Maharashtra govt orders extensive scrutiny of docus to identify illegal Bangladeshi beneficiaries

Mumbai, In a bid to weed out illegal Bangladeshi beneficiaries of welfare schemes, the Maharashtra government has directed various departments to scrutinise verification documents, particularly those related to identity, residence, and entitlement to benefits. Maharashtra govt orders extensive scrutiny of docus to identify illegal Bangladeshi beneficiaries Citing growing concerns over national security and misuse of public resources, a Government Resolution issued on Friday directed departments to maintain a record of individuals who obtained government certificates using forged or manipulated documents. These individuals, once identified, will be blacklisted and their details made publicly available on departmental websites to prevent further misuse across government bodies. Applicants seeking benefits under personal welfare schemes will now be required to sign declarations confirming their Indian citizenship and acknowledging that any false claim based on fake documentation could lead to criminal prosecution. The GR noted that illegal immigrants, especially in urban and rural areas, are using counterfeit documents to access subsidies and employment opportunities. "This not only leads to an undue burden on the state exchequer but also raises concerns of internal security, especially if such individuals go unchecked in sensitive sectors". The government has mandated that all documents- particularly those related to identity, residence, and entitlement to benefits- should be issued in digital format, embedded with barcodes or QR codes to allow real-time verification. "Departments have been told to implement online systems that can validate the authenticity of submitted certificates directly with the issuing authority," the GR said. The government observed higher chances of forgery and tampering in rural Maharashtra where documents are often still issued manually. It also noted that low-wage illegal immigrants often find employment in household or agricultural work in villages, where background verification is rarely carried out. The government directed district administrations to increase vigilance. It said Police Patils will be tasked with reporting any suspicious undocumented individuals residing in their jurisdiction. Instructions in this regard will be uniformly issued by district collectors. "Contractual staff working in government departments who are involved in the preparation or issuance of official documents will be made legally accountable if found to have facilitated such forgery, knowingly or unknowingly," the GR said. The government directed authorities to immediately cancel documents such as government certificates possessed by illegal Bangladeshi nationals. If necessary, amendments to the relevant laws, rules or regulations will be carried out in consultation with the legal department, it said. The government said owners of commercial establishments where illegal Bangladeshi migrants are found working will be held accountable. "It should be ensured that illegal Bangladeshi migrants will not be given employment at any cost. This directive is part of a broader administrative push to ensure the integrity of public services and protect national interests, the GR said. CM to honour 402 individuals imprisioned during Emergency

Nagpur: Nearly 50 years after the Emergency was imposed in India, the state govt will honour individuals imprisoned during that period. As per a Government Resolution (GR) dated May 30, Nagpur district has 402 individual eligible for recognition. Of these, 241 are from urban constituencies, according to sourced data. The remaining 161 are estimated to be from rural parts of the district. Among the city's constituencies, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's constituency, South West, leads with 89 names, followed by Central (50), South (35), West (38), East (14), and North (9). This urban tally makes up for nearly 60% of the district's total, reflecting the significant role played by Nagpur's urban population during the Emergency. Fadnavis will present certificates of honour, signed by him, to individuals detained under MISA (Maintenance of Internal Security Act), DIR (Defence of India Rules), and related provisions during the Emergency period. The recognition comes as part of a broader effort to formally acknowledge those who resisted the suppression of civil liberties between 1975 and 1977. June 25, 1975, marks the day when fundamental freedoms were curtailed across the country. Press censorship was among the first crackdowns, with newspapers forced to publish only govt-approved content. In Nagpur, many individuals were arrested for defending free speech, democratic rights, and political dissent. The GR, dated May 30, also sanctioned Rs 3.43 crore for Nagpur district under the Emergency Honouree Scheme as part of a larger Rs 28.12 crore statewide allocation. District authorities have been instructed to disburse funds to verified individuals and submit an updated report to the state. While the fund allocation was reported earlier, the newly-accessed constituency-level data provides a sharper insight into the urban-rural distribution. The upcoming ceremony not only marks a historic moment of recognition but also reinforces the importance of preserving democratic values — and those who once paid the price to protect them.

38 Sainik schools to be reviewed in Maharashtra over poor performance

The Maharashtra government has initiated a comprehensive review of 38 privately managed, government-aided Sainik Schools following concerns over their quality standards. A seven-member committee has been formed to evaluate these schools' performances. The review comes after a Government Resolution (GR) highlighted that these institutions have not maintained the required educational standards. These schools currently have a limited success rate in sending students to the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA).advertisementLOW PERCENTAGE OF NDA ADMISSIONSThe GR issued by the school education and sports department identifies the schools' meagre contribution to NDA admissions as a key issue. It was noted that these schools fail to provide adequate military training and guidance, essential for preparing students for the armed forces. The committee, led by the Joint Director of the State Secondary and Higher Secondary Board's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division, will inspect the schools and propose measures to enhance their OUTCOMES OF THE REVIEWThe expectations from this review process are significant. The committee is tasked with examining the challenges these schools face and how the state's revised sainiki schools policy, implemented in October 2024, might be optimised. The GR, issued by the school education and sports department, comes amid rising concerns over the low percentage of students from the 38 Sainiki schools qualifying for NDA, the prestigious defence training institute located at Khadakwasla near Pune. The committee members are expected to inspect the schools, examine the challenges they face, and submit a comprehensive report within the stipulated timeframe.A LONG-TERM VISION FOR IMPROVEMENTadvertisement With 12,400 students currently enrolled in these schools, the committee's findings and recommendations are highly anticipated. The state government acknowledges that joining the armed forces, particularly through the NDA, remains a critical benchmark of success for these schools. As such, the outcome of this review could determine future policy adjustments aimed at enhancing both academic and military training outcomes. The initiative underscores Maharashtra's commitment to refining its educational provisions to better align with student aspirations and national defence needs.(With PTI inputs)- EndsMust Watch

Maharashtra makes Hindi 3rd language for class 1-5; Opposition protests

The Maharashtra government 's move to have Hindi as the third language for students from standard 1 to standard 5 has once again triggered a language war with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Marathi language activists calling it a "backdoor" move for imposing Hindi. The Maharashtra government issued a Government Resolution on Tuesday whereby it modified its GR issued this April where it had made Hindi a mandatory third language for students. The April GR was stayed after the opposition and Marathi language proponents had slammed the move calling it an attempt to "impose Hindi". The modified GR now says Hindi will be taught as a third language but would not be mandatory. Students are at liberty to study any other language provided there are a minimum of 20 students who choose the other language. This move is being projected by parties like MNS as an attempt to 'finish' off Marathi. "We need to oppose it. They ( BJP ) will finish off Marathi literature ," said MNS chief Raj Thackeray .
