#SHOWBIZ: 'Gantung' reboot impresses
'Gantung: Musketeer Code', fortunately, defies this trend.
Based on the 2018 series 'Gantung' (adapted from Nadia Khan's novel), it largely retains its original protagonists.
The replacement actor is just as good, if not more "macho" than his predecessor.
Make no mistake, while Indonesian heart-throb Randy Pangalila did great as the moody young man Gibbs, his successor Ben Amir's growling voice adds a significantly more "jantan" feel, surpassing many A-list actors.
'Gantung: Musketeer Code' returns to an elite Kuala Lumpur school, where friends Gibbs (Ben Amir), Ray (Ikmal Amry), Troll (Hafreez Adam) and KJ (Brandon Salim) are under suspicion of causing the death of their schoolmate, Ratna (Gita Sucia).
They are blamed by many for Ratna's suicide, especially since three of them (excluding Ray) were known to be at odds with her.
However, there is more than meets the eye.
Despite their common source, viewers can watch the movie independently of the series.
Director Nadia's fresh approach tells the story mostly through flashbacks, seen from the perspective of a now-graduated and successful Ray.
Ray takes viewers back to the tragic episode at his alma mater wit the help of Farah, who is Gibbs's former girlfriend and a passionate feminist despite her past relationship with a male chauvinist.
This movie is the first of Nadia's three 'Gantung' novels, penned over a decade ago, clearly setting up sequels for Ray, Gibbs, KJ and Troll.
Nadia's youth-oriented story, a blend of whodunit, horror, and teen soap opera, can be confusing due to its blurred lines between reality, and Ray and Farah's perceptions or past events.
Both are traumatised by Ratna's death, with Ray still suffering hallucinations.
Nonetheless, these "cool" plot twists enhance the movie's watchability.
This time, Ikmal Amry, praised earlier this year for his villainous role in Syafiq Yusof's 'Soloz', plays a hero still grappling with anger and family issues.
Such intense characters suit this young actor perfectly.
The story effectively anchors itself in Ray's unwavering loyalty to his childhood and college friends, even when they break the law or harm others.
Their mutual "Musketeer Code" means they always have each other's backs.
Ray acts as their moral compass, constantly trying to stop Gibbs, Troll, and KJ from objectifying women or cyberbullying those who mock them online.
Farah is an interesting character due to her contradictory lifestyle, and while Shazia Rozaini is convincing in the role, she needs to show more emotion as her acting can be stiff.
The film features important cameos by household names like Datin Sofia Jane, Chew Kin Wah and Sangeeta Krishnasamy as college teachers; Bront Palarae as the deceased Ratna's brother demanding justice; and Amanda Ang as a concerned parent.
Taufiq Hanafi returns to a sportsman role, a decade after his acclaimed portrayal of footballer Abu in 'Ola Bola The Movie' and 'Ola Bola The Musical'.
Taufiq excels as Sofil, a brash, arrogant basketball player, proving his versatility with both villainous and comedic roles.
'Gantung' is not a simple narrative, rather it explores each character's individual story and personal demons.
At its core, it delivers the timeless message of self-honesty and true friendship amidst life's challenges.
Friendships will inevitably be tested and experience occasional conflicts, but time and truthfulness ultimately heal them.

#SHOWBIZ: Siti enthrals 4,600 concertgoers at Genting Highlands show
GENTING HIGHLANDS: Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin's enduring star power was undeniable last night as approximately 4,600 concertgoers packed Resorts World Genting's Arena of Stars for her performance. Despite having staged three concerts last year, including one with Indonesian singer Judika in December, fans clearly can't get enough of her, as evidenced by the sold-out venue. Siti graciously thanked her devoted fans who have supported her from the start, while also acknowledging those attending for the very first time. "I'd like to thank everyone for coming, especially those who are watching me for the first time. I hope this won't be the first and the last, okay?" she told the cheering crowd between songs. Among the attendees were 14 fans who had travelled all the way from Medan, Indonesia, specifically for the concert. Last night's concert was the first of a two-night engagement titled 'Violet Skies: Dato' Sri Siti Nurhaliza Live In Arena Of Stars', with another performance scheduled for this evening. During the slightly over two-hour show, 46-year-old Siti performed 26 songs. She was joined on stage by special guests, starting with her nephew, Ahmad Daiyan, followed by Noh Salleh from the band Hujan. Their duet began with the Indonesian classic 'Bengawan Solo', followed by 'Rahsia Tuhan', before they launched into Hujan's upbeat hit, 'Pagi Yang Gelap'. Paying homage to the Nineties' rock era, Siti also delivered three popular rock numbers: BumiPutra Rockers' 1999 hit 'Seribu Tahun Takkan Mungkin', Fotograf's 1992 song 'Di Alam Fana Cintamu', and Medicine's 1999 track 'Tika Dan Saat Ini'. These renditions were met with thunderous applause from the audience.

Meet Malaysia's latest pop yeh-yeh group LEV, a group of three unleashes Malaysia's own-styled song in "Aku Bukan Bosan"
New music group, LEV, has released their debut single titled 'Aku Bukan Bosan', which is now available on all digital streaming platforms. The trio who got together in 2022 have aims following the footsteps of the Malaysian top pop yeh-yeh band Masdo. They are also singing under the Empayar Masdo label and are also now considered the group Masdo's top protege. Masdo are currently Malaysia's top pop yeh-yeh band since the heydays of the 60s and they made an excellent foray into Indonesia. Just like Masdo, LEV are presenting their music based on Malaysia's 60s pop genre and composed according to current tastes. LEV consists of three members: Leo Azman (vocalist, composer, and lyricist), Riz (guitarist) and Kecik (bass player,) and they are aiming to make a big impression in the Malaysian music industry. 'Aku Bukan Bosan' was entirely composed by Leo Azman, while production, mixing and mastering were completed by Andi, a member of the Indonesian band Fourtwnty. The recording process was carried out at Bijanfx Studio, involving five draft phases over two weeks before the final version was finalized. This song raises the theme of the sacrifices of men who are far from their families to earn a living. It touches on the issue of trust in long-distance relationships and the misunderstandings that often arise due to time and communication constraints. According to Andi, as the producer, this song brings a narrative that is close to the reality of society. 'We want this song to represent the voices of those who are rarely heard. Not everyone is good at expressing themselves, but music can speak for them,' he said. Before the official launch, LEV introduced this song to the public through several performances in conjunction with the 10-Year Journey to Masdo, which took place in several locations around Selangor & Kuala Lumpur. The performances served as an initial platform to introduce LEV's musical identity to a wider audience. The launch of 'Aku Bukan Bosan' also opens a new chapter for LEV as a newcomer group that presents works based on reality, without excessive dramatic elements. With a simple musical approach and lyrics based on real experiences, LEV is seen as one of the new names that deserves attention. AKU BUKAN BOSAN (quick notes - trivia) 1. "Aku Bukan Bosan" -- Composer & Lyricist: Leo Azman 2. This single is the debut work from LEV since their establishment on May 13, 2022. This song highlights the story of the sacrifice of a man who was forced to leave his family temporarily to find a livelihood to support his loved ones. It is an expression of the heart that asks for trust to be given, not doubt. Not because of looking for another love, but because of the determination to ensure that every family's dream can be fulfilled. The group's message for fans: "For the fighters out there, continue your struggle. Never give up. And for the wives, trust your husbands. If messages are not returned, if calls are not picked up — know that they are fighting, not bored." 3. The lyrics of this song are inspired by the reality of men who are forced to stay away from their families to find a livelihood, not because of boredom, but because of responsibility.

Ejen Ali 2: Hit movie scores big in Indonesia as versatile actor Azman Zulkiply continues to shine as voice actor
Ejen Ali The Movie 2 (EATM2), the highly anticipated sequel to Malaysia's hit animated feature, is enjoying a strong run in Indonesia, with its theatrical release now extended to 240 cinemas, more than triple the number when it premiered on June 27. In just five days, the film has attracted over 174,000 moviegoers of all ages, especially children, marking a significant milestone for the homegrown animation in a competitive entertainment market. WAU Animation chief executive officer and EATM2 director Usamah Zaid Yasin said the team had not expected such an overwhelming reception, particularly as Indonesia does not operate a 'mandatory screening' system like Malaysia. "We entered the market at the perfect time during the school holidays, backed by strong local partnerships, distributors and a communications agency that truly understands the Indonesian audience,' he told Bernama. Usamah attributed the film's early momentum to the loyal Ejen Ali digital fanbase in Indonesia, cultivated over the years through YouTube and social media, alongside strategic collaborations with Indonesian animation studios and a soundtrack feature with popular local band Nidji. He said these localisation efforts gave the film a familiar touch and a sense of ownership for Indonesian viewers, and he expects viewership to continue rising in the coming weeks. With momentum building, EATM2 is expected to debut in Cambodia, following recent successful runs in Singapore and Brunei, cementing its growing regional footprint. In another development, there is no doubt that Rizwan's character in Ejen Ali The Movie 2 (EATM2) is one of the characters that most captured the audience's attention, not only because of his solid fighting skills, but also because of his cool appearance and gruff voice. Behind this character stands the figure of a very experienced and versatile actor, Azman Zulkiply. Interestingly, Rizwan is not the only character voiced by Azman in EATM2. He also plays the roles of General Rama and Viktor, each representing three different racial backgrounds, namely Malay, Chinese, and Indian. Of course, it is not easy to bring a character to life with different speaking styles and accents, but Azman said he loved the experience. "This is my proudest achievement in my career. (EATM2) What a ride, the opportunity to play three characters was an amazing experience," said Azman in a special interview. "I have many friends. Malays, Chinese and Indians, they are amazing people. That is why this country is so great. It is my utmost honour that I could voice over for all three characters. "I thank the EATM 2 team for giving me this opportunity, it is something I will never forget," added Azman. Even more impressive is that Azman has been voicing these three characters for almost a decade, spanning more than half of his career in voice acting, and it also makes it easier for him to delve deeply into each character and give each one a unique touch. "Being involved here is one of the happiest moments of my career. I'm so glad EATM 2 is also doing so well in many countries besides Malaysia. The support is wonderful and I hope we keep on going for more," Said Azman. For the record, EATM 2 is produced by WAU Animation in collaboration with Primeworks Studios (PWS). The film, which follows the story of a 12-year-old boy who accidentally becomes a spy, has grossed nearly RM60 million to date, with more regional releases in the pipeline.
