‘Sorry I Can't Come to Work:' Woman's Boyfriend Parks Her Car. Then She Realizes That He Cranked the Parking Brake Way Too Hard
Sometimes we do things for our partners with the purest of intentions, and it ends up doing more harm than good. That's what happened to this woman who was stuck in her car because of a simple thing her boyfriend did. Why Would He Do This? In the viral TikTok, which has more than 10.2 million views, content creator Milly (@millyclare1xo) shared what happened after her boyfriend drove her car. Milly is in her car, seemingly about to go to work, when she notices she can't move her vehicle. Her boyfriend put the hand brake up, and it's stuck in position. 'Sorry I can't come to work my boyfriend put my hand brake up,' Milly said in the on-screen caption. Throughout the video, you can see that she's using all of her physical power to put the brake back in position, but it's futile. 'Literally, oh my God,' Milly says as she pouts at the camera, on the verge of giving up. While Milly never posted a follow-up video updating viewers on her situation, we think it's safe to say that she eventually figured it out or got some help. Why Did She Turn Off the Comments? In a follow-up video , Milly shared that the comment section was so full of mansplainers (if you don't know what that is, ask a dude to tell you) who assumed she knew nothing about cars. 'I obviously know how to use a handbrake, I've been driving 3 years, I just couldn't lift it at that height, what aren't people understanding?' Milly said in the on-screen caption. 'State of these comments... and [they] wonder why there's a male loneliness epidemic,' one viewer responded to the original video. What Is a Handbrake? The handbrake—also known as the parking brake, emergency brake, or e-brake—is a secondary braking system used primarily to keep your vehicle stationary when parked, Driving Tests explained. While traditionally operated by a mechanical lever between the front seats, newer cars often feature electronic versions controlled by a button or switch. Some models also use a pedal to engage the handbrake, typically located on the far left of the driver's footwell. Mechanical handbrakes are gradually being phased out in favor of electronic ones, which offer more cabin space and fewer sharp edges. Regardless of type, the handbrake acts on the rear wheels of the vehicle and operates independently from the main hydraulic foot brake. When to use your handbrake Despite the name, the handbrake isn't just for emergencies. You're meant to use it regularly, especially when parked. According to The Driving Test , here's when it matters most: When parking: For both automatic and manual cars, the handbrake helps secure your vehicle in place, especially on hills. In automatics, you're supposed to apply the handbrake before shifting into Park, which keeps the car's weight off the transmission. In manuals, pair it with gear selection: reverse for downhill, first for uphill, neutral on flat ground. On a hill in traffic: In stop-start traffic while driving a manual, the handbrake keeps your car from rolling backward and frees up your feet to use the clutch and gas without panicking. While waiting at an intersection: A courtesy move. If someone rear-ends you while your foot's on the brake, the car may lurch forward. With the handbrake on, you reduce the chance of hitting the car in front. Bonus: your brake lights won't be blinding the driver behind you at night. In an emergency: If your main brakes fail (a rare but real possibility), the handbrake can act as backup. Just don't expect miracles; handbrakes only apply force to the rear wheels and are significantly weaker than foot brakes. Trump attacks ‘woke' Jaguar as carmaker names first Indian chief
Jaguar Land Rover has appointed its first Indian chief executive as Donald Trump accused the company of being in 'absolute turmoil' following a 'woke' marketing campaign. PB Balaji, chief financial officer at the the carmaker's Indian owners, Tata Motors, is to take up the post in November as Jaguar deals with the fallout of a rebrand in which it ditched its big cat logo and embraced a new hot pink aesthetic. On Monday, the US president contrasted the fortunes of Britain's Jaguar with American Eagle, a US clothing brand that recently saw its share price surge after debuting an advertising campaign with actress Sydney Sweeney. Mr Trump wrote on Truth Social: 'Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the 'HOTTEST' ad out there. It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are 'flying off the shelves.' Go get 'em Sydney! 'On the other side of the ledger, Jaguar did a stupid, and seriously WOKE advertisement, THAT IS A TOTAL DISASTER! The CEO just resigned in disgrace, and the company is in absolute turmoil. Who wants to buy a Jaguar after looking at that disgraceful ad.' It comes days after Adrian Mardell, the 64-year-old boss of Jaguar Land Rover, announced his intention to retire. Under Mr Mardell, the car company sought to shake off its traditional image as a brand for 'Jag Men' and instead target a younger demographic. As part of plans to relaunch the brand, Jaguar last year debuted an advertising campaign depicting a bright pink, Mars-like landscape and catwalk models wearing unusual, brightly coloured clothing – but no car. The clip was widely mocked online. Jaguar has also ditched its jumping cat logo and last December debuted a 'Barbie pink' concept car at Miami Art Week. Credit: Jaguar Critics have accused Jaguar of abandoning its core customers. Nigel Farage, the Reform UK leader, accusing Jaguar of going 'absolutely bonkers … showing a bunch of weirdos'. He predicted that the carmaker would 'now go bust. And you know what? They deserve to'. The appointment of Mr Balaji marks the first time Tata Motors has appointed a Jaguar Land Rover leader from within its own ranks since buying the two distinguished British brands from Ford at the height of the financial crisis. Mr Balaji, a mechanical engineering graduate, has worked at Tata Motors for almost eight years and has overseen a turnaround at JLR's parent company. The company has long been a dominant player in the Indian car market but was loss-making when he arrived. Tata Motor's share price has soared around 270pc since he arrived. At Jaguar, Mr Balaji must oversee a make-or-break relaunch of the brand. New Jaguars are currently unavailable in the UK as the carmaker prepares to launch an all-electric range next year. On Monday, Mr Trump said that Jaguar should have 'learned a lesson from Bud Lite, which went Woke and essentially destroyed, in a short campaign, the Company.' Two years ago, Bud Lite enraged Right-wingers in America and saw its sales plummet after it used transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney in its marketing. Mr Trump said on Truth Social: 'The tide has seriously turned – Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be.' His comments also came after it emerged that Ms Sweeney was a registered Republican. Records uncovered over the weekend show she registered with the party in June last year. Shares in American Eagle jumped 17pc after the president's endorsement. Jaguar Land Rover's sales dipped to £25.2bn for the year to March 31, down from £25.7bn a year earlier. The company said this was driven by 'the prioritisation of higher margin vehicles'. More recently, the company's business has been hugely disrupted by US tariffs. JLR's sales to the US were temporarily paused in April after Mr Trump announced a 25pc tariff on car imports. The British carmaker sells around 100,000 vehicles each year in the US and the trade war put some £6.5bn in sales at risk. The US-UK trade deal secured a 10pc tariff for the first 100,000 British vehicles exported, seen as predominantly benefitting JLR. Aston Martin has pushed for rules to stop the system becoming 'a JLR tariff agreement'. Last week, the company said: 'Adrian Mardell has expressed his desire to retire from JLR after three years as CEO and 35 years with the company.' Jaguar Land Rover has been approached for comment. Registrations of new cars down by 5% in July as drivers delay EV purchases
Registrations of new cars down by 5% in July as drivers delay EV purchases Registrations of new cars stalled in July as many drivers delayed purchases of electric vehicles (EVs) until Government grants are rolled out. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said 140,154 new cars were registered last month, down 5% from 147,517 during July 2024. Battery electric vehicles (Bevs) held a 21.3% share of the new car market last month. At least 28% of new cars sold by each manufacturer in the UK this year are required to be zero emission – which generally means pure electric – under the Government's zero emission vehicle mandate. The first electric car models eligible for new Government grants were announced on Tuesday. Drivers will be able to save £1,500 with the purchase of new Citroen e-C3, e-C4, e-C5 and e-Berlingo cars. These are the first models approved under the new £650 million electric car grant. The scheme will enable motorists purchasing a new electric car to save either £1,500 or £3,750, depending on the vehicle's sustainability. SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: 'July's dip shows yet again the new car market's sensitivity to external factors, and the pressing need for consumer certainty. 'Confirming which models qualify for the new EV grant, alongside compelling manufacturer discounts on a huge choice of exciting new vehicles, should send a strong signal to buyers that now is the time to switch. 'That would mean increased demand for the rest of this year and into next, which is good news for the industry, car buyers and our environmental ambitions.' The SMMT slightly upgraded its forecast for full-year new car registrations, to 1.9 million. Registrations in 2024 reached 1.95 million. Bevs are forecast to hold a full-year market share of 23.8%. Ian Plummer, commercial director at online vehicle marketplace Auto Trader, said the grant has provided a 'much-needed boost' for consumer interest in new electric cars, with EV consideration up 10 percentage points on Auto Trader. But the unveiling of the initiative on July 14 explains why it was a 'slow' month for sales as buyers 'wait to see just which models will get what level of grant'. He added that discounts – either through the grant or by brands cutting prices themselves – will 'trickle through to EV sales in the coming months'.
