Few actresses embody the cultural zeitgeist of 1990s Hong Kong quite like Carman Lee Yeuk-tung.
Her portrayal of Little Dragon Maiden, or Xiaolongnü, in the 1995 TVB drama series The Condor Heroes 95 defined a generation's ideal of femininity in the wuxia fantasy world created by martial arts novelist
Louis Cha Leung-yung , better known as Jin Yong.
Her portrayal of the ethereal, sword-wielding nun who possesses qualities of loyalty and independence and an unbreakable spirit despite personal trauma was lauded by the author himself as the embodiment of the character he created. Now, 30 years later, she is still regarded by many as the best casting of a Cha heroine.

Born Lee Wai-han in Hong Kong, the seventh of 10 children, Lee was raised in Kowloon's Ngau Tau Kok Upper Estate and later in Sha Tin, where she attended Kiangsu-Chekiang College (Shatin).

Stage set for huge Happy Valley season finale as Benno Yung, Antoine Hamelin, Alfred Chan and Ben Thompson sign off

A Happy Wednesday music festival and a pyrotechnics show will provide the backdrop for Wednesday night's season finale at Happy Valley, where the fight for the Tony Cruz Award will go down to the wire and the curtain will come down on Benno Yung Tin-pang's training career. The season's Champion Griffin will also be crowned, with Sky Jewellery, Crossborderpegasus and Magnifique in the running, and there will be a jockeys' parade on the track so fans can interact with their favourite riders and maybe even score a horse plushie. Matthew Poon Ming-fai (36 winners) leads the Tony Cruz Award standings but the race to be anointed the campaign's most successful local jockey is one of the most hotly contested in years, with Matthew Chadwick (35) and Derek Leung Ka-chun (34) in hot pursuit. Yung saddles up four runners as he looks to add to his 360 successes across 12 seasons training in the Hong Kong pressure cooker, with last-start winner Endued perhaps the veteran handler's best chance on the night in the Class Four Super Oasis Handicap (1,650m). Jockey Hugh Bowman and trainer Benno Yung after Endued's recent win. Endued jumps from gate eight under Hugh Bowman and will carry 134 pounds after a sharp Sha Tin victory earlier this month. Yung will also have high hopes for last-start runner-up Speedy Smartie in the Class Five Silver Grecian Handicap (1,200m), while Stormi switches from dirt to turf for the Class Four Turin Redsun Handicap (1,800m). Yung's final career runner comes in the night's feature, the Class Two Lucky Patch Handicap (1,200m), as Aeris Nova chases a first success in the grade. Also finishing up at the midweek meeting are Antoine Hamelin, Alfred Chan Ka-hei and Ben Thompson, with the latter having three chances to add to his Sunday success aboard All's Well before returning to Australia. Alfred Chan returns for his farewell at Happy Valley on Wednesday night. Storming Dragon looks to be Thompson's best chance in the Class Three Sun Jewellery Handicap (1,200m), while he also rides Sportic Warrior and Night Purosangue. Hamelin has punched home 111 winners across more than five seasons in Hong Kong and he has been in top form late in his stint. He has a seven-strong book at the season's 88th and final meeting, headlined by impressive last-start winner Victor The Rapid on the quick backup in the Sun Jewellery Handicap. The Frenchman also partners Winning Money, California Blitz, Floof, Great Legacy, Courier Aladdin and Senor Toba before returning to his homeland. The retiring Chan reappears for his farewell after not riding in a race since February, with the 31-year-old joining forces with the smart Magic Control in the Class Two feature and old friend Sugar Sugar in the season's last race.

Miss Hong Kong Pageant loses another contestant over career conflicts

A barrister has withdrawn from the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, citing conflicts with her legal career among a number of reasons, while organising broadcaster TVB has said it 'respected' her decision. In a post on social media, Kimberlie Chu wrote: 'Farewell Miss Hong Kong! I've withdrawn!' Chu, who also took part in the contest in 2021 but was eliminated at the top 28 stage, said she had received many positive messages from friends since signing up again this year. She is the second notable contestant to drop out of this year's pageant, after Hong Kong's youngest district councillor, 24-year-old Angel Chong Nga-ting, withdrew last month following controversy over her participation as a serving public representative. Chu added she was 'incredibly grateful' for her friends' support and the attention from the media. A TVB spokeswoman said on Friday that it 'fully respected' Chu's decision to prioritise her legal career. 'Decisions like these are deeply personal and often require considerable thought,' she said.

Ellis Wong continues barnstorming finish to the season: ‘I love this horse'

Photo: Kenneth Chan Apprentice jockey boots Dancing Code to victory for boss Caspar Fownes for Saturday night's Class Two Philip Chen Trophy (1,200m) at Sha Tin Apprentice jockey Ellis Wong Chi-wang continued his barnstorming finish to the season by booting Dancing Code to victory for his boss Caspar Fownes in Saturday night's Class Two Philip Chen Trophy (1,200m) at Sha Tin. Sent off the $3.55 favourite, the Aaron Kwok Fu-shing-owned Dancing Code came from forward of midfield to nail Harmony N Blessed and Lady's Choice near the line. 'I'm so happy to win for the boss again and this owner,' said Wong. 'Today, with a good barrier and the strong pace, he travelled really well for me and he tries really hard. He's a small horse but he's got a big heart. He's always fighting really hard. I love this horse.' Dancing Code darts late to grab the Class 2 Philip Chen Trophy at Sha Tin! 🏆 Owned by celebrity superstar Aaron Kwok, the 6YO speedster scoops a fourth win for Caspar Fownes and his apprentice @elliswong05... #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) July 5, 2025 Wong moved to 25 winners for the season, while Derek Leung Ka-chun stayed in the hunt for the Tony Cruz Award for leading local jockey by snaring the Class Five Li Cup (1,600m) aboard Celtic Times – the jockey's 33rd success of the season and 250th victory on the Sha Tin turf. Leung trails Matthew Poon Ming-fai (36 winners) and Matthew Chadwick (34) in the race for the Tony Cruz Award. 'That's not bad,' said Leung of the mini-milestone. 'I'll do my best [to win]. I've got to catch 'The [Poon] Train' first.' Frankie Lor Fu-chuen also ticked a little box on Saturday, edging clear of David Hayes to be the most successful trainer on the dirt this season, with the win of Gimme Five in the Class Five Swaine Cup (1,200m) the handler's 10th on the surface for the term. Celtic Times dominates for Derek Leung, who rides his 250th winner on Sha Tin's turf course, while Manfred Man equals his career-best 44 wins in a season! 👏 #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) July 5, 2025 Gimme Five's win was the first leg of a double for Teetan, who also saluted aboard Ka Ying Resilience for Hayes in the Class Four Arculli Trophy (1,200m). Hayes also enjoyed a brace after snaring the Class Four Ip Jug (1,800m) with Fortune Boy, trimming John Size's lead in the trainers' premiership to seven with three meetings remaining. Hayes was pleased to see Ka Ying Resilience break through at start 11. 'We have been leading with the horse and he's looked a bit weak, so we thought we'd try and take a sit from a good barrier and hope that it would work and it really did,' said the trainer. 'I think next season we won't be leading all the time with him, especially when he draws an inside gate. I think there's a lot of upside in the horse next season. He's a good horse to follow next year.'
