Cronenworth's walk-off single in the 10th lifts the Padres to a 3-2 win over the Rangers

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jake Cronenworth singled to right field with the bases loaded and two outs in the 10th inning to give the San Diego Padres a 3-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Friday.
Cronenworth's single off Robert Garcia (1-4) brought in automatic runner Jackson Merrill. Cronenworth raised his right index finger as he rounded first base and was mobbed by teammates near second after his fifth career walk-off hit.
Manny Machado was intentionally walked to open the inning and Luis Arraez struck out. Gavin Sheets singled to center to load the bases. Xander Bogaerts injured himself swinging at the first pitch of his at-bat, was checked by an athletic trainer and left the game. Bryce Johnson replaced him and struck out.
The Rangers went to extra innings for the sixth time in nine games, losing four of them.
Machado had two hits to reach 1,997 in his career, including a 440-foot solo home run to straightaway center field in the fourth to pull the Padres to 2-1. Machado, elected the National League's starting third baseman for the All-Star Game, has 356 career homers.
The Rangers jumped on Randy Vásquez with two outs in the third. Josh Smith walked and Corey Seager singled, with both scoring when Marcus Semien doubled to right-center over Fernando Tatis Jr.'s outstretched glove.
After Machado's homer pulled the Padres within one, they tied it in the sixth, getting just one run despite loading the bases with one out.
Tatis opened with a triple that ticked off the glove of right fielder Adolis García. Machado's one-out walk chased starter Kumar Rocker, and Arraez greeted Hoby Milner with an RBI single. Sheets singled to load the bases before Milner struck out Bogaerts and Cronenworth.
Adrian Morejon (5-3) got the win.

Grid penalty for Bearman at British Grand Prix after a pit-lane crash under a red flag

SILVERSTONE, England (AP) — Oliver Bearman will head into his first home race in Formula 1 with a 10-place grid penalty after crashing on his way into the pit lane under a red flag. The 20-year-old Haas rookie lost control and spun into a barrier while coming into the pits after the third practice session had been stopped because of an earlier crash for Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto. The race stewards ruled that Bearman had failed to comply with red-flag rules when he 'accelerated significantly to race pace' before coming into the pits. The stewards said the British driver had been trying to simulate coming into the pits in race conditions and had been going faster under the red flag than on his previous entry to the pits. Bearman said the crash happened because his brakes had gone cold under the red flag conditions. 'While this may have been a factor contributing to the crash, we do not consider it to be a mitigating factor,' the stewards ruled. As well as the grid penalty, Bearman picks up four penalty points, giving him a total of eight. Reaching 12 penalty points means an automatic one-race suspension. (Photo credit: Eric Canha-Imagn Images) The Boston Red Sox placed right-handed reliever Liam Hendriks on the 15-day injured list on Friday, retroactive to Wednesday, with right hip inflammation. In a corresponding move, the Red Sox recalled right-handed reliever Nick Burdi from Triple-A Worcester. Hendriks, 36, is 0-2 in 14 appearances with a 6.59 ERA in 13 2/3 innings this season. He did not make his season debut until April 20 due to a compressed nerve in his right forearm. A three-time All-Star closer, Hendriks underwent treatment for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in early 2023 and missed all of the 2024 season following Tommy John surgery. In 14 seasons with the Minnesota Twins (2011-13), Toronto Blue Jays (2014, 2015), Kansas City Royals (2014), Oakland Athletics (2016-20), Chicago White Sox (2021-23) and Red Sox, Hendriks is 33-36 with 116 saves and a 3.88 ERA in 663 2/3 innings over 490 games (44 starts). This will be the 32-year-old Burdi's second stint this season with the Red Sox, having allowed four hits and one walk in 2 1/3 innings in two previous appearances. At Triple-A Worcester, Burdi is 4-0 with four saves and an 0.48 ERA in 15 appearances. In parts of six seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates (2018-20), Chicago Cubs (2023), New York Yankees (2024) and Red Sox, Burdi is 3-2 with a 5.93 ERA in 33 games spanning 27 1/3 innings. --Field Level Media

Three-time All-Star Whit Merrifield retires after 9 seasons

(Photo credit: Brett Davis-Imagn Images) Whit Merrifield, a three-time MLB All-Star who last played for the Atlanta Braves in 2024, announced his retirement Tuesday after nine years in the big leagues. In a statement released through his agency, Warner Sports Management, Merrifield cited his family -- namely a daughter born in March 2024 -- as a reason to step away. 'I was never talented enough to just show up and play,' Merrifield said. 'Baseball required my full focus and energy for me to compete at the level I wanted to, and I realize I can no longer give that effort. 'At this point in life, I'd much rather chase around a toddler than chase sliders.' The 36-year-old infielder, a ninth-round selection of the Kansas City Royals in 2010, spent more than six seasons in the minor leagues before making his major league debut at age 27 in 2016. Merrifield ends his career with 1,249 hits -- including 94 home runs and 256 doubles -- and a .280 batting average in 1,147 games. He led the American League in stolen bases three times, finishing his career with 218 swipes. 'Since I've now had some time away from the game, I've had a chance to reflect on my individual career for the first time in my life,' Merrifield said. 'I'm proud of myself. The toughness I developed and the things I was able to accomplish, nobody outside of my camp thought possible.' Merrifield quickly established himself as a premier player for Kansas City after his call-up, earning MVP votes in 2018 after batting a career-best .304. He followed that up in 2019 with a .302 season that was highlighted by his first All-Star nod. He added another All-Star selection in 2021 and a third in 2023 as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays. Merrifield signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2024 but was released after batting .199 in 53 games. He finished the year with the Braves, with whom he hit .248. 'I loved all the moments,' Merrifield said. 'All the highs and even all the lows. I'm grateful for the way this game molded me. I can't wait to tell my story to my daughter one day.' --Field Level Media
