Swedish major winner Nordqvist named Europe's Solheim Cup captain

Yahoo24-02-2025
Sweden's three-time major winner Anna Nordqvist will be Europe's Solheim Cup captain as they bid to regain the trophy in next year's edition, it was announced on Monday.
The 37-year-old, who has been a member of five winning Solheim Cup sides in her nine appearances, said she was honoured to have been appointed for the biennial match with the United States.
The 2026 renewal takes place at Bernardus Golf, in Cromvoirt, near Eindhoven and 's-Hertogenbosch, in the Netherlands from September 11-13.
"I am so honoured to be appointed as the 2026 European Solheim Cup Captain," said Nordqvist in a statement on the Solheim Cup website.
"Whether we were winning or losing, the Solheim Cup has played such a huge part in my career ever since I made my debut in 2009 in Chicago.
"The friendships I have made, and the memories created during the nine matches I've played, make it so incredibly special to be given the opportunity to be European captain at my tenth Solheim Cup!"
Alexandra Armas, Chief Executive Officer of the Ladies European Tour, said Nordqvist, who has won 17 of her 35 Solheim Cup matches and halved three, would be a "very popular" choice amongst the players.
"She has been such an important member of the European team over the years -– both on and off the course -- and she was excellent in the role of playing vice-captain last year," said Armas.
Nordqvist will bid to regain the cup after the USA won it in 2024, the first time since 2017 they had got their hands on the trophy.
She said that the Bernardus club, which hosted the men's European Tour Dutch Open from 2021-23, would be an ideal stage for the match.
"I feel especially fortunate to be the captain at Bernardus Golf," said Nordqvist, whose last triumph in a major came in the 2021 British Open.
"It's a superb course for match play with fantastic facilities and a stunning clubhouse so we couldn't ask for a better stage for the 20th edition of the Solheim Cup."

Where to watch England vs. Spain: Live stream Women's Euro Final free from anywhere

If you want to find out where to watch England vs. Spain in the 2025 Women's Euro final this Sunday, you've come to the right place. Keep reading to learn the best ways to stream the match around the globe, as well as free options. In terms of sequels, this is about as big as they come. England and Spain last met in the World Cup final two years ago when Olga Carmona's goal was enough to claim a 1-0 victory for La Roja. England, though, are the defending European champions and would dearly love to retain their crown in Basel. The Lionesses got here the hard way, losing their opening match against France and relying on penalty shoot-outs and last-minute winners in the knockouts. That has lent them a certain air of invincibility, however, with Sarina Wiegman's squad seemingly never accepting the idea of calling it quits. Spain's passage has been more comfortable, smashing in 14 goals across their three group games, before overcoming hosts Switzerland and eventually getting past Germany after extra time in the semi-finals. With Esther González and Alexia Putellas leading the tournament scoring, they clearly have the firepower to vanquish England on Sunday. Can La Roja win their first Euro Championship this weekend, or will the Lionesses roar again? Find out below with our guide to watching England vs. Spain live streams. Where to watch England vs. Spain: quick links US: FOX DirecTV MySports (5-day free trial) Sling TV Blue (50% off first month) Fubo Pro (5-day free trial) UK: BBC iPlayer (Free) ITVX (Free) Access streaming anywhere: NordVPN (30-day money-back guarantee) When: Sunday, July 27 at 12 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. BST / 12 a.m. AWST (Mon.) The choice is yours, depending on whose coverage and commentators you prefer. Watching La Roja in Spain? It's free there, too, streaming on the RTVE Play platform. How to watch England vs. Spain from anywhere The 2025 Women's Euros collides with vacation season, which may mean that you're overseas when the final is on and potentially can't find somewhere to watch it. Try to watch on the iPlayer or ITVX, however, and you'll find that you can't due to geographical restrictions. Thankfully, there's technology in the form of a VPN (standing for Virtual Private Network) that lets you stream the action as if you were back home, cheering on from your sofa. You may have already heard of NordVPN, which we rate as the very best VPN out there right now. Olesen has an ace, shoots 67 for a share of the 3M lead with Bhatia

BLAINE, Minn. -- Thorbjorn Olesen aced the par-3 eighth and shot a 4-under 67 on Saturday in the 3M Open for a share of the third-round lead with Akshay Bhatia. Olesen, the 35-year-old Danish player who led after the second round, used a 6-iron on the 209-yard eighth at the TPC Twin Cities. 'It was a back pin. It just felt like I couldn't get there with a 7, so we went for a soft 6-iron,' Olesen said. 'Obviously, took the slope perfectly, a big bonus to see it go in. It's been a long time since I've had one.' Bhatia had a 63 to post first at 18-under 195. 'I chipped in twice, made a lot of putts," Bhatia said. 'A lot of putts lipped in, which was really nice to see. All in all, just a pretty solid round. Felt like I did a pretty good job of playing out of the rough today. I didn't hit it particularly great off the tee, but thankfully greens are soft enough to where you can kind of do that.' Kurt Kitayama matched the tournament and course record with a 60, finishing before Olesen and Jake Knapp teed off in the final group, to get to 17 under. Fellow Japanese player Takumi Kanaya (65) also was 17 under with Knapp (67) and Sam Stevens (66). Olesen followed the hole-in-one with a bogey on No. 9. On the back nine, he birdied Nos. 13-14, three-putted the 15th for bogey, birdied the short par-4 16th and parred the final two. The eight-time European tour winner is chasing first PGA Tour title. 'It's obviously different and it's a big opportunity," Olesen said. 'I'm not going to lie, there's going to be a lot of pressure, but I felt like in my career I've dealt pretty well with pressure. Obviously, the wins on the DP World Tour, but Ryder Cups, also.' Bhatia, the 23-year-old California player with two PGA Tour victories, chipped in from 42 feet for birdie on the fifth and from 55 feet for another birdie on 11. 'I'm just trying to play solid golf and hopefully the cards fall my way tomorrow," Bhatia said. Kitayama matched the tournament mark set by Adam Svensson in the first round. Paul Goydos also has a share of the course record, shooting 60 in the 2017 3M Championship on the PGA Tour Champions. Kitayama had 12 birdies and a bogey. He played the front nine in 7-under 28. 'I was just kind of going out there,' Kitayama said. 'I don't think you really have a number going out into any round, just kind of take what you can get.' Knapp dropped a stroke on the 17th for his lone bogey of the week NCAA winner Michael La Sasso of Mississippi was tied for 16th at 13 under after a 63. The amateur missed the cut last week in the Barracuda Championship.

Ohio State sharp shooter Mathieu Grujicic goes off for Germany in Eurobasket U18 Tourney

The Ohio State basketball team is hoping to get back to the NCAA Tournament after missing the March Madness the last four seasons, and grab some momentum towards getting the program back among the elite in the league and country. If it's going to do it, it'll have to rely on some key returners, but also some new faces that will all have to mesh and become a team rather than a collection of individuals like what we've seen over the last few seasons. One of those new faces is incoming freshman Mathieu Grujicic from Germany. He's still working on some eligibility issues as an overseas player coming to the United Sates, but once he gets that all ironed out, he should be able to provide a scoring punch at multiple spots on the floor, much like what we've become accustomed to seeing with European players. Before then, Grujicic is playing for his country in the U18 Eurobasket Tournament and looking extremely productive. It's not quite the same level of competition, but there's no denying the abilities and multiple ways he can score. In the opening game for Germany, Grujicic scored 23 points, pulled down eight rebounds, had two assists, and one steal. Germany ultimately lost its opening round game, but it wasn't because of Grujicic. We have some highlights of his body of work in the game thanks to the Hoops HQ "X" account we think you'll enjoy. Grujicic has flown a little under the radar when it comes to incoming freshmen in the Big Ten, but if he can be anywhere near what we've seen in some of his highlights, he could surprise the opposition and provide another scorer to go with what we already know the Buckeyes have with some of those returning guys. We'll see if this skill set translates to the high level of big-time college basketball when things get going this winter.
