Messi brace sets up Miami's 2-1 MLS victory over New England
The 38-year-old Argentine star has scored two goals in each of his last four MLS games to become the first MLS player to score multiple goals in four straight games.
He launched the streak in late May with two goals in a 4-2 win over Montreal then had two in a 5-1 victory over Columbus.
Miami then paused their MLS campaign to compete in the Club World Cup — where Messi scored one goal in four matches and Miami were eliminated in the round of 16 by Paris Saint-Germain.
Javier Mascherano's team returned to MLS action on Saturday with a 4-1 victory at Montreal — also fueled by a brace from eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi.
In all Messi has 14 goals in 15 MLS games, putting him two behind leading scorer Sam Surridge, who has appeared in six more games for Nashville than Messi has played this season.
Messi put Miami up 1-0 in the 27th minute at Gillette Stadium, taking advantage of a Revolution miscue and firing a left-footed shot from the heart of the area.
The Argentinian star doubled the score 11 minutes later, charging onto a long through ball from Sergio Busquets and curling a left-footed shot beyond the reach of Slovenian goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic.
Veteran goalkeeper Oscar Ustari also starred for Miami, coming up with six saves before Spaniard Carles Gil managed to put one by him, picking off Tadeo Allende in the 79th minute and rifling in a shot from outside the box.
With the victory Miami climbed from sixth to fifth in the Eastern Conference standings. On 35 points, they are seven points behind leaders FC Cincinnati but with three fewer matches played after their Club World Cup break.

Stewart Leads Liberty To 98-77 Win Over The Fever As Clark Missed Game With Groin Injury
Breanna Stewart scored 24 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and dished out seven assists, leading the New York Liberty to a 98-77 victory Wednesday night over the Indiana Fever, who were without star guard Caitlin Clark. Clark missed the game after injuring her right groin on Tuesday night in the final minute of the game against Connecticut in Boston. Clark has a busy weekend ahead, as Indiana is hosting the WNBA All-Star Game, and she's slated to compete in the 3-point contest and is captain of one of the two teams. Sabrina Ionescu, who will also be in the 3-point contest, added 15 points and nine assists for the Liberty (15-6). Stewart got the Liberty off to a strong start as they led 32-24 after one quarter and were up 15 at the half. The Liberty's All-Star forward had 13 points, nine rebounds, and five assists by the break. New York put the game away in the third quarter behind Stewart, whose three-point play with 3:57 left made it 71-48, much to the delight of the crowd of 17,371. The Fever could only get within 15 the rest of the way. Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana (12-11) with 16 points. The Fever fell to 4-6 when Clark has missed a regular season game this season. New York was still missing star center Jonquel Jones. She said she plans to be back for the Liberty's first game after the All-Star break on Tuesday, which is also against Indiana. She's been sidelined with a sprained ankle for about a month.

Rodrigo De Paul to join Leo Messi at Inter Miami, AP source says
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. Another close friend of Lionel Messi will soon play in South Florida. Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul has agreed to contract terms with Inter Miami, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The 31-year-old De Paul will leave Atlético Madrid – where he's played for four years – for Major League Soccer on a short-term contract with Inter Miami that could potentially lead to a multiyear deal. He had one year left on his contract at Atlético Madrid. ESPN first reported the deal. De Paul and national team buddy Messi hope to continue to elevate Inter Miami, which has reached historic heights since Messi's arrival in 2023. De Paul could be in uniform with Inter Miami in time for the start of Leagues Cup play later this month, though his exact arrival date is uncertain, said the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the signing has not been announced. The deal, which has been in the works for several weeks, comes as negotiations between Messi and Inter Miami on a contract extension remain ongoing. The nine-time Ballon d'Or winner's current contract expires at the end of December, and he is expected to return to the club that he's played with for the past two years. The signing of De Paul adds another veteran with whom Messi already has chemistry along with 37-year-old Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez, 38, and Jordi Alba, 36. De Paul has been a key player for Atlético Madrid since joining the Spanish club from Italian team Udinese in 2021. He helped Argentina win the World Cup in 2022 and was part of Copa America victories in 2021 and 2024. Messi and Inter Miami are coming off a historic season in 2024 in which they finished with the best record in MLS history and the best winning percentage in league history, only to be quickly bounced from the MLS playoffs. They're on track to again be in contention for the MLS Supporters Shield.

Rangers 1b Jake Burger goes on the injured list for 2nd time this season
Texas Rangers first baseman Jake Burger will be on the injured list for the second time this season when the team resumes play after the All-Star break. Texas placed Burger on the 10-day IL on Wednesday because of a left quad strain. The move was retroactive to Sunday, a day after Burger struck out as a pinch-hitter in the 10th inning at Houston. He had exited in the sixth inning of Friday night's opener in the three-game series against the AL West-leading Astros. The Rangers (48-49) didn't immediately make a corresponding roster move. They open a three-game series at home Friday night against Detroit (59-38), which despite a four-game losing streak still has the best record in the major leagues. Burger, who is hitting .228 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs over 75 games in his first season with Texas, played in only 10 games after returning from his previous IL stint. He missed 10 games from June 21 until July 2 because of a left oblique strain. Texas got Burger in a trade from Miami in December. After he hit .190 with three homers and a team-high 32 strikeouts in 100 at-bats his first 30 games, the Rangers sent him briefly to Triple-A Round Rock. In 45 games since returning to the majors he hit .250 with eight homers and 23 RBIs.
