A fierce online debate erupted over a deeply rooted inequality in the professional education system; Why are medical graduates bound by long-term service bonds for government jobs, while engineering graduates from prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) walk free, often into lucrative private sector roles or foreign companies?
The conversation reignited after a resurfaced statement by ISRO's former Chairman, Dr S Somnath, who lamented the lack of interest shown by IIT students in working with the space research agency. Somnath, who steered the historic Chandrayaan-3 mission, had earlier revealed that over 60% of IIT students walked out midway during ISRO's campus recruitment presentation, simply after seeing the salary figures.
This triggered a strong response from the medical community, particularly from doctors who face mandatory government service bonds lasting up to 10 years after completing degrees like MBBS, MD, or super-specialisations.
Dr Deepak Krishnamurthy, Senior Cardiologist at Bengaluru's KIMS Hospital, questioned the double standards. 'I wonder why only doctors should have bonds to work for govt. Enforce them on IITians also to work for ISRO, DRDO etc," he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Joining him, Prof Dr G Rajesh of Government Medical College, Kozhikode, said, Let them go to US no issues. But we doctors have bond, upto 10 years in certain states after doing MBBS or MD or superspeciality. Why these guys are exempted? You spend much more money for them!!" He also marked the Prime Minister's Office in his post.

The Indian Institutes of Technology are publicly funded and offer some of the most heavily subsidised education in the country. Despite this, a significant percentage of IIT graduates opt for careers abroad or in private corporations, often ignoring roles in government-funded research bodies such as ISRO or DRDO, where salaries and perks are far less competitive.
The resentment stems from the stark contrast; while MBBS graduates in government colleges may pay as little as Rs 56,000 per year for their studies and are then required to serve in rural or government hospitals, IITians with similar or even greater subsidies face no such obligation.
Dr Somnath's concerns aren't isolated. The country's elite scientific and defence institutions are increasingly finding it difficult to attract top-tier technical talent. Despite ISRO's groundbreaking space missions and DRDO's critical role in defence innovation, these bodies are perceived as offering poor financial incentives and outdated work environments.
The debate has now grown into a wider call for policy reform. Should IIT graduates, who benefit from elite education at nominal cost, be required to serve in government institutions for a few years before heading abroad?

Tripura adopted zero-tolerance policy against drug menace on PM Modi, HM Shah's advice: CM Saha
Agartala: On the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, the Tripura government has taken a zero-tolerance policy against the drug menace and its illegal trade, Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Sunday. Inaugurating and laying foundation stones of various projects worth Rs 42.46 crore in Dhalai district, the Chief Minister said that Tripura is being used as a corridor for the illegal drugs trade and the law enforcement agencies are always remain extra alert to curb the illicit activities. 'Of late we have witnessed a section of girls become involved in the drug menaces and its abuse. Abusing of drugs through Intravenous Injection has been rising in Tripura causing spread of HIV/AIDS,' said Saha, who also holds Health and Family Welfare and Education portfolios. He said that the Union Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Ministry has already sanctioned Rs 198 crore for setting up a special drug de-addiction centre at Bishramganj in the state's Sepahijala district. The Chief Minister said that the state government has already decided to set up drug de-addiction centres in all the eight districts of the state, with Rs 20 crore would be spent for each of the centres. During the financial year 2024-2025, the seizure of drugs increased by 103 per cent and destruction of seized drugs increased by 132 per cent, he added. Claiming that Tripura would become a militancy-free state, the Chief Minister said that after a tripartite agreement in Delhi in presence of Union Home Minister, several hundred militants from the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) surrendered to the state government in September last year. He also announced that all the promises made to the NLFT and ATTF cadres would be fulfilled by the government. He said that after the BJP government came to power in Tripura in 2018, all social parameters of the state improved. "Tripura is in the second position in the northeast region in GDP after Assam. The state is in the second position in the region in per capita income after Sikkim. The huge untapped natural resources and vast environmental beauty of Tripura are a treasure, and the state government has been trying to effectively put them to use for the state,' the Chief Minister said. He said that the empowerment of women and all-round development of the tribals are the priority of the government, while development in the education and health sectors are also thrust areas of the government. CM Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, claimed that Tripura is the third-best state in the country in maintaining law and order situation. "Compared to 2023, during 2024, crime rate declined by 19.4 per cent. To curb the cyber crimes in Tripura, a state-level Cyber Crime Police Station was inaugurated on Saturday at Arundhutinagar Nagar on the outskirts of Agartala,' the Chief Minister said.

Chennai, June 29 (UNI) The four member Ax-4 crew were fully immersed in their mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), Axiom Space said today. On the fourth day updates, it said Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) Commander Peggy Whitson, Indian Pilot Shubhanshu Shukla 'Shux,' Mission Specialist Sławosz 'Suave' Uznański-Wiśniewski, and Mission Specialist Tibor Kapu are now fully immersed in their mission aboard the ISS wrapping up their day on orbit with a schedule full of scientific research and international outreach." The Ax-4 crew has transitioned smoothly from arrival protocols to hands-on research. With microgravity acclimation behind them, the crew is now diving into a diverse portfolio of experiments that could shape the future of medicine, agriculture, and space exploration, it said. Peggy led the charge on the 4th day yesterday with work on the Cancer in LEO-3 investigation. Building on previous Axiom Space missions, this study focuses on how cancer cells behave in microgravity. Specifically, it examines tumor organoids and how a new model of triple-negative breast cancer responds to drug treatments in space. "The goal? To validate earlier findings and potentially unlock new therapeutic strategies that could benefit patients on Earth and astronauts on long-duration missions", Axiom Space said. Understanding how radiation affects the human body in space is critical for planning future missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. The data collected could also enhance Earth-based radiation monitoring technologies, benefiting industries from healthcare to environmental science. Tibor began setting up the Vitapric investigation. This plant biology experiment explores how plant growth primers affect the development of microgreens in space. The goal is to enhance the nutritional value of space-grown crops—boosting vitamins, proteins, and minerals--to support sustainable food production for future long-duration missions. In addition, the crew initiated the Cerebral Hemodynamics study, completing the first session after installing the necessary software. Using ultrasound technology, this research explores how blood circulates in the brain under microgravity conditions. The findings could improve our understanding of cardiovascular adaptation in space and inform medical diagnostics and treatments for conditions like stroke and hypertension on Earth. Shux also took part in a historic outreach event by speaking with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The conversation highlighted the growing global collaboration in space exploration and inspired audiences back on Earth. Most were discharged after receiving first devotee in a critical condition was transferred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for further care. At least 12 other patients are still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).Officials are keeping a close watch on the situation. The administration has asked devotees to stay cautious and cooperate with the authorities during the ongoing Rath Yatra.
