44 interns join Lockheed Martin's advanced technology internship in Abu Dhabi
ABU DHABI (WAM) Lockheed Martin recently launched the latest edition of its summer internship programme at the Centre for Innovation and Security Solutions (CISS) in Abu Dhabi, welcoming 44 aspiring engineers, scientists and future leaders.This year's record-breaking class builds on the momentum of the 2024 summer intake of 32 participants, reflecting Lockheed Martin's continued commitment to developing talent in the United Arab Emirates and shaping the next generation of innovators in defence, aerospace, and advanced technology.The 2025 summer cohort includes UAE nationals, US citizens, and residents representing 16 other nationalities.Six students have travelled from the United States, Singapore, India, and Italy, underscoring the UAE's emergence as a global destination for innovation. All interns were selected through a rigorous, merit-based process based on academic excellence, technical skills and leadership potential.'Lockheed Martin is a global leader in advancing defence innovation, where high-tech meets high impact,' said Gen. John 'Mick' Nicholson, U.S. Army (Ret.), chief executive of Lockheed Martin Middle East.'In the UAE, we are developing future-ready talent through hands-on experience and practical learning. By working together, we are not only supporting national security but also helping to grow the economy, strengthen STEM skills, and advance the country's long-term capabilities.'This summer, interns will collaborate with Lockheed Martin engineers on five advanced projects focused on space systems, artificial intelligence (AI) and simulation. Project themes include lunar base construction using 3D-printed regolith, autonomous foreign debris detection for aviation safety, modular vertical takeoff and landing uncrewed aircraft design, and immersive cockpit simulator development.Interns will also engage in systems planning and applied innovation.'This is more than a training programme. It is a long-term investment in the UAE's talent pipeline and sovereign capabilities,' said Hala Majeed, manager of Lockheed Martin CISS.'These students are turning knowledge into impact by working on real-world challenges and building the advanced skills needed to lead in critical sectors and technology domains.'Since 2017, the CISS internship programme has graduated over 250 students.Alumni have gone on to build careers in aerospace, engineering, and public service, joining organisations such as EDGE Group, Tawazun, Mubadala, the Ministry of Defence, Dubai Police, TII, Khalifa University, AMMROC, GAL, and more than a dozen startups, tech firms, and industry partners.
Lockheed Martin has also hired 14 Emirati interns into high-priority national security programmes, underscoring its long-term investment in local talent.
The programme supports national goals for STEM education, workforce development, and industrial self-reliance, while deepening US-UAE collaboration on innovation, research, and talent development.

Trump intensifies trade war with 30% tariff on EU, Mexico from August 1
President Donald Trump on Saturday said major US trading partners Mexico and the European Union would face a 30 per cent tariff starting next month, ramping up pressure for deals in his trade wars. Both sets of duties would take effect August 1, Trump said in separate letters posted to his Truth Social platform, citing Mexico's role in illicit drugs flowing into the United States and a trade imbalance with the EU respectively. The duties are higher than the 25 per cent levy Trump imposed on Mexican goods earlier this year, although products entering the United States under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement are exempted. Canada earlier received a similar letter setting out 35 per cent tariffs on its goods. The EU tariff is also markedly steeper than the 20 per cent levy Trump unveiled in April, as negotiations with the bloc continue. The EU, alongside dozens of other economies, had been set to see its US tariff level increase from a baseline of 10 per cent on Wednesday, but Trump pushed back the deadline to August 1 just days before the elevated rates were due to take effect. Since the start of the week, Trump has sent out letters to more than 20 countries with updated tariffs for each.

UAE, Germany launch joint business council to strengthen economic ties
Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Special Envoy to the Federal Republic of Germany, and Katherina Reiche, German Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy, witnessed the official launch of the UAE-Germany Business Council (GUBC) during a high-level ceremony in Berlin. The event brought together more than 150 prominent business leaders and senior officials from both countries and formed part of the official visit of Dr. Al Jaber to Germany. The establishment of the UAE-Germany Business Council reflects the strong and long-standing economic partnership between the two nations, built over five decades of collaboration and mutual understanding. The council aims to open new avenues for trade and investment, and to support sustainable development amid a rapidly evolving global economic and geopolitical landscape. On this occasion, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber stated, 'In line with the vision of our leadership to build high-impact partnerships that advance inclusive progress, we are committed to strengthening the deep-rooted relationship between the UAE and Germany and elevating it to new heights. The launch of the UAE-Germany Business Council will create new opportunities for cooperation across vital sectors of mutual interest, empower the private sector, and support sustainable economic development.' The ceremony also featured the official signing of the UAE-Germany Business Council charter by Musabbeh Al Kaabi on behalf of the UAE, and Günther Oettinger, former Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg and Co-Chair of the Council, representing the German side. Musabbeh Al Kaabi, Executive Director of Low Carbon Solutions and International Growth at Adnoc, and Co-Chair of the Business Council, added, 'The UAE and Germany share a bold and future-focused vision for global progress. Driven by innovation and grounded in mutual interests, our partnership continues to evolve. I am confident the Council will accelerate our collaboration, foster sustainable growth, and reflect our shared ambition in a fast-changing world.' During the ceremony, Masdar, a global leader in clean energy, also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with EnBW - Energie Baden-Württemberg, one of Europe's largest energy companies. The MoU aims to explore collaboration on battery energy storage system projects in Germany and the United Kingdom. The two companies will also assess joint opportunities in offshore wind projects in the North Sea and Baltic Sea, as well as in green hydrogen and other renewable energy technologies. Earlier Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Managing Director and Group CEO of Adnoc, and UAE Special Envoy to the Federal Republic of Germany, concluded an official visit to Berlin aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and exploring opportunities for cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Dr Al Jaber also held a series of high-level meetings as part of the visit with senior German government officials and private sector leaders, accompanied by Ahmed Al Attar, UAE Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany. Dr Sultan Al Jaber met with Dr Johann David Wadephul, Minister of Foreign Affairs; and Serap Güler, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office. The meetings discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation, with both sides emphasising the importance of the strategic partnership between the UAE and Germany and the need to explore new avenues of collaboration across key priority sectors. Discussions also touched on advancing economic and diplomatic ties and enhancing cooperation in a way that supports sustainable economic development in both countries. He also held a meeting with Katharina Reiche, Minister of Economy and Energy, during which they discussed the latest developments in bilateral relations and strategic initiatives, including the UAE–Germany Energy Partnership launched in 2017. The meeting also addressed opportunities to broaden cooperation in sectors such as energy, renewable energy, industry, infrastructure, investment, trade, healthcare, and tourism. Both sides underlined the importance of supporting the private sector and fostering a more enabling business environment, while affirming the central role of these sectors in advancing sustainable development and driving economic growth in both countries. He also held bilateral meetings with Thorsten Frei, Head of the Federal Chancellery and Minister of State for Special Tasks, Dr. Levin Holle, Director General for Economic, Financial, and Climate Policy at the Federal Chancellery and the Chancellor's Sherpa to the G7 and G20 Summits, and Hendrik Wüst, Minister-President of North Rhine–Westphalia. The meetings addressed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation across several priority areas for both countries, including government operations, and explored opportunities to expand trade and industrial collaboration between the two friendly nations in a manner that supports sustainable development.
