Solheim Cup captain Anna Nordqvist says Leona Maguire is a player you can 'trust'
Anna Nordqvist hopes to be paired with some of her prospective Solheim Cup players during the golf season's European swing over the coming weeks. "Taking on this role as a captain while I'm still playing, it obviously allows me to kind of see them play inside the ropes, which I feel like I've enjoyed," said Nordqvist, a three-time Major winner who will captain Team Europe at next year's competition in the Netherlands. "I think some of them really try to be on their best behaviour when they're playing with me, but I hope to not add any pressure." Nordqvist said she will be "old school" when it comes to selecting players and pairings, rather than basing decisions solely on stats. Read More Golf will be the easy part of busy Irish Open week for Leona Maguire "You can't just statistically put two players together if they don't have any chemistry," she said. "I believe in knowing your partner. Under the gun, when you know you can trust your partner and you know how you react, I feel like you bring out the best in each other. "I started collecting a lot of feedback. Once I've been their teammate, they probably have an easier time opening up to me. I'm probably doing a lot more than what they're thinking I'm doing, behind the scenes." The 38-year-old Swede has been part of every European Solheim Cup team since making her debut in 2009. Those she enjoys playing with most are the ones whose passion for the competition is clear. Nordqvist played the foursomes with Leona Maguire during the 2023 tournament in Spain when Europe tied with the USA to retain the cup. "You know you can trust her," she said. "You know she's as competitive as it gets. You know she's going to do everything she can to put a point on the board. She got the nickname MVP after her first one in Ohio. I don't think she was very happy with the pairing the first day (with Georgia Hall), but they actually kill it and then all of a sudden they realise it was a good pairing and they brought out the best in each other." Nordqvist feels that two or three years ago, she would not have been ready to take on the role. That has changed. Now she feels prepared to help Europe regain the cup they lost last year in Virginia. "I'll pour every single bit of heart I have into it and do my best to prepare the team and show up," she said. "Probably not everyone is excited that I'm captain, but hopefully a lot of the girls will know that I'm going to do the best job that I can to get us that cup back in the Netherlands next year."

Anna Nordqvist named European Solheim Cup captain, opens up about anxiety issues
LONDON — Anna Nordqvist was appointed Monday as the captain of the European team for next year's Solheim Cup in the Netherlands, and described the role as 'the greatest honor you can get as a golfer.' Europe will look to reclaim the cup after losing, 15½-12½, on U.S. soil last year. That was the Americans' first win since 2017. Nordqvist, a 37-year-old Swede who is a three-time major champion and still active on the Ladies European Tour, was a playing vice-captain in the 2023 and 2024 matches and has represented Europe nine times in the biggest team event in women's golf. She is one of the European team's most successful players, winning the Solheim Cup five times and claiming 17 victories in her 35 matches in the events. 'Whether we were winning or losing, the Solheim Cup has played such a huge part in my career ever since I made my debut in 2009 in Chicago,' Nordqvist said. 'The friendships I have made, and the memories created during the nine matches I've played, make it so incredibly special to be given the opportunity to be European captain at my 10th Solheim Cup.' In an interview with Swedish news agency TT, Nordqvist said she has been 'under incredible stress for so many years' because she produces high levels of cortisol — a stress hormone — and has undergone therapy and learned trauma management to handle the issue. 'It has knocked out my entire system on the golf course, at times I could feel rather unconscious,' she was quoted as saying. 'There are several tournaments I don't even remember having played. The Solheim Cup in Spain (in 2023) is one of them. I remember a few holes here and there.' She also said she had surgery in November after doctors discovered a large cyst and a tumor in her stomach. They turned out to be benign, but that ordeal also caused her 'a great deal of anxiety,' she said. 'Today I would say that I feel very good,' Nordqvist, whose last major win was the AIG Women's Open in 2021, told TT, 'but it has taken a very long time to get here and it has been a tough journey.' The 2026 edition will take place at Bernardus Golf in Cromvoirt, a village in southern Netherlands close to the historic cathedral city of Den Bosch. It will be the first time the Netherlands hosts the Solheim Cup.

Swedish major winner Nordqvist named Europe's Solheim Cup captain
Sweden's three-time major winner Anna Nordqvist will be Europe's Solheim Cup captain as they bid to regain the trophy in next year's edition, it was announced on Monday. The 37-year-old, who has been a member of five winning Solheim Cup sides in her nine appearances, said she was honoured to have been appointed for the biennial match with the United States. The 2026 renewal takes place at Bernardus Golf, in Cromvoirt, near Eindhoven and 's-Hertogenbosch, in the Netherlands from September 11-13. "I am so honoured to be appointed as the 2026 European Solheim Cup Captain," said Nordqvist in a statement on the Solheim Cup website. "Whether we were winning or losing, the Solheim Cup has played such a huge part in my career ever since I made my debut in 2009 in Chicago. "The friendships I have made, and the memories created during the nine matches I've played, make it so incredibly special to be given the opportunity to be European captain at my tenth Solheim Cup!" Alexandra Armas, Chief Executive Officer of the Ladies European Tour, said Nordqvist, who has won 17 of her 35 Solheim Cup matches and halved three, would be a "very popular" choice amongst the players. "She has been such an important member of the European team over the years -– both on and off the course -- and she was excellent in the role of playing vice-captain last year," said Armas. Nordqvist will bid to regain the cup after the USA won it in 2024, the first time since 2017 they had got their hands on the trophy. She said that the Bernardus club, which hosted the men's European Tour Dutch Open from 2021-23, would be an ideal stage for the match. "I feel especially fortunate to be the captain at Bernardus Golf," said Nordqvist, whose last triumph in a major came in the 2021 British Open. "It's a superb course for match play with fantastic facilities and a stunning clubhouse so we couldn't ask for a better stage for the 20th edition of the Solheim Cup." pi/mw
