Sibisi? Xoki? Ndah?: Captaincy question lingers at Orlando Pirates
Following the departure of regular captain Innocent Maela, the club has not yet announced a new official skipper.
Last season, Nkosinathi Sibisi captained most matches and is a strong contender to take on the role permanently. The experienced defender has stepped up in the absence of Olisah Ndah, Tapelo Xoki, and Maela.
With new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou set to lead his first official match, it remains uncertain who he will choose as captain of Orlando Pirates.
Here are the options for the captaincy:
1. Olisah Ndah
When fit, Ndah has proven to be a calming presence in defence and has saved the Buccaneers on several occasions. However, he hasn't played in over a year, and his fitness remains a concern.
2. Tapelo Xoki
Although not a favourite among some Pirates fans, the 30-year-old has served the club with dignity over the past three years. His commanding presence and leadership on the pitch have often been praised, which is why Jose Riveiro entrusted him with the captaincy for two seasons.
3. Mbekezile Mbokazi
The 19-year-old was given the captain's armband during some pre-season matches, indicating that Ouaddou may see potential leadership qualities in him. While it is unlikely he will be named the new captain, expect him to wear the armband in matches that do not feature Ndah or Sibisi.
According to Soccer Laduma , Sibisi is in pole position for the Orlando Pirates captaincy.
'Sibisi is the logical choice to take over permanently, but it might not be a straightforward appointment,' a source told the publication. 'The coaches are also looking at Ndah and Xoki as part of a leadership group, and it could change depending on who's playing and available. It's a long season, and they need flexibility.

PSL Awards: Orlando Pirates star named the best goalkeeper
Orlando Pirates star goalkeeper Sipho Chaine has walked away with the Goalkeeper of the Season award. Chaine was nominated alongside Ronwen Williams of Mamelodi Sundowns and Elvis Chipezeze of Magesi FC. And in the end, it was the Bucs goalkeeper who proved to have done enough to win the accolades at the PSL Awards on Tuesday. Chaine featured in 25 Betway Premiership matches for Pirates last season, kept 11 cleansheets and conceded just 18. Williams, on the other hand, played just 16 league games for Sundowns, kept 11 cleansheets and conceded just six goals. And despite being tied on the same number of cleansheets with Chaine, the number of games he played disadvantaged him. Chipezeze, who had a fantastic season with 26 league matches under his belt, was let down by the number of goals he conceded (28) despite keeping 10 cleansheets. Nonetheless, he was also one of the winners in the Carling Knockout Player of the Tournament category where he was nominated alongside teammate Edmore Chirambadare and Iqraam Rayners of Sundowns. 'Boy, don't give up': Orlando Pirates star told to fight for his place
Orlando Pirates legend Benedict 'Tso' Vilakazi has urged Bucs striker Tshegofatso Mabasa to fight for his position. The 28-year-old did not start many games last season under Jose Riveiro but could be down the pecking order once again under the new coach. Mabasa is currently on 46 goals for the Buccaneers and needs just seven goals to break Tso's record. Although his goalscoring record is on the line, Vilakazi has urged the Orlando Pirates striker to fight hard to earn his place back in the starting eleven. 'Boy, don't give up; continue to work hard. Yes, I've seen in some pre-season games that you were not that featured like other strikers,' Vilakazi told the Omniaudioafrica YouTube Channel . 'But don't give up. You know what I'm talking about. You know you went to Swallows because you didn't get game time, but you did very well and came back and continued where you left off. For me, it shows character,' the former Orlando Pirates midfielder added. 'You can't keep a good man down. Boy, they can bring 20 other strikers, I'm telling you from my heart, but I don't think they will close you down and make you not be seen. You're a once-special player who knows the poles.' 'So far in my eyes, at Pirates, you're the only striker where even when I'm sleeping and you say, 'Who do you want to put in as a striker?' It's always going to be you.' Orlando Pirates open their 2025/26 season against Polokwane City this Saturday in the MTN8. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
