Ryan Louis Mosqueda, from Michigan, fired dozens of rounds at the entrance of the facility just before am local time and US Border Patrol agents returned fire, McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez told reporters.
A McAllen police officer was shot in the knee during the exchange of fire and was taken to hospital, Rodriguez said.
The US Department of Homeland Security said a Border Patrol employee was also injured.
Police found additional assault firearms and more ammunition in Mosqueda's car, which was parked nearby, Rodriguez added.

'There were many, many dozens of rounds fired by the suspect towards the building and agents in the building,' he said.
Writing, thought to be Latin, was spray-painted on the side of the car but Rodriguez did not provide details of what it said or whether it gave any indication of the motive for the attack.

Woman at son's murder trial recounts finding husband's decapitated corpse
The mother of a Pennsylvania man accused of shooting and beheading his father described from the witness box on Monday that she found Michael F. Mohn's body in a first-floor bathroom. 'I believe I screamed,' Denice Mohn said through tears as Justin D. Mohn's murder trial began in a suburban Philadelphia courtroom. 'I was screaming out front. I think I dialled 911.' She testified that she had seen her husband when she had been home for lunch earlier. 'I said goodbye,' she said. 'And I said I'll see you later.' Justin Mohn, 33, is accused of killing his father and posting video of his severed head online – and calling for others to help him try to overthrow the US government. He faces charges of murder, abuse of a corpse, terrorism-related crimes and other offences for the January 2024 killing of his father at the Levittown home where the three lived. Denice Mohn testified that she and her husband had been offering financial support and guidance as Justin Mohn looked for a job. She described her husband's relationship with him as a 'father-son relationship'. During the first few hours of the trial, prosecutors played 911 audio calls from the night Michael Mohn was killed, with a woman screaming in the background.

US will try to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia before his trial, Justice Department says
The US government would initiate deportation proceedings against Kilmar Abrego Garcia if he is released from prison before he stands trial on human smuggling charges in Tennessee, a Justice Department lawyer told a federal judge in Maryland on Monday. The disclosure by US lawyer Jonathan Guynn contradicts statements by representatives for the Justice Department and the White House, who said last month that Abrego Garcia would stand trial and possibly spend time in an American prison before the government moves to deport him. Guynn made the revelation during a federal court hearing in Maryland, where Abrego Garcia's American wife is suing the Trump administration over his mistaken deportation in March and trying to prevent him from being expelled again. Guynn said US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement would detain Abrego Garcia once he is released from jail and send him to a 'third country' that is not his native El Salvador . However, Guynn said he did not know which country that would be. Abrego Garcia became a flashpoint over US President Donald Trump's immigration policies when he was deported in March to a notorious megaprison in El Salvador. The Trump administration violated a US immigration judge's order in 2019 that shielded Abrego Garcia from deportation to his native country because he is likely to face persecution there by local gangs that terrorised his family. Facing increasing pressure and a Supreme Court order, the Trump administration returned Abrego Garcia last month to face federal human smuggling charges. Abrego Garcia's lawyers have characterised the case as 'preposterous' and an attempt to justify his erroneous deportation.
