Westley continues rich form for Essex against Bears

Tom Westley's rich vein of form in the County Championship continued as he notched his third century in five innings to frustrate Warwickshire on day one at Chelmsford. As well hitting his 32nd first-class hundred in an innings of sublime stroke-play, the Essex captain also passed 14,000 career runs in red-ball cricket. With Paul Walter, who hit 86 from 160 balls, Westley put on 132 for the second wicket and 81 for the third with Jordan Cox. At stumps, Westley was unbeaten on 124 from 234 balls with Essex 350-4.Walter, posting his fifth score above fifty this season, two of them centuries, launched two sixes and nine fours. It enabled Essex to build on the euphoria of only their second Championship win of the season last week at Hove, a win that lifted them out of the relegation places. The only redeeming feature for Warwickshire on a gloomy day that matched their deteriorating mood, was arguably the first career wicket for part-time leg-spinner Zen Malik. Brought on to eat up an over before the arrival of the second new-ball, Malik had Cox attempting to hit his fifth delivery out of the park, but instead the batsmen ended up on his backside with his stumps akimbo. Before the start of the play, Essex's own bowling plans had twice been thrown into disarray in the space of 24 hours. They had already lost one member of their attack when Indian international pace bowler Khaleel Ahmed pulled out of a contract due to run to the end of the season, citing "personal reasons". Then, less than quarter-of-an-hour before the start of the match, off-spinner Simon Harmer, who had taken part in all the warm-up routines, withdrew also offering "personal reasons" for his absence. Those problems were shelved for the time being as Essex were put into bat on a hybrid pitch with plenty of grass left on to help encourage greater carry for the bowlers. In fact, it encouraged the batsmen and a flurry of straight-driven fours enabled the Essex openers to compile 68 runs without undue alarm in 19 overs.Dean Elgar, overcoming a torrid first over from Oliver Hannon-Dalby, brought up the fifty partnership with an uncharacteristic slash at Beau Webster that cleared the slip cordon. However, he departed soon after to his second rash shot of the innings, pulling the Australian low to mid-wicket.On one occasion, Walter, so strong off the backfoot, came down the wicket to waft Corey Rocchiccioli for six over extra cover and post Essex's first hundred. He reached his half-century from 79 balls with a well-placed push into the off-side for two. Walter took a liking to the Australian off-spinner with another six, this time over long-on.At the other end, some of Westley's strokes were exquisite. He produced a classically executed cover drive for four off Ethan Bamber, and later essayed a textbook straight-drive off Webster. Another off-drive for four by Westley off Webster took the stand with Walter to three-figures, of which both batsmen contributed 49. Three balls later Westley reached a 107-ball fifty.Westley had just taken Essex past 200 with only one wicket down when, next ball, Walter's four-hour innings came to an end. He got an outside edge to a delivery from Rocchiccioli, the ball ricocheting off wicketkeeper Kai Smith's thigh and ballooning up for a diving Alex Davies to claim at slip.Bamber switched ends straight after tea and immediately extracted some rare bounce and lift that had Westley groping at thin air. Normal service was quickly resumed, though, and soon Westley was angling Ed Barnard to third man for the boundary that took him to his century from 185 balls.Bamber finally gained some reward late on when he had Matt Critchley swinging and bottom-edging through to the wicketkeeper.

Dutch trip is nothing new for Wrexham AFC coach Jones

Wrexham fly off to the Netherlands today and will take on Groningen tomorrow in their final pre-season friendly ahead of next week's Championship opener at Southampton. Jones had a successful spell in Holland at NEC Nijmegen while on loan from Manchester United, scoring six goals in 17 appearances - and one of those strikes came against Groningen. 'It will be an excellent game for us in preparation for the Championship,' said Jones. 'Groningen are a good side with some decent players. 'They finished last season quite strongly and had some big results in the run in, including a 2-2 draw with Ajax, which was the game that handed the advantage to PSV in the title race. 'They have goals in their team from all areas so it's a test we're looking forward to as we get closer to the start of the season. 'It's always beneficial to play different types of teams in pre-season as each week the Championship presents a new challenge'. Jones was only 22 at the time and went on to have a top career at Derby, Wolves, Wigan, Blackburn, Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday. 'It was a great move for me as a young player,' he added. 'The league is highly competitive and very tactical with some big European clubs so it was the ideal place for me to go at the time. 'Making my debut in a 1-1 draw against Ajax in the Amsterdam Arena was a memorable occasion and then only a few weeks later, I was man marking Philip Cocu against PSV Eindhoven. 'These experiences are invaluable when you are making your way in the game and you learn so much from playing against top players on a regular basis.' Reds boss Phil Parkinson says the club's pre-season schedule proves Wrexham are an attractive proposition after a trip to the Netherlands to face FC Groningen in a friendly was added to the list. As part of the preparations for the 2025-26 Championship campaign, Parkinson's men will face the Dutch top-flight side at De Langeleegte in Veendam (3pm kick-off local time). 'We're playing two games so all players will get a run out,' said Parkinson ahead of his team's final friendly before the season starts at Southampton. 'One will be in the morning and then one in the afternoon.' Away supporters are not allowed to attend the game at the request of the local authorities. The Dutch trip follows on from Wrexham's Down Under Tour while the club has enjoyed two highly successful pre-season tours to the USA and North America. The club has become a global sensation under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and Parkinson feels Wrexham are much-sought after opponents for high-profile friendlies. 'Wrexham is an attractive proposition, hence the reason we have been able to agree to the friendlies,' added the Reds' boss. 'I couldn't have imagined that a few years ago but it is where the profile of the club is now, and obviously we are Championship standard as well.'

SPFL side slam their own fans for 'embarrassing the club' after pyro halts FIRST competitive match of league season

ARBROATH have urged their fans to help them find two individuals who they say "embarrassed the club" by throwing pyro onto the pitch during the very first competitive match of the SPFL season The Gayfield side unfurled the League One title flag on Friday night against Ayr Utd as they put in an accomplished display in a 1-1 draw against Scott Brown's Championship promotion hopefuls. It was captured live on BBC - with SPFL chief executive in attendance. League bosses are cracking down more closely than in recent seasons on pyrotechnics offences - particularly when stoppages are caused to live broadcasts. Celtic, Aberdeen and Partick Thistle were all served with notices of complaint for their fans' use of pyro in games at the end of last season - and it could cost the clubs ticket allocations at Hampden in future matches. Arbroath released a stinging response online, asking fans to shop their fellow supporters, and saying they're not the kind of fans they want at their matches going forward. They wrote: "We would like to thank over 1000 Lichties who attended Gayfield Park to support the team tonight - and we continue to value your support week in, week out as the league progresses. "However, we had two individuals throw burning pyrotechnic devices above our fans' heads in a confined space, which then landed on the pitch, damaging our playing surface while putting our fans, stewards and the players at severe safety risk. "Therefore it is within Arbroath FC's best interests to hold those accountable for their actions, as we strive for our stadium to be a safe place to attend. "To the two individuals - you have not only embarrassed yourselves, you have embarrassed the club within the community, on national television and in front of SPFL delegates. "This is not a fair representation of our club, and absolutely not the impression we wish to give on our return to the championship. Shocking moment Celtic fan's hair set on FIRE after wild pyro display at Hibs game "The current law on pyrotechnics is clear, they are forbidden within stadiums. The club has to follow the SPFL's unacceptable conduct rules, which highlights the possession and discharge of pyrotechnics - in which we as a club must demonstrate an appropriate response. "At this time we ask anyone that can identify the two individuals that have harmed our club and potential supporters to come forward to we can remove these types of individuals from our ground. "These are not the type of individuals we seek support from as they have demonstrated a clear lack of respect for our club, fans, players and safety of all."
