Protest seeking disbursementof grants: Oppn leaders join teachers at protest site in Azad MaidanOppn leaders join teachers at protest site in Azad Maidan
According to protesting teachers, a Government Resolution (GR) was issued on October 14, 2024 which stated that the fourth phase of government grant approved for over 5,000 private unaided schools in the state will be issued following such a decision made during the legislative assembly session taking place around that time. However, even after ten months, the government is yet to make any financial provision for this, leading to widespread anger among teachers.
Sanjay Daware from Kayam Vinaanudanit Shala Kruti Samiti, which is one of the teachers' organisations participating in the ongoing protest, said, 'The amount goes up to Rs 1,160 crore. Even as the government assured release of this grant in 2024, there is no development thereafter.'
As per information shared by Daware, currently there are 5,844 partially aided private schools in the state. These include 820 primary, 1,984 secondary, and 3,040 higher secondary schools. A total of 8,602 primary teachers, 24,028 secondary teachers, and 16,932 higher secondary teachers and non-teaching staff are employed in these schools.
All these schools were initially approved on the principle that they will always remain unaided, meaning there will be no government grants. In 2009, the word 'always' was removed by the government, following a massive protest by teachers. Furthermore, it was decided to make them partially aided, based on the evaluation of these schools. Accordingly, in 2014, such evaluations were held, and partial grants were approved for these schools in phases to be disbursed at regular intervals.
Daware said that three phases of such granting are completed successfully, and a fourth one was finalised in October 2024. 'But it remains on paper, forcing us to agitate in protest,' he said.
Various political leaders from the opposition are now coming out in their support of protesting teachers.
Congress MLC Satej Patil raised the issue in the legislative council of over 10,000 teachers sitting in protest at Azad Maidan for demand of grants assured by the state government and demanded that the chief minister should call them for discussion. While responding to Patil, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis hit back at Congress-NCP and Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government for not helping teachers in the past and now playing politics over it. Fadnavis also announced that Minister Girish Mahajan has been coordinating with the teachers' association and the government will hold a meeting with them. 'All these schools were started on the condition of being permanently non-aided, but Congress-NCP government later removed the word permanently non-aided. During my first government between 2014-2019 we gave the first phase of grant. After 2019, the MVA government was there but that government did not give a single rupee to them and now leaders from the opposition are playing politics and it's not good. State government has assured them of the next phase of grant but there are some issues, and we will hold a meeting with teachers,' said Fadnavis.
Earlier, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Nationalist Congress Party (SP) president Sharad Pawar on Wednesday extended support to the protests by teachers at Azad Maidan by visiting the protest site. On Tuesday night, NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar spent a night at Azad Maidan along with protesting teachers.
'I have come to promise you today what we had promised when we were in power. We will not sit still until we give you what you deserve. We always say, 'Father is God, Mother is God, Guru is God.' But the rulers only want to listen to what Delhiites say, as they are their Guru. That is why injustice is being done by them. In Maharashtra, the slaves of Delhi have taken the vow to crush the sons of the land and the Marathi people. Let us unite and teach them such a lesson that they will not be left to falter,' said Thackeray.
He further added, 'Remember that we were and are with you, and we will come again.' He took a dig at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for his 'Mi Punha Yein' (I will come back again).'
Pawar said that while the teachers' responsibility is to extend education to students, it is the government's responsibility to ensure right to live with pride. 'We always worked with this attitude. I was told that the minister was coming to meet you and solve the problem. But since you are still sitting here, that means the issue has not been solved. I feel that those who have the responsibility to create the future generation should not face the trouble of fighting for their own rights,' said Pawar.

Gujarat MPs spent just 4.2% of local area development funds: Report
SLUG: IN OVER A YEAR Gandhinagar: Over a year since the 18th Lok Sabha was constituted, Members of Parliament (MPs) from Gujarat have utilised only 4.2% of their allocated local area development funds, raising serious questions about the pace of grassroots development work in the state. According to a report by Mahiti Adhikar Gujarat Pahel (MAGP)—an organisation working to promote transparency and accountability—no development work was completed in 14 out of 26 Lok Sabha constituencies of Gujarat since the new Lok Sabha came into existence in June 2024. For Gujarat's 26 MPs, this amounts to a collective allocation of Rs 254.8 crore. However, by July 5, only Rs 10.72 crore had been spent. The Bharuch constituency recorded the highest utilisation at Rs 1.73 crore, followed by Patan with Rs 1.56 crore, and Sabarkantha with Rs 1.08 crore. In sharp contrast, zero spending was reported in key constituencies such as Ahmedabad East, Ahmedabad West, Banaskantha, Chhota Udepur, Gandhinagar, and Navsari. The MAGP report, citing data from the official MPLAD scheme portal, highlights the stark underutilisation of funds that could otherwise be used for critical projects including public health, education, sanitation, irrigation, flood control, energy, agriculture, and infrastructure such as roads and bridges. Pointers: Implementation in a year - Navsari constituency has the highest number of recommendations (297 works), followed by Mehsana constituency (271 works) and Kheda constituency (265 works). - Out of a total of 3,823 recommended works, only 93 works have been completed - No work was completed in 14 of the 26 Lok Sabha constituencies of the state Box: Lack of Transparency Pankti Jog of MAGP said that the MPLAD portal only provides details of the allocated budget, expenditure incurred, and the number of works. "Analysis of how much fund was used by which MP in which specific area or sector is not available on the portal," Jog said. She added that on the earlier portal, MPs themselves could see details like the number of works they recommended which started, how many received technical approval, and how many were rejected. These details are now not available on the portal, she added.

Raju Shetty vows to fight against Shaktipeeth highway
Kolhapur / Sindhudurg, Jul 16 (UNI) MP and president of Anti-Shaktipeeth Highway Action Committee, Raju Shetty, today termed the proposed Shaktipeeth Highway being built by the Maharashtra government as a "Swarthpeeth" (selfish pursuit), which will plunge the state into a debt trap, and vowed to continue his fight till this highway is cancelled. Talking to reporters at Sawantwadi in Sindhudurg district after visiting Sri Patradevi Goa area, he said, "Proposed Shaktipeeth Highway being built by the Maharashtra goverment, is a 'Swarthpeeth' (selfish pursuit), which will plunge the state into a debt trap, and I will fight till the last drop of my blood to get this highway cancelled." Shetty emphasised that his agitation for cancellation of proposed Shaktipeeth was not political but was for protecting the rights of the people of the land and to save the fragile environment. He said that the estimated expenditure of this proposed Shaktipeeth highway is Rs 86,000 crore but considering working style of the state government, the proposed expenditure will raise up to Rs 1.50 lakh crore, which will not be affordable for the government but mount the burden of loan on the state, he reasoned. He made an emotional appeal to the people of Sindhudurg district to extend support for cancellation of the proposed Shaktipeeth highway. Asked about statement of Konkan MLA Deepak Kesarkar who had said that the proposed Shaktipeeth highway will not pass through the Sindhudurg district, Shetty replied that the government has not changed its plan. BJP government in Uttarakhand promoting VIP culture: Congress
The Congress on Wednesday (July 16, 2025) slammed the BJP government in Uttarakhand for promoting VIP culture in the State after Chairman of Badri-Kedar temple Committee (BKTC) took a chopper to Kedarnath despite suspension of services due to bad weather. As per reports, BKTC Chairman Hemant Dwivedi, along with three other persons, took a chopper to Kedarnath on July 14. Heritage aviation had organised the chopper ride. After the matter was reported to officials, the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) ordered an investigation. Sources in the department confirmed that the aviation firm was informed about the guidelines of the Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA), which has totally shut the shuttle services in the Kedar valley due to the weather conditions, while the chopper services of Char Dham are allowed but that too with the riders of weather being suitable for the flight. UCADA CEO Ashish Chauhan told The Hindu that a notice had been issued to the aviation firm. 'After around half a dozen chopper accidents took place in the State during the ongoing char dham yatra, the DGCA had issued instructions to Uttarakhand's authorised agency, UCADA, to impose a complete ban on air services during the rainy season. But BKTC president Hemant Dwivedi has not only flouted the rules by travelling to Kedarnath by helicopter, but once again openly supported the VIP culture,' said Congress spokesperson Garima Dasauni. She said when there was a complete ban on flights for the safety of common devotees, then how and why was this special exemption given to the BKTC president. 'This directly reflects the situation of 'one country, two rules' and is an example of disrespect for government rules,' she added.
