The microwave did most of the cooking in our family. My parents worked, so us kids took care of ourselves by reheating frozen foods from Costco. Vegetables were something we explored on our own. The only time we dined together was Thanksgiving and Christmas, which sounds sad but we just got on with it.
At the weekend, my mom would cook a fry-up. Bacon and eggs, yes, but also Spam. It was always in the pantry and tasted phenomenal sliced and fried – much better than on the grill. My siblings and I could eat it all day. It's probably why I still like breakfast food so much.
After I moved to England [from the US] I was excited to have high tea at the Savoy. As it turns out, a cucumber sandwich can be pretty great. It was lovely: the grand dining room; flights of tea I'd never heard of; getting buzzed off caffeine; the fancy trays; spending far too much on cake.
Oysters with a glass of champagne is cliche, but I don't care – it feels fantastic
Everybody I've made sweet potato pie for in the UK assumes it's savoury, and is delighted to learn it's a dessert made with nearly an entire bag of sugar. It's perfect for Thanksgiving; you think you can't fit more food into your body, then have three slices.
My Greek-Cypriot boyfriend taught me the holy trinity of his cuisine: halloumi, olive oil and lemon. Lemon has the power to transform the taste of anything – even a fried egg is perked up if you finish it with a squeeze. He does the cooking, I load the dishwasher afterwards.
Once you reach your 40s, you change the way you eat. I'm lactose intolerant now, so I lean towards food with ingredients that don't cause me pain, like spinach and eggs on toast rather than cereal in the morning. That said, visits to late-night chicken shops do still happen.
There was a time when I didn't like seafood. Salmon, which is the bacon of the sea, was my gateway drug fish. Now, I even love shellfish. Oysters with mignonette and a glass of champagne is cliche, but I don't care – it feels fantastic.
Comedy runs on crisps. There's always salt and pepper or salt and vinegar on my tour rider – preferably Tyrells or Kettle Chips, because I enjoy life. Prawn cocktail isn't my vibe and I stay away from cheese and onion; I can't be smelling like that when I talk to people on stage.
When I perform at Edinburgh Fringe, I can't fuck with food that might mess up my voice. I know where I am with a tuna baguette from Pret. After a show I'll head to Desi Pakwan; the lamb biryani is excellent and affordable. You must also make a pilgrimage to the Deep Sea chip shop and Storries Home Bakery, because they're open late.
If you drive past people queuing at a Mexican food truck in California, you turn around and come back. The meat will have been marinated for at least a day by someone's abuela [grandmother] and the food will be better – and much cheaper – than any restaurant.
You can get fresh produce in the US, of course, but so much of what you buy in supermarkets is processed. Bread doesn't taste like bread. I hope the UK doesn't go further in the direction of adding unnecessary, unnameable ingredients to food.
My favourite things
Food
It's a toss up between a burrito al pastor and a classic New York bagel with salmon, cream cheese and capers from Zucker's. Those are the two I could eat at the end of my life, then be ready to go.
Drink
Daytime champagne in a bar that has just enough people to have an atmosphere, but not so many that you need to yell to make yourself heard.
Dish to make
Good guacamole is everything. I make it fresh, which is hard to get in the UK, and it has to start with the best avocados. If you get them right, everything else falls into place.

Kensington Palace just shared a photo of Prince William and Prince Charlotte after they made a surprise appearance to support the Lionesses (England's women's soccer team) in their match against Spain for the UEFA Women's EURO 2025 Final this Sunday, July 27. So it looks like even princes and princesses enjoy catching a good game every now and again. The photo, which was shared on Instagram via the official account, @princeandprincessofwales, was accompanied by a simple caption: "Let's go, @lionesses! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿," emphasizing the Prince and Princess's enthusiasm in cheering on their country's team. They're no strangers to the sport, as Prince William is known to be a patron of The Football Association, so it's no surprise he and Princess Charlotte made the trip out to Basel, Switzerland to catch this important match in-person. Crystal Pix/In the photo above, though, the two are seen at their seats looking disappointed as Spain took on a 1-0 lead. If you want to keep up with the score yourself, there are plenty of updates to be found (even as I write this England managed to tie the game!), but I have a feeling that, whatever way it turns out, Prince William and Princess Charlotte will be celebrating the Lionesses making it into this championship match (and we might even catch a few more photos when the game wraps). Mom Is Upset Her Son, 29, Moved Back Home After a Breakup — Disrupting Her Peace: 'I Have Lived Alone for the Last Few Years'

The woman said her son's 9-year-old daughter also visits on weekends, causing more disruptions to her new normal A son's homecoming wasn't exactly what one mom had in mind — or even wanted. In a post on the U.K.-based forum Mumsnet, a woman said her 29-year-old child moved back home with her following a breakup with his girlfriend. The woman added that her son shares a 9-year-old daughter with his ex, so the preteen is often around on weekends too, "Every Saturday overnight till Sunday." Explaining that her son and her granddaughter "take over the living room and TV," the woman said it upsets her because it disrupts her new normal. "I have lived alone for the last few years and enjoy my peace ... [and] I had time for hobbies that have now been put aside [on] the weekends," she wrote. "I feel like saying this is my house, and I don't want it every weekend," the woman continued. "I feel every other weekend is reasonable." In the comments section of the post, many Mumsnet users told the woman that they felt her son needed to be more responsible, given that he is now a parent himself. "He's an adult. Why has he moved back in with you? He needs his own place now that he is a father," said one person, as one other wrote, "Why don't you encourage your son to be a big boy, pay his own way and parent his own child?" Added one another: "He needs to get his own place, and he needs to be considerate that it's your home." The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now! Others, meanwhile, suggested that the woman could find a middle ground by continuing to do her hobbies — but now take part in them with her family members. "Can you involve your granddaughter in doing any with you? Its your house, so you can control the TV and change it so that they aren't just slobbing about ... and are engaging with you, perhaps playing board games, etc." one commenter questioned, also suggesting: "Do you all go out for walks?"
