The South African Police Service (Saps) has made a major breakthrough and confirmed that the kidnapped 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi, 19, has been found alive.
The grade 11 pupil from Martie du Plessis School was found alive early on Friday morning, six weeks after he went missing.
Baukudi was found by police following a coordinated rescue operation in the Free State.
Found alive
Police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said they are relieved that Baukudi has been found.
'After weeks of intensive investigation, Kamogelo was safely located and rescued in Wepener in the early hours of this morning, 27 June 2025. During this intelligence-driven operation, five African males aged between 20 and 29 were arrested.

'Three suspects were apprehended at a house in Kanana Location, Wepener, while two others were caught on the road between Kwetla Location and Wepener town — with the victim in their possession,' Makhele said.
Arrests
Makhele added that this brings the total number of arrests in the case to six.
'The first suspect, a 42-year-old police sergeant, who was previously arrested, appeared in court charged with kidnapping and extortion'.
'The suspects face charges related to kidnapping, extortion and will join the police sergeant in court on Monday, 30 June 2025. The investigation continues,' Makhele said.

Kidnapping
A police task team was established to search for Baukudi, who was abducted on Thursday, 5 June 2025, while driving home from school in Vereeniging Drive, Bloemfontein.
Police spokesperson Colonel Brigadier Athlenda Mathe at the time said a complainant identified as Daniel Malebatso arrived at Marti Du Plessis School in Fitchardpark as usual to fetch Baukudi, a grade 11 pupil at the school.
Task team
Mathe said the duo left the school premises with Baukudi, driving the Suzuki Ertiga.
'Whilst driving along Vereeniging Drive Erlichpark Extension, Daniel alleges that they heard a siren sound from behind, and they were pulled over by a White Toyota Hilux GD-6 Double Cab.'
Baukudi's disappearance triggered widespread concern and led to the establishment of a dedicated multidisciplinary task team under the leadership of the Mangaung Metro District Commissioner, Major General Arthur Peter Adams.

He also accused Brown Mogotsi, a 'comrade' of Mchunu, of communicating with suspects, including Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala - a businessman awarded a R360 million police contract in 2024. According to Mkhwanazi, Mogotsi told Matlala the unit was disbanded and that SAPS crime detection head Shadrack Sibiya had taken control of the files. Financial links allegedly tied Mchunu, Mogotsi, and Matlala to political events and a gala dinner. 'This was no accident,' Mkhwanazi said. 'It was a calculated move to shield a criminal syndicate embedded in law enforcement and politics.' Since its establishment in 2018, the task team handled 612 cases and secured over 100 convictions. Mkhwanazi said pressure to disband it intensified after its experts linked weapons to high-profile killings, including cases involving musicians. Shortly after, Mchunu allegedly ordered the unit disbanded and froze intelligence appointments. In a December 2024 letter to National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Fannie Masemola, Mchunu stated the unit, created following the Moerane Commission report, had outlived its usefulness. However, Masemola later denied authorising the unit's closure. Meanwhile, the Black Business Council (BBC) has also weighed in on explosive allegations made by Mkhwanazi against Mchunu, urging him to file formal complaints and open criminal cases where evidence exists. In a statement, the BBC called the claims 'disturbing and serious,' warning they could undermine public trust in law enforcement and the judiciary. 'We encourage Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi to lodge official complaints with the appropriate bodies and open cases where there is evidence of criminality,' the BBC said. 'Failure to address these allegations will erode public confidence and the integrity of law enforcement.' The council urged Ramaphosa to appoint a retired judge with full authority to hear evidence and, where appropriate, initiate prosecutions. The mass killing comes amid a deadly spate of shootings across the Cape Flats over the past two weeks, with at least five mass shootings reported in Mitchells Plain, Kraaifontein, Mfuleni, and Lower Crossroads. The shooting occurred at around 7.15pm at a residence in Reënberg Street. Community leaders have described the incident as a further sign of the escalating violence gripping the area. Chairperson of the Bishop Lavis Community Police Forum (BLCPF), Graham Lindhorst, said the Forum 'condemns in the strongest terms the mass shooting that took place'. 'All the victims were shot in a house in Reenberg Road, Bishop Lavis. This follows an attempted murder earlier in the afternoon, not far from there, and totally unrelated. The BLCPF sends our condolences to the families and friends of the deceased,' he said. Lindhorst called for greater visibility by the police and urged the SAPS management to intervene urgently to restore stability. 'The BLCPF calls on the SAPS to increase visibility and to come forward with a plan that will deal with the gang flare-up currently in the Bishop Lavis precinct,' he said. He also repeated the community's demand for experienced officers to return to the area. 'We further reiterate our call on the SAPS management to bring back the two well-decorated and experienced officers they transferred from Bishop Lavis last year in September, or replace them with equally competent officers. We, as a community, are asking again: is the suffering of our community under violent crime not enough to warrant the attention and intervention of those who are mandated to keep the community safe?' The Bishop Lavis killings are the latest in a wave of mass shootings that have rocked Cape Town. In Lower Crossroads earlier this week, nine young men, one of whom died, were shot by unknown suspects.
