RIT Dubai study shows improvement in academic performance with integration of AI and robotics

Zawya2 days ago
Dubai, UAE: A study conducted by researchers from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) of Dubai has revealed the positive impact of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics into education at elementary school level. The groundbreaking project used a personalized AI-powered robot to interact with students directly, resulting in an average 8% improvement in academic performance, versus outcomes from human teaching. Led by Dr. Jinane Mounsef, Chair of the university's Electrical Engineering and Computing Sciences Department, the research highlighted the potential of personalization in robotic tutoring in a real-world educational setting.
Combining cognitive and emotional assessment to deliver tailored educational experiences, the tutoring system was tested with a group of grade four school students studying mathematics. In addition to measuring the speed and accuracy of a student's performance, the robot conducted real-time facial expression analysis to determine the learner's state of mind. The metrics were combined to classify students into three categories: Proficient Students (Prof.S), Meeting-Expectations Students (MES), and Developing Students (DVS). These classifications were then used to deliver customized learning content, motivational messages, and constructive feedback to the students.
The robot, known as Duet, employed powerful machine learning algorithms and the ROS framework to predict a student's proficiency level with 100% accuracy through indicators such as test scores, task completion time, and emotional engagement. It was then able to adjust the challenges and learning materials dynamically to suit each student's needs. The process also incorporated feedback mechanisms for participants to share their thoughts on the experience of learning through robotics and AI.
Explaining the rationale and findings of the research, Dr. Mounsef said, 'We wanted to explore whether personalization enhances the effectiveness of a robotic tutor in improving learning outcomes. To do this, we considered how engagement and academic performance were impacted by the personalization of robotic tutoring and how the results compared to a human teacher, which serves as a benchmark for evaluating the system's impact. Through post-diagnostic exams we found that the experimental group of students using the AI-robot system showed a significant improvement rate over the control group. This demonstrates that such systems can provide a powerful tool to improve efficiency and augment education outcomes.'
The research was the subject of an academic paper entitled, 'CARE: towards customized assistive robot-based education', authored by Dr. Mounsef, alongside RIT Dubai graduate student, Nafisa Maaz, and Assistant Professor at Lebanese American University Beirut, Dr. Noel Maalouf. The paper was published by Frontiers in Robotics and AI, a world-leading, multidisciplinary scientific journal.
Building on the project, Dr. Mounsef is now preparing to collaborate with colleagues at RIT New York to develop an AI-powered social robot. She concluded, 'We aim to take forward our work in cognitive development to explore the use of robotics in emotional intelligence. This will involve deploying a human-looking robot that can interact with students on a daily basis to ask questions, gather data and ultimately make recommendations that can help to address their concerns.'

AI giant Nvidia makes history as first $4 tn company

Shortly after the stock market opened, Nvidia, which is led by electrical engineer Jensen Huang, vaulted as high as $164.42, giving it a valuation above $4 trillion before retreating slightly. "The market has an incredible certainty that AI is the future," said Steve Sosnick of Interactive Brokers. "Nvidia is certainly the company most positioned to benefit from that gold rush." Nvidia has now attained a market value greater than the GDP of France, Britain or India, a testament to investor confidence that AI will spur a new era of robotics and automation, potentially boosting productivity while also challenging incumbent sectors and companies. The California chip company's latest surge is helping to drive a recovery in the broader stock market, even as Nvidia itself outperforms major indices. Part of this is due to relief that President Donald Trump has walked back his most draconian tariffs, which pummeled global markets in early April. Even as Trump has announced new tariff actions in recent days, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq have lingered near records. "You've seen the markets walk us back from a worst-case scenario in terms of tariffs," said Angelo Zino, technology analyst at CFRA Research. While Nvidia still faces US export controls to China as well as broader tariff uncertainty, the company's deal to build AI infrastructure in Saudi Arabia during a Trump state visit in May showed there was also potential upside in Trump's trade policy. "We've seen the administration using Nvidia chips as a bargaining chip," Zino said. Bullish on 2026 Nvidia's latest surge to $4 trillion marks a new threshold in a fairly consistent rise over the last two years as AI enthusiasm has built. In 2025 so far, the company's shares have risen 20 percent, whereas the Nasdaq has gained six percent. The Taiwan-born Huang has wowed investors with a series of advances, including its core product: graphics processing units (GPUs), which are foundational to many of the generative AI programs pursued throughout the technology sector, with applications in autonomous driving, robotics and other cutting-edge domains. The company has also unveiled new advances in recent months, highlighting its Blackwell system, which Huang said in March will soon enable virtually all productions to be "created and brought to life long before it is realized physically." However, Nvidia's winning streak was challenged early in 2025 following revelations about the Chinese DeepSeek venture, which prompted worries that AI investment growth would slow. The company lost some $600 billion in market valuation during this period. Nvidia's Huang has welcomed DeepSeek as a growing presence in technology, while arguing against US export constraints. In the most recent quarter, Nvidia reported earnings of nearly $19 billion despite a $4.5 billion hit from US export controls designed to limit sales of cutting-edge technology to China. The first-quarter earnings period also revealed that momentum for AI remained strong throughout the tech industry. Many of the biggest technology companies -- Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Meta -- are racing each other in the multi-billion-dollar race to win the AI race. A recent UBS survey of technology executives showed Nvidia widening its lead over rivals. Zino said Nvidia's latest surge reflected a fuller understanding of DeepSeek, which has acted as a stimulant to investment for complex reasoning models rather than a threat to Nvidia's business. Nvidia is at the forefront of "AI agents," the current focus in generative AI in which machines are able to reason and infer more than in the past, he said. "Overall the demand landscape has improved for 2026 for these more complex reasoning models," Zino said.

UAE: Buck moon to light up sky on July 10; how to watch the celestial spectacle

The UAE will welcome a Buck moon on July 10, its first full moon since the summer solstice on June 21. The Buck moon occurs in July of every year, and is named according to Native American traditions. UAE residents can look toward the eastern horizon, shortly after moonrise at 7.10pm on July 10, and after moon sets at 5.43am on July 11, according to Khadija Al Hariri, Operations Manager at Dubai Astronomy Group (DAG). The moon may appear larger or more golden at these times, as it is low on the horizon, and appears closer to us from our view point. The name, Buck moon, refers to the season in which male deer (bucks) begin developing their antlers. Although the names are not 'scientific, they're widely used today to make astronomy more relatable and engaging for the public worldwide,' Khadija added. Meteor showers in summer Although summers are generally less active in terms of astronomical activity, the sky will light up with a celestial show that peaks in August. The Perseids is a shower that boasts around 150 to 200 meteors per hour. One of the largest showers of the year, residents may even catch some fireballs. A fireball is a very bright meteor, even brighter than the planet Venus. They occur when larger debris enter the atmosphere; fireballs may explode or even produce sounds, Khadija added. Those watching out for the meteor shower should ideally do so when the moon isn't around — a large bright moon can wash out meteors. Milky way sighting Summer is also the best time to observe the Milky Way. As Khaleej Times reported earlier, the best location to view the Galactic River is Al Qua'a in Abu Dhabi. July offers the clearest view of the galaxy's core. Stargazers can use a sky map app to locate the Scorpius constellation in the southeast as the Milky Way lies next to it. When travelling to the desert or any remote location to observe the sky, it is essential to keep safety in mind. Carry enough water and essential supplies, go with a group, and ensure that someone else knows your route, in case you need assistance.
