'The investigation remains ongoing, however we would like to thank all the members of the public who have so far contacted police.'
Mitchell Prouse yesterday told 1News his mother "went airborne and landed in a ditch", while her friend "got hit and thrown to the side".
"It was shocking when I saw Mum in the ditch, and I thought she was paralysed, and then it was just rage.
"The guy left and both of them could have been dead."

The friend's dog was taken to veterinary intensive care with serious injuries, but the Prouse family's dog, a Huntaway cross named Luna, has yet to be found, he said.

Combs asks judge to throw out guilty verdicts or grant him new trial
Sean "Diddy" Combs has asked a judge to throw out his guilty verdicts on prostitution-related counts or grant him a new trial, saying such convictions are without precedent. "This conviction stands alone, but it shouldn't stand at all," the filing said. Combs' lawyers argue that his two felony convictions were a unique misapplication of the federal Mann Act, which bars interstate commerce related to prostitution. "To our knowledge, Mr. Combs is the only person ever convicted of violating the statute for conduct anything like this," a Thursday filing from Combs legal team said. Combs, 55, was convicted in a New York federal court of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution for flying people around the country, including his girlfriends and male sex workers, for sexual encounters, while he was acquitted of more serious charges. He could get up to a decade in prison at his sentencing set for October 3. ADVERTISEMENT His lawyers argued that none of the elements normally used for Mann Act convictions, including profiting from sex work or coercion, were present here. In this courtroom sketch, Sean "Diddy" Combs reacts after he was convicted of prostitution-related offenses but acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges. (Source: Associated Press) "It is undisputed that he had no commercial motive and that all involved were adults," The filing said. "The men chose to travel and engage in the activity voluntarily. The verdict confirms the women were not vulnerable or exploited or trafficked or sexually assaulted." The lawyers said that Combs, "at most, paid to engage in voyeurism as part of a 'swingers' lifestyle" and argued that "does not constitute 'prostitution' under a properly limited definition of the statutory term". Combs was acquitted of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking, charges could have put one of hip-hop's celebrated figures in prison for life. The morning's headlines in 90 seconds, including fleeing driver hits house, severe turbulence hits US flight, and massive new bug found in Australia. (Source: 1News) The new motion asks Judge Arun Subramanian to vacate the jury's verdict, or to order a new trial whose evidence is limited to matters related to the Mann Act counts, because of "severe spillover prejudice from reams of inflammatory evidence" related to the more serious counts. ADVERTISEMENT Prosecutors insisted during the eight-week trial that Combs had coerced, threatened and sometimes viciously forced two ex-girlfriends to have sex with male sex workers to satisfy his sexual urges. They cited multiple acts of violence he carried out against them as proof that they had no say. A day earlier, Combs' team asked the judge to free him on a US$50 million (NZ$84.7 million) bond while he awaits sentencing in October after a jury found him not guilty of the most serious federal charges he faced earlier this month. His lawyer argued that conditions at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn are dangerous, noting that others convicted of similar prostitution-related offenses were typically released before sentencing. Subramanian previously denied a request that Combs be released on bail while he awaits sentencing, citing a now-infamous video of Combs beating a former girlfriend and photographs showing injuries to another ex-girlfriend. The judge has not yet ruled on either of this week's motions.

Officer injured after stolen vehicle rams police in Auckland's Manurewa
Police are hunting for the driver of a stolen vehicle that struck and injured a police officer before fleeing in Auckland last night. The stolen vehicle was spotted parked near Southmall in Manurewa at around 11.30pm on Tuesday. Detective Inspector Karen Bright said two police units arrived on scene and signalled for the vehicle to remain stopped. "As police approached the vehicle on foot , the vehicle fled, hitting a police constable and collided with a patrol vehicle." St John said one ambulance responded to the incident. ADVERTISEMENT "One person was assessed at the scene and transported to Middlemore Hospital in a moderate condition." Bright said the officer had been discharged from hospital. "The vehicle was later located abandoned in Manurewa. This vehicle will undergo an examination and enquiries are underway to locate the driver," she said. "Investigators will now be working to locate this individual, and we suggest doing the right thing and handing yourself in at the nearest police station." Anyone with relevant information should contact police on 105. Police being rammed every second day A police car which was "repeatedly rammed" in Auckland's Mount Wellington earlier this month. (Source: NZ Police) ADVERTISEMENT An internal police document released to 1News earlier this year revealed the number of intentional rammings of police staff and vehicles amounted to one every second day across the country. Deputy Police Commissioner Tania Kura said offenders were more brazen than ever when fleeing police. "People who've got stolen vehicles or evidence in their vehicle that they don't want to be caught. Sometimes people actually just want to hurt us because we are police." Police Association president Chris Cahill said: "An officer a month is hospitalised because of an injury in a ramming — that's not minor injuries — this is hospitalised." Nelson officer Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming was hit and killed by a vehicle on New Year's Day. A trial date for the accused has been set for May 2026.

Police Minister says record high gang numbers 'highly concerning'
For the first time, the number of patched gang members and gang prospects has surpassed 10,000 — with Police Minister Mark Mitchell acknowledging the figure is highly concerning. The number of gang members has been steadily growing in recent years. There were 9270 gang members on the National Gang List at the time of the 2023 election. As of July 10, there were 10,009 — an increase of more than 700 gang members and associates. The National Gang List counted patched members and prospects identified by state agencies. Police officer numbers are failing to keep up with the national gang member list, Benedict Collins reports. (Source: 1News) Mitchell told 1News today that the Government's tough on crime policies were working and gang numbers were now growing more slowly. ADVERTISEMENT "We're going after the gangs, we're making their life as difficult as possible," he said. He repeatedly blamed the rising gang numbers on the previous Labour-led government and their policies. "We're not going to reverse what happened under Labour [for] six years, where you saw a massive increase in gang numbers. "We're heading in the right direction." In an answer to a Parliamentary written question, however, Mitchell acknowledged the issue was alarming. "I acknowledge that it is highly concerning to see gang membership grow to this level." ADVERTISEMENT Labour's police spokesperson Ginny Andersen said the Prime Minister and his Government were failing to make New Zealanders safer. "Not only have gang numbers increased but methamphetamine levels have skyrocketed under their watch," she said. However, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon today maintained his Government was "smashing the gangs". "I'm proud of the progress that we've made, I mean putting the gang patches [ban] in place — many people said that couldn't be done." Criminologist Jarrod Gilbert said the gang patch ban may actually be leading to an undercount of gang members now. "We can't identify the gangs anymore because insignia has been banned so, perversely ,we might see numbers come down on this list, it's not reflective of anything that's happening on the street it's just that the gangs are more invisible." When in opposition, the National Party repeatedly attacked the previous Labour government over rising gang numbers. Data from the Police Minister's office shows that when Labour came to power in 2017 there were 5343 individuals on the National Gang List. By the 2023 election, there were 9270 — an increase of nearly 4000 over six years.
