New Delhi, Druk Padma Karpo School , nestled in the cold desert of Ladakh and popularly known as "Rancho's school", has finally got CBSE affiliation more than two decades after it was founded. The affiliation was granted after several delays and rejections. The school, which shot to fame after it featured in the Aamir Khan-starrer movie "3 Idiots" in 2009, was so far affiliated with the Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education (JKBOSE).Known for its innovative methods of teaching much before the new National Education Policy (NEP) proposed reforms to move away from traditional "rot learning", the school is now planning to expand till class 12."We have finally got the CBSE affiliation after delay of several years and our first batch of class 10 students is now waiting for their CBSE board exam results."Though we had all the required infrastructure in place, excellent result record and focus on innovative ways of teaching and learning, we didn't get the NOC from the JKBOSE despite several attempts all these years," school principal Mingur Angmo told PTI.As per the affiliation norms of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), schools require a 'no objection certificate' from the respective state board. The foreign schools require a similar document from the embassy concerned or the Consulate of India in the country concerned.The school has been trying to get the clearance since even before Ladakh acquired the Union Territory status."The infrastructure is already being expanded and we plan to start class 11 and 12 by 2028. We are conducting some training for our teachers to facilitate a smooth transition for students to the CBSE curriculum. Our methods of teaching were different from traditional classroom teaching and with the CBSE also reforming its pedagogy after the NEP, it will be easier for us to blend both," Angmo explained.Even after the bifurcation, several schools in Ladakh continue to be affiliated to the Jammu and Kashmir board.A committee had also proposed establishment of a new territorial board in Ladakh with an aim to fulfil the "realistic needs of the students as per the natural conditions of the region".The 24-year-old school is named after Mipham Pema Karpo (1527-1592), who is revered as a great scholar, while Padma Karpo means 'White Lotus' in Bothi, the local language.The school is now flocked by tourists, making it a 'must go' point on the itinerary. A wall of the school's building featured in the closing scene of the Bollywood film in which one of the characters, Chatur, tries to urinate but gets an electric shock as two kids throw at him a light bulb connected with wire from the first floor's window.While the 'iconic idiotic wall' - part of a building which was damaged in the 2010 flash floods - still remains on campus, the first floor, earlier made of bricks, has been replaced with wooden structures typically used in Ladakh.The school decided in 2018 to relocate the 'Rancho's wall' to ensure students don't get distracted due to inflow of tourists."Now the two areas are separate, the students do not get disturbed by the tourists. However, at times tourists get to attend some activities ongoing at the school. Like yesterday, we had conducted mock elections with the election commission here. The activity was done to give students a first-hand experience of the democratic process right from voting to the forming of a government."So, if there is such an activity going on, we sometimes allow visitors to attend or see," Angmo explained."With CBSE affiliation, the transition for higher education in the country and abroad will be easier for our students and we can set an example of blending traditional classroom learning with innovative and play-way methods of teaching," she added.

Fadnavis further assured that strict action will be taken against the accused. 'Some people deliberately post such statuses to create tension, but strict action will definitely be taken against them. Just because a gathering or event took place, does that give anyone the freedom to post such provocative statuses? No one has the right to make offensive remarks against any religion in this manner. So, to say that the tension arose because of a public gathering is completely incorrect," he added. He also urged people to maintain peace and not to take the law into their own hands. 'We have only one appeal: everyone should maintain peace, and no one should take the law into their own hands. If anyone does so, the police will take strict action against them," he added. Victim Shares Ordeal A bakery owner, whose shop was vandalised during the clashes, recounted his ordeal. He said that the people of one community pelted stones, took away the tin sheets, and hurled something inflammable inside the bakery. 'Some of my workers are Muslims and they have come from UP. A social media post surfaced in the morning, it was said that Muslims had posted an objectionable social media post. There is a mosque 150-200 metres from here. They were heading to the mosque. Someone said that this bakery belongs to Muslims. But the bakery belongs to us, and they (workers) are here on rent. Mob violence in Pune's Yavat over 'objectionable' WhatsApp post; youth detained
An irate mob vandalised properties and indulged in arson in Yavat in Pune's Daund tehsil on Friday afternoon over an objectionable post allegedly uploaded on social media by a youth from a different community, police officials said. There is heavy police presence in the village at the moment and peace and order has been restored, these officials said. The youth, who hails from outside the village, had kept an objectionable Whatsapp post, and he has been detained, Sandip Singh Gill, Superintendent of Police (Pune Rural), told PTI. "On being alerted, we detained the youth and the process of taking action was underway. However, by then the post went viral, leading to trouble in the village already tense due to some previous incidents. The mob vandalised structures belonging to members of the opposite community hailing from outside," Gill said. Another official said residents of the village, who are from both communities, are opposed to some persons who are "non-native" and hail from outside the region. This official said the village was tense recently after the desecration of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at a temple. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who was in Pune to attend an event, said a youth, who hails from outside, had put up an objectionable post about a Hindu priest raping someone, which angered residents. "To disperse the mob, police had to resort to lathi charge. The situation in Yavat is now under control and peace prevails. People from both communities are together and efforts are on to defuse tensions. Some persons keep such objectionable posts just to create tension. Strict action will be taken against them. No one has the right to post objectionable content," the CM said.

SC flags ecological imbalance in Himachal Pradesh, warns state may 'vanish in thin air'
The Supreme Court has flagged the ecological imbalance in Himachal Pradesh and cautioned that the entire state may "vanish in thin air" if the situation does not change. SC noted that nature definitely is "annoyed" with the activities that are going on in Himachal Pradesh.(PTI) Observing that the situation in Himachal Pradesh has gone from bad to worse, the apex court said climate change is having a "visible and alarming impact" on the state. "We want to impress upon the state government and Union of India that earning revenue is not everything. Revenue cannot be earned at the cost of environment and ecology," a bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan said. "If things proceed the way they are as on date, the day is not far when the entire state of HP may vanish in thin air from the map of the country. God forbid this doesn't happen," it said. The top court made the observations on July 28 while dealing with a petition against an order of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, which declined to entertain a plea challenging the state's June 2025 notification declaring certain areas as "green area". While refusing to interfere with the high court's order, the apex court said the obvious reason for issuing the notification was to curb construction activities in a particular area. "The situation in the state of Himachal Pradesh has gone from bad to worse. The severe ecological imbalance and other environmental conditions have led to serious natural calamities over a period of years," the bench said. It noted the nature definitely is "annoyed" with the activities that are going on in Himachal Pradesh. "It is not right to blame only nature for the disaster in Himachal Pradesh. Humans, not nature, are responsible for phenomenon such as continuous land sliding of mountains and soil, landslides on roads, collapsing of houses and buildings, subsidence of road etc.," it said. The bench said according to experts and various reports, the major causes of destruction in the state are hydropower projects, four-lane roads, deforestation, multi-storey buildings, etc. It observed that Himachal Pradesh is nestled in the lap of Himalayan mountains and it is important to seek the opinion of geologists, environmental experts and locals before any development project is undertaken there. The bench said taking advantage of the state's natural beauty, the government started constructing four-lane roads to promote it as a tourist destination. "With forests encompassing more than 66 per cent of the total land area, Himachal Pradesh is renowned for its abundant beauty and greenery. But the danger to this natural richness is growing as a result of human greed and apathy," it said. The bench said unrelenting building, tunnel and road construction, frequently done without sufficient environmental planning, has increased the area's susceptibility to natural disasters and effects of climate change. Stating that Himachal Pradesh is often referred to as the "power state" of India due to its significant hydropower potential, the bench said, "While this form of energy is renewable and low-carbon, large-scale construction of dams, reservoirs, and tunnels comes with considerable environmental costs." It said the state has been witnessing rising average temperatures, shifting snowfall patterns and an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. "These changes threaten not only the environment but also the livelihoods of local communities dependent on farming, horticulture, and eco-tourism deforestation and forest degradation are major concerns," it said. It also flagged forest fires, encroachments, overgrazing and expansion of agricultural and urban areas as contributing factors. The bench said pace of infrastructure development in the state has intensified in recent years, driven by the twin goals of connectivity and tourism. Projects like four-lane highways, ropeways, tunnels and urban expansions often bypass environmental safeguards, it said. The apex court also said that tourism is a major source of income in Himachal Pradesh but the uncontrolled growth of tourism has strained the state's environment. "If left unchecked, the pressure from tourism could severely undermine the ecological and social fabric of the state," it said. Referring to the peculiarities in the Himalayan region, the bench said there is a need for all the Himalayan states to collate resources and expertise so as to ensure that development plans are cognizant of these challenges. "All that we want to convey today is that it is high time the state of HP pays attention to what we have observed and starts taking necessary action at the earliest in the right direction," it said. The bench said the Centre also owes an obligation to see that ecological imbalance in the state does not get further disturbed and natural calamities do not occur. "Of course much damage has been caused but there is a saying that 'something is better than nothing'," the bench observed, as it directed the apex court registry to register a writ petition in public interest in this regard. "We expect the state to file an appropriate reply explaining whether they have any action plan to meet with the issues we have discussed and what do they propose to do in future," it said. The bench also said the registry shall notify the matter before it after obtaining appropriate order from the Chief Justice of India. It posted the matter for hearing on August 25.
