itself with and supports Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani—warned of continued foreign plots to destabilize border regions.
Alliance member Ali Al-Fatlawi revealed to Shafaq News, 'We received intelligence that over 3,000 Afghan, Azeri, and Asian fighters are active in Syria, positioning to exploit vulnerabilities along the Iraqi-Syrian border.'
Recent weeks have seen a rise in militant activity in both Iraq and Syria. Iraqi forces killed two ISIS operatives in Kirkuk last Wednesday, days after a suicide bomber linked to the group detonated explosives inside Mar Elias Church in Damascus.
Observers acknowledge these incidents point to persistent sleeper cells operating on both sides of the border, which officially reopened on June 14. However, they believe the likelihood of ISIS regaining territorial control remains low due to local, regional, and international deterrents.
ISIS captured large swathes of Iraqi territory in 2014, including the provinces of Nineveh, Saladin, and Al-Anbar, before being driven out by late 2017. Rawand N.H. is one of the thousands of Yazidis who were abducted by ISIS in their hometown of Shingal in northern Iraq more than a decade ago. He was freed in Syria nearly two weeks ago and was reunited with family in Duhok province on Sunday. "I have never felt this much joy in my life," he told Rudaw on Sunday, expressing his happiness at being reunited with his family. He added that he spent most of his 11 years in Syria's Raqqa and the vicinity of the city. Rawad is unable to speak in his mother tongue, Kurdish, anymore. He spoke in Arabic in Duhok. His uncle, Haji Hame, thanked Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani for reuniting Rawand with his family. 'We had registered all eight members of the family as martyrs. Thankfully, this one emerged alive,' he told Rudaw after receiving his nephew in Duhok's Batifa. The uncle also noted that the Office of Rescuing Abducted Yazidis, which is affiliated with the Kurdistan Region Presidency, informed him a month ago that they had found his nephew. 'He will live with me because he has no one else left alive,' said Rawand's uncle. Hame also said that 77 members of Rawand's extended family were abducted by ISIS when the group attacked Shingal in 2014, adding that 39 remain unaccounted for. During its assault on Shingal, ISIS abducted 6,417 Yazidi women and children, many of whom were subjected to sexual slavery and forced labor. Although the group was territorially defeated in Iraq by 2017 and in Syria by 2019, it continues to pose a security threat in the region. As of now, nearly 2,600 Yazidis remain missing, according to the Office of Rescuing Abducted Yazidis.

Zelenskyy calls night of 537 Russian strikes ‘most terrifying'
Shafaq News – Kyiv/Moscow On Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned Russia's overnight aerial offensive as the largest of the war, involving more than 530 drones and missiles. "This was one of the most terrifying nights for Ukrainians," Zelenskyy said in a press statement, warning that Moscow was escalating its tactics and pressing for immediate international support. Ukraine's military reported that Russian forces launched 537 aerial threats overnight, including 477 Shahed-type drones and 60 cruise and ballistic missiles, in a coordinated attack targeting multiple regions. Air defenses intercepted 475 targets using fighter jets, mobile launchers, and electronic warfare systems. Strikes were reported across Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Cherkasy, Mykolaiv, and Ivano-Frankivsk provinces, damaging civilian infrastructure—including several university buildings—and injuring at least six people.
